Bears suspended TE Martellus Bennett for conduct detrimental to team (1 Viewer)

wowziers!!!

Bears suspended TE Martellus Bennett for conduct detrimental to the team.
Bennett's suspension is for an "undetermined" amount of time. He was also fined. The veteran tight end went after first-round rookie CB Kyle Fuller in a dust-up at Monday's practice and was booted from the field. He isn't at practice Tuesday. We wouldn't expect the suspension to last very long, and it should have zero affect on his status for Week 1. Marty B remains a low-end TE1.

Fuller's reaction didn't look very good. He looked very scared. Also, it's rest of the team (on both sides of the ball) looked pretty casual about, until Bennett didn't let go. I think it looked like a pretty dirty facemask by Fuller though too.

He stood his ground just fine against a 6'6" 270 lb monster until the monster slammed him to the ground. Then he got up. Where's the scared? Did you have access to facial expressions the rest of us didn't?

Gotta be more to it than that video. That's pretty run of the mill.
Not run of the mill as it was after the play but also not a big deal. He must have been warned already.
Most tc fights start after the play is dead. Either way, there's got to be something else going on with Martellus. I wonder if he is unmotivated, or motivated to seek something more than his current situation provides for.

It was basically a glorified walk through and Fuller only tried to rip the ball out.

I've heard that the N word was potentially dropped during the altercation and that's something Trestman doesn't want in the building at all.

It appeared that Fuller reached his hands up in the air gingerly and slightly walked his feet backwards Would you agree that his fight/flight mechanism kicked in?

IF ya cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen..

Im pretty sure hell toughen up, especially if he is going around garbbin face mask

On the radio, Trestman has been upset w the actions which could result in a penalty I believe someone mentioned going after the whistle So basically multiple infractions Now DaBears know Coach aint blowin smoke eh

Most tc fights start during the play and both players refuse to quit first when the whistle is blown. That is not the case here, Bennett is just being a d*ck.

Meh

This is the tip of the iceberg with Bennett. The guys different, and his interest in playing football much less getting on board with the coaching staff is coming into question.

He's also a really intelligent dude, so he's likely not acting arbitrarily.

You're clearly trying to hate on Fuller here, he grabbed the football...exactly what he should be doing.

Pretty harmless stuff to get suspended for....

We are known as the Monsters of the Midway...

Well... the guy has always raised question marks personalty wise in relation to football. He may be the greatest guy in the world, but if football isn't his overriding priority, he might not work out for you. He is really smart, and has a lot of interests in a lot of other things (businesses, hobbies, etc). If he just isn't that in to playing football anymore, it could be a rough road.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if he wants out. Tough hand to play though.

I didn't see the facemask No although it did appear Bennett was swung around rather quick (facemask would be good reason for attack mode to kick in imo)

I was responding to the fear It could mean rut roh Im getting called out for messing up? It could mean a lot or nothing But again I agree that he looked scared

Just to be clear: It appeared that Bennett was upset w the rook bringing him down like nothing period. Following the take-down I also feel that the rook trembled in his cleats..

Its possible the Coach didn't like seeing good tough play being "punished"

That's about all I can tell ya guys But again it appeared hhe was s c a r e d!

FEAR nothing but the LORD right

Why do you keep repeating the same thing? Who cares if Fuller was scared? What does that have to do with anything?

Would anyone mind paraphrasing the article? There is so much site nagging that I am unable to read the original article that is linked.

The suspension obviously has little to do with the actual fight so any true insight would be enormously helpful.

Is Bennett on his way out? Is this a serious situation?
That link is a video w heading : Chicago Bears

Bears' Martellus Bennett fined, suspended after altercation

The storyline is: Chicago Bears tight end Martellus Bennett has been suspended indefinitely and fined for conduct detrimental to the team, general manager Phil Emery said Tuesday.

It wasn't really a "fight" It might be worth listening to 670 the score online, if ya really want anything more ie. speculation

I was just pointing out that Fuller was scared, which was in agreement w another poster

However Im not exactly sure anyone cares if Fuller is scared and/or otherwise

Fuller being scared has nothing to do w nothing yet ie. Ward is retired But if some associate scared w being "soft" It might not be a good thing

Im actually getting ready to call it a day, but I didn't want to leave TDMills hanging if he had any questions etc. (just respect that I like/ Its kinda like not walking away while talking)

I hope this doesn't sound to rude, but did you have anything to add to the actual discussion?
I came in here because this was the first I had heard about this situation so I was reading all the posts. I don't fully understand the situation and I'm not sure everybody knows the full story yet, so I'm not sure there's anything I can add. I just wasn't sure what Fuller being scared had to do with anything as far as how it relates to Bennett. It was mentioned once and it wasn't a big deal, but you kept repeating it multiple times so I was wondering if it had something to do with this situation somehow.

If I had to guess I would guess that this is the Bears trying to send Bennett a message that he needs to get over himself and he needs to start being a team player. It seems like he's in his own world and is just doing whatever he feels like. The Bears don't really have anybody to replace him with so they obviously need him. I think they're just hoping this will be an eye opener for him.

How come Marc Trestman is getting a pass here? This wasn't suspension worthy. He is dictating the use of the "N" word? Doesn't want it in the building?

I have never liked this guy and I thought he would fall flat on his butt, that said I was impressed with the offense and I wanted to rethink my position. But after hearing all of this I am not optimistic that he has really changed his stripes. His longest stint was in the CFL, I understand he had some decent success as an OC 15 and 20 years ago but the guy always struck me as thinking a little too highly of himself and I am starting to see that here.

I know there is a good section of the new NFL fan base that probably applaud this kind of forward thinking and discipline by the coach and to you folks I can only shrug. It's football it's not the cubicle world as much as you so want these guys to live and behave by the same rules all of us are forced to abide by, just never gonna happen.

Bears have the talent to go far this year, should be a freight train on offense so we'll see how Trestman leads these men this year. But if he misses out on the playoffs or does a 1 and done, have the Bears really moved ahead since Lovie Smith was jettisoned? I bet the Bucs are improved this year by leaps and bounds, time will tell.

My initial thought wasn't a pass for Trestman

However I like some of the changes that have occurred up to this point ..

Im gonna have to say I trust Tres made the right call w/ what Ive seen and know to this point..

What IF this fired up in the locker room? Assault charges / Police / lost wages / missed games

He made a lot of mistakes last year as a head coach namely trotting out Robbie Gould from 47 yards out on a 2nd and 7 in Overtime against a pretty paltry Minnesota defense. Kick ends up a few inches to the right and probably would hav been good if they and just picked up another 4-5 yards. He cried he was worried about his team turning the ball over.

Vikings 23 Chicago 20

Hey Cliff, the thing is Trestman undoubtedly helped the offense. There is almost no question about it, light years ahead of the last regime on the surface. But can he actually do the things a HC needs to do in order to take a team into the playoffs? A lot of fans think coaches don't matter much but I believe the opposite and that was a game where he probably cost them a game by not doing the right thing. Settling for 45-50 yard FGs and putting that kind of outcome on a PK when the HC should have advanced the ball another 10-15 yards is pretty crummy IMHO.

Does that mean Trestman can't take the next step this year? I hope Chicago fans don't get upset over my comments, the guy was shunned by the NFL and plucked out of the CFL, that's just a fact. So Trestman IMO needs to show he can be a guy who helps create wins from losses, not have potential wins snatched away from fear of a fumble.

Once a knucklehead...always a knucklehead.

He was the absolute same in Dallas and it wore thin on his team mates and coaches. He is super talented and plays pretty well on Sunday's, but he comes with some attitude, laziness and a sense of entitlement.

Bennett's ADP has actually RISEN over at FantasyFootballCalculator thanks to this suspension. Dammit. I was landing him very late, 11th/12th round in 12 man PPR, and was loving him as my sneaky "wait forever" TE1. Now thanks to his shenanigans, people are remembering that he's on the Bears and had a pretty great 2013. Knucklehead, indeed.

Have you read Trestman's book? As HC of the Alouettes, he chewed out his players on the team bus once because they left a mess for the driver to clean up, which was disrespectful to the bus driver. During games, any of his American players not standing quietly when they played the Canadian National Anthem got a tongue lashing for not respecting Canada and its fans, because if not for Canada and the CFL they might not be playing professional football.

Trestman takes this respect thing seriously.

Watching the video clip, I wouldn't interpret Fuller as being scared, but he was definitely surprised and in shock that he got body slammed by Bennett after the play was over.

Guys Its killin me to see this "quoted" (CB Fuller looked scared)

I probably would have never posted what I believed to be irrelevant info, which could be condescending to a degree. However another Member posted such Info, but was rebuked..

Im just sayin fwiw, I thought I too seen a scared reaction.

Obviously its possible some real chit talkers could read the body language better than I, so I don't have issue with anyone having no respect for my comment.

But lets make sure that we know what were quoting!

Fuller has his hands on the ball, tries to rip it out, and it sends Bennett flying. Bennett got up yelling crazy ####, Fuller put his hands up like "what's the problem," and then Bennett went straight Cobra Kai on him.

I don't see where this "scared" thing is coming from. He's a rookie. He wasn't going to get up in Bennett's face. Brandon Marshall got up in Bennett's face after the fact and they had words apparently.
