Benching Calvin Johnson This Week? (1 Viewer)

Lot of talk on the Audible this week about the merits of benching CJ on Turkey Day against the Titans. Thoughts? I'm sort of on the fence about it, but I'm a firm believer in that most hallowed of fantasy football tenets: "Don't bench your studs."

Anyone thinking of doing this? I could be driving a :honda: here as well, but I don't see it anywhere.

only reason to bench Calvin is the brutal play at QB, not the Defense. Pepper has been bad, but not bad enough to bench him IMO... just wait until pep is benched again and Drew Henson comes in, then maybe CJ should be benched.

Kevin Smith Yes, Calvin No.

When Tenn is up 24 nothing watch the garbage time. Garbage time being the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters.

Is Haynesworth playing? The Lions may suck but CJ and Smith have proven they can put up numbers even when playing tough D's and regardless of if they're way behind or not. If Haynesworth is out Smith could be a good start in deeper leagues.

see weeks 1-12 of the bench Calvin threads.

He is the one guy in your lineup you start regardless of matchup or which QB is playing.Week in and week out, as consistently productive as any WR.Wk Opp Trgt Rec Yrd Avg TD FFPts 1 at ATL 10 7 107 15.3 0 10.7 2 GB 12 6 129 21.5 2 24.9 3 at SF 10 4 40 10.0 0 4.0 5 CHI 6 2 16 8.0 0 1.6 6 at MIN 7 4 85 21.3 1 12.5 7 at HOU 4 2 154 77.0 1 21.2 8 WAS 6 4 57 14.3 1 12.4 9 at CHI 18 8 94 11.8 1 14.8 10 JAC 7 2 92 46.0 0 9.2 11 at CAR 10 6 65 10.8 1 12.5 12 TB 6 3 66 22.0 1 12.6

Unless it was between him and, say, Boldin or Jennings, would I bench MEGATRON.

I need him in 2 leagues where I HAVE to win this week. I have other options, but noone the caliber of MEGATRON. I'll sink or swim w/ him.

i've gotten to the point where I never bench Calvin Johnson, but I always worry because the lions are so bad! I always wonder, is this the week they get shut out? My other WR's are S. Smith(Car) and B. Bowe so I'm always trying to decide between Bowe and Johnson. Lately I've been thinking it should be Smith on the bench and Johnson and Bowe starting.

In a start 2 WR league, my other options besides Megatron are Boldin and T.O., and I'm not even sure that I'll bench him. As posted above, he's scored TDs in 6 of the last 7 games even in a putrid offense.

My biggest concern with him is his scoring is more often due to the BIG play. In 4 of his last 7 games, he's averaged over 20 yards per catch, which is great, except that his number of receptions in those 4 games were 4, 2, 2 and 3.

In summary, I think Calvin is actually a high risk/high reward player, not the "steady as she goes" player that his weekly scoring would seem to indicate.

Even though Calvin has not faced many favorable passing matchups he has pretty much produced every week. He is a must start WR regardless of matchup.

I agree. I can't remember any player who just barely does great...if that makes sense.

This is the 1st time this year I am seriously considering benching Johnson. In a league with a flex option I plan on going R. Brown/McFadden at RB, Boldin/R. White at WR and then pick any one of these guys as the flex: C. Johnson, Westy or R. Bush.

I'm considering going with Cotchery against Denver. CJ may catch another TD but the matchup isn't favorable and I think the QB limits his chances for a big game.

Moi aussi. I have been starting CJ relgiously but in PPR, I am always waiting for him to catch more than 2 passes a game. Given that I have TJ sitting on my bench, I think the move might be to sit CJ this week for a guaranteed 8 catch week from TJ.

Honestly, Calvin is just missing having some monster games.

I watched the game Sunday because I'm a Buc fan and the Lions went deep to Calvin several times. His first catch of the game was a thing of beauty. He simply went up over the corner and safety and snatched the ball out of the air. On the touchdown he shielded his body from the defender and went up and caught the ball where no other player would have a chance to go get it.

He just missed catching another deep ball down the left sideline later in the game on a rollout by Culpepper in double coverage. The ball hit him in the hands, but the defender behind him made a nice play and knocked it out.

He had another deep target later that he probably would have caught, but the safety pushed him in the chest right before he went up to get the ball. Pass interference wasn't called. Calvin was livid and so was the Lion bench.

The Lions are making a conscious effort to get Calvin the ball. The only way I would consider benching him is if Stanton becomes the starter. He looked really pathetic.

Culpepper seems like he is starting to get more comfortable in the offense. They do need to start hitting Calvin more on some of the intermediate routes in garbage time, which I think is probably more of a timing problem with Daunte than anything else. If the manage to figure that out Calvin is going to be very studly down the stretch.
