Ben Roethlisberger Going Forward (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure why the other Roethlisberger thread was locked but I think a discussion about him is warranted given his high ADP, his dismal play thus far and the likely negative results this is having on his owners' fantasy seasons. Here's what I posted in the other thread:

I don't think this is a fishing trip. The guy looks absolutely awful right now. He looks to be afraid of the pressure and he's feeling pressure even when none is there. His INT in the first half was inexplicable. Yes, he's hurt and yes the offensive line has some issues but last night we watched Kyle Orton make several big plays against the same defense that Roethlisberger looked inept against last week. Kyle Freaking Orton.

If the starting QB for the Steelers was not named Ben Roethlisberger, he would be sitting on Waiver Wires in many fantasy leagues right now. That's how bad he's been.

Maybe he turns things around in the second half tonight against the Ravens. As a Roethlisberger owner I'm hoping like hell he does. But he looks like an inept Division 2 QB out there right now and not someone who is recognized as one of the best QBs in the league.

I know we have the Sell High Ben thread but that's come and gone. His value is at an all-time low so it's doubtful you can trade him for anything of any value right now. He's impossible to start in anything other than Start 2-QB leagues and even in those he's killing his owners with his inept play and pitiful production. If you removed his name and just looked at his numbers, you'd be getting laughed at for starting a QB putting up this kind of horrible production right now.

I'm not sure there's a good answer. Frankly, I'd strongly consider dropping him in smaller leagues right now if a quality option (such as Hasselbeck, for example) was available. In larger leagues, you're probably stuck with him since it's doubtful anything of value is on the WW to replace him with. In Start-2 QB leagues, I don't think you can start him right now. Even if it means going with Joe Flacco, that may be the move to make until Roethlisberger shows some signs of turning things around.

The good news is the Steelers have a wealth of talent at the skill positions. Ward, Holmes and Miller are good options in the passing game. Parker, when healthy, is a very talented RB. Mendenhall might be. So it's not like Roethlisberger doesn't have the potential to turn things around. But I think the problem with Roethlisberger is just as much mental as it is physical right now. He doesn't look comfortable or confident in the pocket.

And until he solves that issue, he may continue to be one of this year's biggest fantasy busts.

I couldve ruined my chances this season when I traded away Warner before the season (for Roddy White & Heath Miller, oof) figuring I had a solid QB in Ben. Now I spent a ton of money on JT OSullivan and will attempt to spend the rest of my bidding money on Schaub who was dropped last week. Will have to mix and match between the 3 QBs and I might have to drop Ben soon.

this really is pathetic, Ben is definately untradeable at this point, gotta find someone with a really good #2 QB that could use some of RB or WR depth, this sucks, kyle orton is always out there...is he really feasible at this point?

I also have Big Ben, but it looks like I will be starting Delhomme from here on out. Heading into the season, I looked at Ben being a "safe" pick, in that he wouldn't lose a game for me, but would be consistent enough to get enough points week in and week out to keep me competitive at the position. He is definitely a better "reality" player than "fantasy" player, and as a previous poster said, if his name was anything but Roethlisberger, he'd be on everyone's WW.I may actually drop him for Schaub this week.

I think with the injuries to Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall along with the constant blitzing by teams, the team MUST start passing more.

Quick passing to keep the defense off balance and occasionally sting them with a long one in man coverage is the answer. Combine that with the no huddle and they have a new direction to try.

As shown in the 2nd half of this Ravens game, they are getting better results with these changes.

his history of having so many games with sub 250 yards passing was enough to keep me away from him this year with the changes to the line

Jax defense has been average this season. I have a feeling Ben has a big game vs them. Especially considering they have no running game at this point, theyll be passing in the red zone.

Eventually Arians might discover that screen passes and safety valves are effective against the blitz. Until he does and starts calling plays accordingly Ben is going to struggle. You simply can't send everyone on 20 yard patterns when your QB has 1.5 seconds to throw.

I don't like to see anyone get hurt but Kendall Simmons going down could be the classic case of addition by subtraction. The dude is awful -- he can't block and he is Mr. False Start.

:goodposting: This is another test for Ben to establish his legacy. He's already known as one of the best young QBs, but many still think he's a game manager who can't win it on his own. Now, with the loss of his RBs and starting G, will he rise to the challenge or will he get sacked 10 times a game? The 2nd half of last night's game was probably better than we should expect (he will get sacked a lot), but I think he rises to the challenge, throws for 250+ / 2-3 TDs per game from here on out. They won't become the Patriots or Broncos, but it will be interesting to watch

I would like to see any qb in the league even manage a game when they have an average of 1.5 seconds to throw the ball. I don't think this year should be any indication of how good or bad a qb Ben is. The offensive line is an absolute mess.

The OLine wasnt that bad last night. Ben seemed to have happy feet in the 1st half last night. A few times he bounced around as if people were coming after him but nobody was near him. He settled down in the 2nd half.

He definately holds the ball too long, however he makes some of his best plays fighting off a tackle. As a Steelers fan, I'm just hoping he can last the season.

I traded for Delhomme this week as I also have doubts in Big Ben. But he does still get to play the Bengals twice, so he is worth holding on to, if only for that reason....

I'm not sure what your point is, comparing Orton to Roethlisberger. Put Orton on the Steelers and he'd put up similar numbers to Big Ben. People like to hate on Orton, I really don't understand why. He was a great college QB. He hasn't had much opportunity in the NFL because he was on a bad team, with a FO committed to Grossman. Yet, when he's played, he's been a winner for most of the time. He's still, as far as playing time goes, in the learning curve for QBs.
