Bengals DT B. Robinson Likely Moving To DE (1 Viewer)

More evidence to me Marvin Lewis plans to use more 3-4 looks. I was shocked the Bengals didn't do more to address a edge rusher at DE so far. Adams isn't a true 3-4 NT, but maybe it isn't too late to teach and old dog new tricks. Now you have a tweener like Robinson projected to start. Pollack, along with Robinson, seems to be the keys now. They can give them the flexibility to move back and forth between a 3-4 and 4-3 without changing personal between downs.

And Geathers was a liability against the run last season as well as struggling to provide the same pass rush he did the season before in the 3rd down role.

I know you aren't a big fan of Geathers but these tidbits from KFFL....Bengals | Slimmer, quicker Geathers?

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals DL Robert Geathers has slimmed down from 287 to 265 pounds in hopes of regaining the speed and quickness that made him a big-play defensive end as a rookie.

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports the Cincinnati Bengals would like to use DT Robert Geathers at the defensive end position next to DT Sam Adams. Geathers has dropped 20 pounds in the offseason in an attempt to regain some quickness. At just 23 years old, the Bengals think Geathers has yet to reach his potential.

Actually, I was awful high on Geathers before last season and thought he'd be a nice sleeper. Showed good pass rush, was looked to have the ability to stand up to the run, especially if he worked at using leverage. The weight gain was secondary. As to the second quote, I don't know why a lineman would lose 20 pounds only to move inside. Most successful 3 technique tackles (not that that's what Geathers necessarily would become) are still upwards of 280 pounds. I'm no Marvin Lewis, but taking Frostee Rucker still frosts the Bengal fan inside me every time I think about it. Way too many better 4-3 options there, and way too many potential tweeners/NT to fit into a 3-4 as well.

Sure, having a bunch of guys that can play either scheme is nice. But when you haven't proven that you can play either scheme very well, it doesn't do a whole lot of good. Don't get me wrong, I like Sam Adams, but the holes in the front seven may keep them out of the playoffs this season if Palmer isn't 100% from Week 1.

Geathers won't be a viable player as a DT/3rd down pass rusher. Even if he gets 8-9 sacks, he'll be extremely lucky to top 30 tackles. Bye week replacement at absolute best.

Jene-Any second thoughts about your analysis on Geathers at this point? I have a decision to make at DE, with him being one of my candidates to be cut:

Kearse, Jevon

Tuck, Justin

Udeze, Kenechi

Geathers, Robert

Williams, Mario

As you can see, I've worked for the last two years to improve this spot on my roster. At present, I'm inclined to cut Geathers, although Tuck and to a lesser extent Udeze are candidates as well; Tuck can be placed on my practice squad though.

If your analysis remains valid, then I'm almost certainly dumping Geathers.

Nope.Been confirmed in mulitple places since this note and during camp that Geathers will be a situational player. Justin Smith and Bryan Robinson are the starters. FWIW, there's no longer any question in my mind that the Bengals become a 3-4 team next year and there is absolutely no value in owning Geathers as a 3-4 OLB. IMO, there's no reason not to cut Geathers.

And, no, Bryan Robinson won't have any value either. The pass rush this season, if there's any at all, will come from blitz packages. Dexter Jackson, Madieu Williams, and the linebacker du jour (Simmons, Pollack, Thurman) will all be expected to get into the backfield frequently.

BTW, check out Sam Adams at Bengals.com, too. He's currently pushing 380 pounds and I'm pretty sure the webpage is tilted toward his side of the picture. Make sure your machines are secure before clicking on the link please.

Thanks, Jene. :bye: Geathers.

Oh, and as a M. Williams owner, :pickle:

redman's mention of Robert Geathers in the look-ahead LB thread reminded me that I wanted to update this thread since I'd knocked him for much of the last year.

At the risk of coming off as a roller-coaster reactionary here, Geathers is impressing me again. Not just the situational sacks, either. I commented above that I didn't think Geathers would have much value in a 3-4 OLB role, and that may still be true for standard leagues. However, Geathers has been used differently over the past two games. He's been moved around the defensive line in a stand-up, pass rusher role -- sometimes starting over the A gap, sometimes off the edge, and sometimes as a down lineman. He's been successful putting pressure on the pocket in all situations.

But what's really impressed me have been two plays he's made as a DE in run support. Once, reading a misdirection play well against the Panthers' DeShaun Foster and stringing him out laterally for a six yard loss. Then again, this week holding contain against a Vick bootleg and making a play on the edge. I don't know if getting his weight back down into the 260s has been a major factor or not, but he's clearly getting it. Still not going to be much of a factor in coverage, so he'll be a factor only in big play leagues as an OLB probably. But with the issues at LB in Bengaldom right now, if the Bengals somehow end up in a base 4-3 next season and Justin Smith goes elsewhere, Geathers has upside again.
