Beckett 3 Year Extension (1 Viewer)

The total guaranteed value of Beckett's contract is $30 million. Here's how it breaks down:

$2 million signing bonus

$6 million salary for 2007

$9.5 million salary for 2008

$10.5 million salary for 2009

$12 million at club option for 2010. The option becomes automatic if Beckett makes 28 starts in 2009 or he has a total of 56 starts in 2008 and 2009.

As a huge sox fan, i'm estatic. Makes the Burnett/Pavano/Millwood deals look even more awful in retrospect. With Beckett and Lester solidified in the rotation for the next few years, along with Papelbon possibly if he makes the switch to SP, the sox future seems very bright.

So in your opinion this is a bad deal with the current market on pitchers? I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong, i'm just curious what your thoughts on this are.

I'm shocked Beckett would sign this deal. He must really love it there, because his market value would be far higher considering the Pavano/Burnett/Clement deals (not to mention what guys like Zito and Mulder will get this offseason).

Great, great signing by Boston.

Do the figures for 2008 and 2009 even mean anything, or is that just window dressing to make the deal look more appealing?

How is he any different a pitcher than Burnett or Pavano. Beckett is way overrate
He's pitching aint he? That makes him better than Pavano in my book.
right now.IMO all 3 have great stuff, all 3 are injury prone, all 3 have shown flashes of dominance (Burnett no-hitter, Beckett 03 WS), Beckett and Burnett have never even had a good season (at least Pavano had one good full season). Thats why I think all 3 guys are basically interchangeable and all are overrated.

Shady, just do the math. His contract is less than all 3 of the others. Millwood has been very inconsistent as well this year and he's making 12 million a year with 3 to go.

Pavano hasn't pitched in a year and a half and Burnett has missed close to half the year.

A guy can't even come on here and state the obvious that the Sox got good value considering the market.

Right now the contract is great value. But when Beckett gets hurt next year we'll be saying the same thing. Pitchers dont just stop becoming injury prone.

Hypothetical situation: If Beckett were to be a FA this offseason, how much do you think he would sign for? Looking for years/salary

Beckett is also only 26 years old.

He hasn't been injured yet this year, knock on wood.. But I guess according to you, we should expect him to go down anytime now.

Burnett money

I'm not sure how you are calling Beckett injury prone.

He has made 21, 23, 26 and 29 starts the past 4 years and has 20 starts already this year.

Over that same time span Pavano has made 22, 32, 33, 17 and 0. Burnett has made 29, 4, 19, 32 and 7 thus far this year.

Beckett has had blister problems but not arm problems. I would not classify Beckett in the same injury category as Pavano and Burnett.

Great signing by the Sox.

BTW. The Beckett trade is one of the best trades I have seen in a long time. The Sox get Beckett who has been good and Lowell who has been outstanding and the Marlins got Hanley Ramirez who has had a very good rookie season thus far and got Anabel Sanchez who just pitched a gem today for the Marlins.

Both teams won.

To be fair asking his FA price this year isn't exactly relevant - he wasn't a FA after this year. The real issue is how much would he have gotten in arb. this year, and then how much as a FA for the 2-3 years after that.I see it as a good/great signing for the Sox, and a security/good move for Beckett.

Not trying to be fair, just trying to gauge what the perceived market value for Beckett would be. Me thinks it's > $10M/yr.

Yes, only because I think he has great stuff and he is a decent pitcher. I think he'll be okay, but he'll never be a Cy Young award type guy.

The current market for pitchers is tough and expensive. With Schilling done next year and Wakefield very iffy, to get Beckett, Lester and Papelbon in the starting rotation for the future makes me happy as a Sox fan.

JMHO.

:goodposting: I think? WTH are you doing with a name of STEELCURTAIN if you are a Sox fan?Beckett has a lot of years left. This is his first year in the AL. I think he will get it figured out. I like a Sox rotation with Beckett, Papelbon and Lester at the top. All you need are a couple of reliable 4th and 5th guys at the back of the rotation and a closer. Hansen may or may not be that guy.

Sox fans still happy with this? I'm honestly curious.
I wasn't nearly as high on "Way Back" Beckett as others were when we traded for him (some were calling him a future ace; I think he's a very good #3), and 3/4 of the way through his first season here, he's done nothing to give me any more confidence in him. Also, it drives me nuts how he's always shaking off Varitek. That being said, it's not like money is an issue to the Red Sox, and he's as good or better than almost any other available young arm.
