Bears Sign Adrian Peterson to contract extension (1 Viewer)

Why wouldn't they be interested in signing him to an extension? He has proven to be a decent backup RB. This could mean nothing. It would be interesting to know what they were willing to pay him.

Does this hasten Jones departure? Peterson runs well enough, it seems, that if it's only Benson and Peterson and Benson fails/gets injured that they could plug in Peterson and not lose a beat. In my eyes Peterson could be the top backup RB on just about any NFL team.

This could be the groundwork for TJ to be traded AFTER this season. He'll have one more year under contract and I can see no way that he resigns with Chicago. SO if Benson proves worthy this year, they will have their starter and quality backup and can trade TJ prior to the draft for picks.

Of course, it could mean nothing. Just signing a quality backup for good money.

Think the former sounds like a shark move to me.Now, onto a more perplexing question:

Where does TJ play in 2007? Does he start?

He'd look great in a Miami uni splitting time with Ronnie Brown.

He'd also look great in a Jets jersey..... CMart #2?

They also have Hollings on the roster who could be a decent number 3 should they trade Jones.

As a Bears fan I really do not want to see them trade Jones, but a Jones for Lelie trade would make some sense for both teams. The Bears have a lot of young WRs on their roster that they like, but many people expected them to draft a WR and they chose no to.

 Any link to support this or just a random thought? Might DEN have hard interests?? Jones would be a freaking gold mine in Denver this year.

If we are just speculating, I could see the following as potential targets:NYJ - if Curtis cannot rebound, NY may look for a runner who can catch and run ala LT - although TJ is no LT

IND - if Addai does not pan out

Jax - if Drew does not pan out

Bal - if Lewis falters

SF - if neither Gore or Barlow distinguish themselves

GB - doubtful that CHI would ever trade to GB, but the need and system would be favorable for TJ.

Of course, many of these teams may be in a position to fill the need through the draft. For example, SF may draft early and A. PEterson may be preferable in the new SF system.

GB really came to mind, but no chance to land there from CHI.

I really think he'd be solid in NY for the Jets.

I see CMart with another very solid year this season, but I really think this will be his last, and I think he knows it too.

1) NYJ

2) DEN

3) MIA

4) IND

5) NWE

While I know many posters on this board have little love for TJ, this would be a steal for the Broncos. A solid RB (at least over the past two years) with two years on his contract for little money (relatively speaking) for a WR who has underperformed, has 1 year left on his contract and wants to be paid as a #1.I just can't see this deal going through as a player for player. Of course this may all be speculation.

I would think any potential trade of TJ would require him reworking his deal. No one will trade for TJ for a one year rental. With that in mind, I doubt NWE since they just drafted Maroney (although if he busts I can see it), and while Miami seems a natural, I think they would want more of a 2 RB - and TJ thinks of himself as a #1.I missed Denver, he could definitely fit in well there.

I also think NYJ because Schottenheimer is used to LT, and while TJ is no LT he can run and catch - more along the lines of LT then someone like Martin and Houston.

And, GB would be a great fit, but Da BEars aren't trading him to the hated Packers and see him twice a year.

Nothing to confirm, probably highly unlikely seeing as how Denver has proven that they do not like to trade for running backs. I also have not really seen the Bears say that they are going to trade Jones. The speculation comes from him missing OTAs. More or less I'm just bringing up these trade partners, because it could fit both teams needs and both would be trading unhappy players.More than likely Jones is a Bear for this season, and than something happens after this year. Unfortunately for the Bears there is not a strong trade market for running backs in this day and age.

A couple of different angles on this.

By signing AP before dealing TJ Bears could be saving themselves some $$. Number 3 rbs work cheaper than #2s. If I was AP I would want more cash knowing I was now the #2, a known commodity that knows the system, etc. And Benson hasn't exactly set the world on fire yet.

Also, I think most teams have had their OTAs, mini-camps, etc. by now and maybe a team or two has seen things they don't like about their rb situation making them feel like need to make a move before training camp or the season starts.

Just curious, why would you think Ronnie Brown would need have someone split with him next year? Lets say he goes for 1400 and 10 tds, I can't see any way possible he isn't the #1 guy in 2007, in a non-RBBC system..maybe T. Jones as the backup, is that what you meant?

Jones to Miami? STL? Denver?
don't forget Houston, Morency is out with plantar fascitis(sp), DD is banged up with chronic knee problems.
Interesting...But Jones wants to be somewhere where he's the #1 and PAID like a #1. Jones has 3-4 years of solid production left in him, maybe more. He doesn't want to find himself in a similar situation elsewhere.

To speculate trade this year, DEN, NYJ, HOU, SF.

There are too many "ifs" though.

It does stir the pot like a cuisinart, doesn't it?

:stirspot:

I would also add Indy into the possible trade mix too. They may not feel comfortable starting the season with the current mix of RBs they have.

When I saw that the Bears had extended Peterson I was thinking the exact same thing, Lelie for TJ.

I'd be surprised (shocked is a better word) if TJ was dealt. His value to other teams is playing under his current contract, something he doesn't want to do.

Peterson got a $1 million signing bonus is making the minimum throughout, perhaps I'm missing the boat as to what this has to do with TJ. Peterson's a great #3 (more than capable of spot starting) and special teamer.

I would agree, at the time I posted the numbers were not out. It is a great contract for the Bears as he is also a very talented special teams player. I was thinking that it might be a slap in the face, extending Peterson's contract and not discussing with TJ, but at those numbers the only one that could complain is Peterson in the future. The one thing Angelo has done very well the last few years is locking up players before their contract ends to very cap friendly contracts. With this contract I would say Hollings is less likely to be on the roster than Jones.

TJ is unhappy. Unhappy players can be lockerroom cancers. Players rarely perform 'better' when unhappy. Both TJ and Lelie have missed OTAs and mini camps, both are displeased, but for different reasons. Lelie is unhappy because of Javon Walker and the slight of his ability as a #1 WR. TJ is sore because Ced makes more money. The benefit of TJ to Denver is not just his fit in the Bronco system and the Bronco need of a legit #1 RB but also in ridding themselves of an unhappy camper in Lelie. Da Bears are loaded at RB. They invested a ton in Ced and just signed AP to an extension. They could use a WR and they are not about to tear up TJ's contract and sign him to a long term extension especially with Ced ready to take over.Teams don't tend to sign their #RBs to extensions especially during public holdouts by their #1RB from the previous year is making the front pages and they spent a #1 pick on a RB who is ready to take over if they only project the #3RB to stay in the #3 role. The extention is a shot across the bow to TJ and considering all of the other factors its not unreasonable to match up both team's needs with two problems that could be great solutions to each team's needs but that is my humble opinion. :)

Wow, great signing by Angelo. I really don't understand why Peterson would sign this deal, but that works...
