Didn't have this same discussion last year against a couple of tough D's and didn't he do pretty decent?

The Bears game last year comes quickly to mind. This is only week #1 - it is going to take a couple of weeks to get a feel for my guys (like Chris Johnson) and the NFL in general. Since I have other options in a PPR and am going to sit him. My decision to sit him may backfire this week, but hopefully I'll learn and move forward.

But this years Steelers D might be one of the best in the NFL's history. And its at Pittsburgh. First game after a Super Bowl year the stadium will be poppin. Expect around 60-80 total yards and no touchdowns.. hope for no fumbles.

IIRC, he had a pretty solid game against Pittsburgh last year. Something like 15 points.

I was planning to start Pierre Thomas over CJ3, but probably not anymore.

PPR: start him

non ppr: if better options yes, if not then no.

again, never bench your studs.

i think this game is gonna be closer then people think. the steelers pass defense is suspect, and they still have issued against draw plays, etc.

wk 16 vs. PIT: 16/69/1 2/ 1/0

Unless I have a much better option, I don't typically draft guys in the 1st/early 2nd round and then bench them week 1.

Undecided.

I am considering benching him for Rice in a non-PPR. I doubt I will have the nerve to do it but just have a gut feeling Rice will perform better v KC than Johnson @ Pitt in a primetime game.

I'd start him. Even if they're down, he'll be out there catching garbage passes. If they're in it or leading, he'll be the reason why. Week 1, you have to start who you drafted.

I have CJ in 2 leagues, definitely starting him in one with deep lineup and no option remotely better. The other, benching him for LT.

Exactly, it's not a matchup I'm looking forward to but I am not benching a guy I took in the first round because of it. With his speed, he's the one guy who could break a long gainer to boost his stats up.He'll get in the endzone.

I've got Witten, McFadden, Desean Jackson...all vying for the flex with Johnson in a 10 teamer.

Right now leaning towards McFadden.

I say start him because he is HR threat so you never know when he will break a 70 yarder and also they will probably throw to him more since the Steelers will stuff the run.

Last year against good defenses:

vs. Minnesota 17 rushes for 61 yards with 2 TDs. 3 catches for 14 yards.

@ Baltimore 18 rushes for 44 yards, 2 catches 4 yards.

@ Chicago 14 rushes for 8 yards, 2 catches for 15 yards.

vs. Pittsburgh 16 rushes for 69 yards with 1 TD, 2 catches for 1 yard.

vs. Baltimore in the playoffs. 11 rushes for 72 yards with 1 TD. 1 catch for 28 yards (also left the game prematurely due to injury).

I'd say that was 3 good games (all home, this game is at Pitt.) against 2 bad. You decide.

start him. there's also the fact that you get to watch the opening game of the 2009 season with a vested interest in the most exciting player on the field.

If I have a decent option he should see the bench, but if the choice is mediocore talent and mediocore match-up he starts.

BTW, your last handful of Shark pool threads (IMO) have asked good questions and been thought provoking.

If you would bench Johnson, who wouldn't you bench against Pitt.? Tomlinson, Peterson, Forte?
Hmmm...no I think you start those guys...they all get their goalline carries.
Johnson's TDs last year were 50/50 inside/outside the 10.
okay...just saying he doesn't get all the goalline carries.
That's the same whether he's playing Pittsburgh or anyone else.

Of course, but it's amplified vs. Pittsburgh because as he showed last year, his yards will likely be limited.

yeah, just wish we could get rid of some of the tools, but that's what happens in here this time of the year...all the novices start flooding, people are emotionally tied to players they've drafted etc. etc.

Johnson was drafted in your top 2 rounds for a reason. Talent always finds a way to win you games. I started AP two years ago against the #1 run D (Chicago), and he ran for the single game rushing record and three TD's.

If you are considering benching your 1st round pick the very first game of the season, doesn't that tell you he was not worth a 1st round pick? Probably should have taken a QB or WR at that spot, a player you won't bench no matter the matchup.

I would bench him, It would be different if it was not THE best defense in the league BAR NONE!

People who say always play your studs are people who don't win titles!

Last year I caught flack for benching Portis for the now unrostered D. Rhodes in wk 16, at the end of the day a lot of people were not talking that, infact they were not even answering there phones!

Bottom line is its ur team, u have a gut which seems to be telling you to put him on the pine!

Having the name CJ just dont put points on the board, Pitt puttin 8 in the box easy this game, heck maybe even 9 with that horrble Tenn passing game lol!

IMO.....SIT HIM DOWN WITHOUT RESERVATION! I'm benching Portis (vs. NYG) for Rice (vs. KC)

Its week one, who knows what will happen, see if he is not gonna jave a soph jinx!

I'd hesitate to bench your first round pick for no reason. "But he's playing a good D" is not a reason imo.

I totally respect people having doubts about his value this year. But those folks wouldn't draft him. Unless someone awesome fell to you late and you have the equivalent of three first-round talents, I think you're just trying to be cute with your lineup.

I believe owners should do what they want and I'm NOT a believer in "never bench your studs." But in week 1? If your first round pick is not a definite starter in week 1...you blew the pick. But I hope whatever you decide works in your favor.

It would be one thing if this was an early/midseason game, where we've seen proof of concept that the PIT D is back to being all-world.

Not saying that PIT D won't be strong this year, it's just that Week 1 performances can be all over the map -- 4 preseason games are good tune-ups, but now the games matter, and OCs are rolling out the entire playbook, giving Ds new looks they may not have necessarily game-planned as well for.

Benching anyone in Week 1 based on matchup isn't the best strategy, IMHO.

I've always felt in Week 1 you have to throw your sausage on the table and start the guys you drafted to play. I try not to worry too much about the match ups until I see how the defenses pan out over the first couple of weeks.

Pittsburgh at home is not just a "Good D".
December 28, 2008 - Jamal Lewis 94 yardsDecember 7, 2008 - Tashard Choice 88 yards rushing, 78 yards receivingNovember 16, 2008 - Tomlinson 57/1 with 45 receivingSeptember 29, 2008 - Le'Ron McClain 63/1 with 26 receivingThey're a very good D but backs can put up decent stats against them.ETA: with the possible exception of LT, CJ3 is better than these 4, by far.
