BattleBots! It's back. (1 Viewer)

This is a serious flaw with Chomp getting the split decision. Opening of the show got a laugh.
Split decision?  Chomp was awful in that fight.  I left the room when it ended and never heard the decision.  I assumed it was obvious.  The ability to auto-right itself is cool, but it is was too slow.  Everybody saw the strategy template to beat Chomp in this match.  Going to be a rough road ahead for Chomp.   You can win a piece of Chomp here.

I hope the show doesn't go too off the rails with marketing like this. The three main elements are the Robots, Faroq,
and the goofy announcers. Do not mess up a good formula.

(not a robot guy) How do they determine what frequency each person uses?   I know when I was a kid, myself and brother got matching RC cars that had a switch on the remote and the car that I think had 3 different frequencies.  Seemed like in that Lock Jaw vs Bronco match they both had issues driving, could they have accidently been on the same frequency.   And a couple episodes ago the Bite Force guy looked like he had to run around to the side of the cage to get his remote to synch back up with his robot.

I miss this every week. What channel what time? Thanks! Just dumped the awful PS Vue for Hulu. Maybe I can find it easier.

No idea, I don't think they were on the same frequency, they just weren't getting a good connection.
I think it is a variety of issues-angle of the transmitter with the antenna of the Bot and the steel floor.
Plus the cage could be part of the interference issues.

The control systems used take advantage of Digital Spread Spectrum technology (DSS) which is pretty much immune to interference. Essentially, the power is distributed across a range of frequencies.  Control systems rapidly, and randomly, change frequencies, basically similar to the technology used in military communication systems.  Even if someone was trying to intentionally jam the signal, they would have a difficult time doing so.  The signal would change faster than they could possibly zero in on.  The critical piece to make these systems work is for the transmitter and receiver to be in sync for effective communication.

If you can't get enough of this the British version is Robot Wars. A lower budget
version but with more personality from the builders.

2019 debuts Friday on Discovery. From the marketing email:

Starting June 7th the ALL NEW season of BattleBots will kick off on Discovery! Tune in at 8pm* to enjoy the metal-crunching, battery-burning, wheel-popping 2-hour premiere! This season will contain sixteen two-hour episodes, each featuring more battles and new behind-the-scenes footage where we learn how the robots work and what it takes to compete and win the 2019 BattleBots World Championship!

if i was going to make a bot i would probably make one that would lose so i would make one that was at least fun to watch lose and which rewarded everyone for playin along so mine would be filled with delicious spicy burritos and when it got whacked and lost it would start spinning and spray burritos out in to the audience and everyone would want to catch them and if anyone booed i would shout are you not entertained all while a zippy mariachi band played the hat dance take that to the bank bromigos

Just got home and turned it on...let's fight!!!  They say they are going to explore more background story and insight into the build process this season.  That's interesting stuff, but I prefer just to see the fight matches.

A crew from my work built one for this season. It's the giant vertical spinning one.
Deep Six or Huge?  I'll assume it is Deep Six since that one is new for this season.  I caught just a little bit of the part of the show where they were previewing Deep Six...looked like were having some trouble keeping it upright.

Just looked it up. Called "Mammoth". I don't think it played yet.

From the look, I bet it gets rocked pretty badly.  Way too big and I bet the chain and wheels are fragile.

Why would they put fire on the end of the spinning thingy?  If you plan to use fire, wouldn't you want that fairly stationary so you could roast a single location for a significant amount of time to do damage?  Also, the spinner does not look massive enough to deliver much damage on its own.

Has there been a robot yet that has used fire as an effective weapon? Just wasted weight on the bot that could have been used elsewhere better IMO.

Guy in our neighborhood was in last year, but I'm not sure if he's in this year.  I don't know him but my wife saw him post on FB about it.  It was a flipper that didn't do that great last year.  Can't remember which one.  I think it looked like the Sub Zero one, or whatever, but I don't think it was that one.

On a side note, I checked the rules and here's what everyone should be doing:

The spinners are the most dangerous.  I would take fishing wire and or string and gently attach it to my armor.  When a spinner hit it, it would tear the string off and wrap around the spinner.  It's the best defense.  And it's simple and lightweight.  It would totally change the game.

The "bad boy of battle bots" judge did this a few years ago.  He put a gift wraped box at the front of his bot, when the spinner hit it there was a net inside.  They stopped the fight, untangled the spinner and re started it.  At the time they said any tangling devices were against the rules.

Interesting.  I didn't see anything in the rules about that.

and again there is not burrito launching bot so once again its a major letdown take that to the bank bromigos

Tombstone vs the field, who ya got?
1. Minotaur: had an unlucky break against Tombstone last year.  Not a big fan, but it is straight up mean.

2. Witch Doctor: not a fan of this one, either, but they know how to win.

3. Son of Wyachi: also don't like this one but it has a pedigree and seems just unorthodox enough to avoid a lot of damage.

4. Mammoth: intriguing design, may be too unorthodox to take down.

5. BattleSaw: haven't seen this one in action but it looks interesting.

Also hoping Duck makes some waves.

1- agree if they can undo the modification that they seemingly made this year that makes them less awesome.

2- disagree. Don't ever have high hopes for this bot.

3- with the right matchups can do well

4- pretty sure will be exposed and weakness revealed soon enough

5-- unsure

6- Duck is a real wildcard. Literally throws themselves at other bots and breaks them before being destroyed. If only they could add just a tiny bit of offense to their mix, could be great

Not a fan of all of the puff pieces this season.  One fight.  Then three commercial breaks in between the next fight filled with backstory on how the robots were made.  No one cares.  We came here to see robots fight.  Not people talk.

I watched the last episode "on demand".  It was awesome.  Fast forward until I see Faruq then hit play.

My OCD won't let me fast forward through the fluff.  I feel like I'm going to miss something important.

Also, side note:  I think it was Ep. 1, they showed a bot that was testing it's spinner and it was like the most powerful spinner ever.  They said they couldn't even test it at full speed at their house.  When they tested it in the box, it flew out of control at 75%.  I thought they were showing it because it was fighting that episode, but no.  And now we're like 4 or 5 episodes in and it's never been mentioned again.  Even if that bot sucks, how could they not at least show it once.  I imagine the fail would at least be spectacular.  And why show it in ep.1 if we don't ever talk about it again?

3 of your first 4 lost on Friday and didn’t look good at all. Mammoth in particular looked awful to a brand new robot. The 4th was Witch Doctor who I’m not a fan of as they promote them as way better than they are. They break down all the time.

Not sure what’s wrong with Minotaur but it doesn’t seem like they can just go back to the old drum. They may have made too many changes and now they are stuck with a robot that might not make it to the final 16.

I think that was Deep Six. I looked it up because I remember that snippet and we haven’t seen it yet.

I wonder if we are going to get a "new bot" episode soon...or some kind of online thing to view the fights that aren't being featured on TV. There's a bunch of bots who haven't been on yet, and many of in their first or second year:

Battlesaw
Bronco
Daisy Cutter
Deep Six
Double Jeopardy (the giant gun bot)
Electric Ray
Extinguisher
the Four Horseman
Foxtrot
Kingpin
Nightmare
P1
Sharkorpian
Shellshock
Sidewinder
Tantrum

I wonder if they just suck. I think they have bypassed a lot of useless battles in the past of bots that just fail or battles that are uneventful at best to keep things entertaining.

Tombstone vs the field, who ya got?
Gotta take the field. Bots I like:

-Bite Force. Winner of two of the past three Giant Nuts, Bite Force is just a damn solid bot.

-Bronco. No explanation necessary.

-Duck. Hal Rucker built the robot version of Rocky Balboa. It's not how hard you can hit, it's how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. Nearly beat Tombstone last year.

-Sawblaze. Jamison Go is the best driver. Better than Daniel Freitas, the Minotaur dude. His bot isn't the toughest, but he could drive to victory. He was completely on to Tombstones spin-to-hit-the-tire trick.

-Hydra. Purely based on the genius of my Wisconsin brethren, the Ewerts. These guys know how to design and build winning robots.

Dark horse:  Whiplash - had an amazing run last season, only losing to Tombstone and Bite Force, beating Bronco. Also handily beat Minotaur this season. At 50-1 it's a bet I can't lay off.

Bronco debuts tonight (as an underdog vs Bite Force in the main event).

I believe everyone else is a repeat, so none of the newer bots I mentioned previously are getting TV time.
