(RotoWire) According to head coach Tom Cable, McFadden is "pretty close" to starting, the Oakland Tribune reports. Analysis: Cable mentioned that he was looking to get McFadden more than 20 touches in a game, which is a good sign for McFadden's fantasy owners. Justin Fargas is a favorite of the Oakland coaching staff, but McFadden is too talented to remain in a reserve role.

If this kid can stay healthy and get 20 touches a game he is easily a RB #1 for fantasy purposes.

That's a big IF. As a fan I'm praying he can stay healthy. For FF purposes he is one of those RBs (especially PPR) that can sneak into the top 10 if he stays healthy and the Raiders don't implode again. I'm sure it's been discussed in other threads, but you can't ignore Michael Bush, how will the Raiders use him? And how will that affect McFadden? Cable can say whatever he wants, but we all know who makes the final decisions in Oakland.

Yeah, that makes me feel even better about McFadden getting 20+ touches a game.

I'm not a big fan of the kid, but if he's the starter and stays healthy, I can't imagine his floor being worse than a solid #2 back.

 I like hearing this.

Annnnnd how about the rest? Selective quoter.

Cable was asked about fans wanting McFadden to get 20 touches a week. "I was thinking more touches than that," he answered. However, he oddly hedged that by saying, "I’ll tell you the same thing about Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. I know where we're headed." Cable says Oakland's third exhibition will provide a good idea of this backfield's in-season pecking order.

I don't know where that quote came from, but that second statement wasn't in response to getting DMC 20+ carries. This is from Jerry Mac's blog:

When Cable was asked how close McFadden was to starting and carrying the ball more, Cable said, “I’d say pretty close.’’

When it was suggested fans might want to see McFadden get 20 touches a game, Cable said, “I was thinking more touches than that, but if they want 20, we’ll work on it.

Asked about getting McFadden into a groove with additional carries, Cable said, “I’ll tell you the same thing about Justin Fargas and Michael Bush, too. I’m not going to get into any of that. I know where we’re headed, and you’ll see when we get there.’’

While Fargas isn't an elite level back he does a few very important things well. He's a strong inside runner but his biggest asset is his blocking ability which he's proven in camp to be better than both McFadden's and Bush's. It's what's keeping him on the roster.

Actually, both Bush and DMC have been noted for their blocking in camp. And DMC's block of a blitzing LB sprung JaMarcus for his scramble last game. "Proven in camp", dunno where you got that.At this point, Fargas is a nice guy, runs hard--if not smart, blocks well, and can't catch. There really isn't any reason why the carries shouldn't be split between Bush and DMC. Fargas cannot run inside like Bush, and can't run outside like DMC, and they both catch better than he can.
