bears safeties (1 Viewer)

anybody hear anything in regards to who will be the starting safeties for the bears? more specifically i am wondering if afalava keeps the strong safety position. payne started at free safety but was not overly impressive and was a main culprit (along with stumbling vasher) on the game winner. manning played well and i don't know if they are just easing him back into the free safety spot or plan to just keep him as nickel and kick returner.

with urlacher out i see the safeties getting alot more tackles and am wondering if manning comes back what happens at the strong spot etc etc. lovie seems to really like afalava.

anybody hear of anything?

sorry posted this before i scrolled down and saw a thread on this subject. i still would appreciate any further news that might have popped up. i like afalava but not to split snaps with payne if manning returns to free safety.

Manning in at FS, Afalava stays at SS - Payne to the bench

With Urlacher out, I am hoping both Manning and Afalava have value - but this sounds like a pretty fluid situation. I picked up both via waivers this week and will probably start Afalava as a DB3. Not sold yet on Manning and we do not get return yards.

the Bears do weird things with their safeties sometimes. D.Manning is probably worth a pickup in most leagues now as it looks like he'll be playing FS in the base defense and then lining up in the slot when they go to a nickel. Without Urlacher in the middle, he might put up some decent tackle numbers most weeks.

I'm still surprised that they think Afalava is a better option than Payne at SS right now.

Manning over Afalava?I assumed with Urlacher out, the SS would get more tackle opportunites. I realize that Afalava does not have a firm grip on the position, but if he is starting he seems like a decent DB2/3.Against Pittsburgh I think they both could be good plays given that Pitt cannot run the ball very well right now, and the propensity for Roethlisberger to take sacks. (Though I guess it is tough for a DB to sack Big Ben by themselves)

If Manning is back to starting at FS (and playing nickelback), I like him pretty well vs. Pitt when ret yds are factored in. The loss of Urlacher should provide more opportunity for both safeties to make some plays (I would think strong safety even more though).

Just traded Payne/Geno Hayes for Session/WW pick this morning(which turned out to be Afalava) :-)
