Bengals get ‘Lucky’ with college free agents; minicamp Friday through Sunday

By Chick Ludwig | Thursday, April 30, 2009, 11:14 AM

NON-DRAFTED RB LUCKY, WR COSBY

HOPE TO GIVE THE BENGALS A BOOST

The Cincinnati Bengals got lucky in more ways than one this week.

They signed Nebraska running back Marlon Lucky and Texas wide receiver Quan Cosby to free agent contracts. Both were considered among the top 50 non-drafted college free agents.

Scott Wright, president of Draft Countdown, unveiled his list of Top Undrafted Prospects at:

http://www.draftcountdown.com/results/Top-Undrafted.php

Lucky, a 6-foot, 215-pounder, rushed for 1,019 yards for a 5-7 Nebraska squad in 2007, but rebounded with only 517 yards in 2008.

His career rushing average is 4.1, so he gets my vote as a solid pickup.
Good signing here

4.1 at a major college program is pretty bad actually. You want to see at least 5.0 from a college back.

I was going to post on that same point. I could see explaining away a 4.1 if there were mitigating circumstances, but to say the 4.1 is a REASON "he gets my vote as a solid pickup" is silly.

The up-side for the Bengals is Lucky's hands. He posted 70+ receptions in 2007 as well. His ypc is great, but most of his tenure was under the miserable direction of Bill Callahan & a *horrible* OL coach. I think the staff back then forgot to teach the concept of the drive block.

In 2008, he split time with 2 other backs (most notably the breakout performance of Roy Helu towards the end of '08).

He's not going to be the starter anytime soon, but could make the squad and be a COP back.

The Bengals backfield is starting to get crouded now. I guess we will see if being lucky is again better than being good.

Thank you. Now those are reasons I can understand. A whole lot better than the last line of the article.

I think Lucky can have a nice career as a 3rd down back. I don't think he has a chance at ever becoming a starter though. He was hurt most of last year, which is one of the main reasons his #'s were down.

Strengths:

There was no rb in this draft better at catching the ball out of the backfield than Lucky. He has great hands. He played in the WCO for 4 years and he can pick up the blitz. He's also an excellent passer and had a few td passes during his career. He did line up in a wildcat formation a few times last year.

Weaknesses:

Doesn't have elite speed. While he was widely considered the #2 rb coming out of highschool (behind Jonathon Stewart), he never lived up to expectations. Doesn't have a lot of wiggle. Won't break many tackles either. He's somewhat injury prone.
