Bengals - Lions notes (1 Viewer)

This is primarily a placeholder post, but, even though the sample size is minimal, there are already a few things worth noting after watching the ones for one series each.

Frazier had the Lions lined up in a fair amount of 46 looks during the first two series
Ernie Sims is still nuts and all over the field. He is quicker to the sideline than Lenon. Also used in a A gap blitz twice.
Lenon and Sims in the nickel for Detroit.
Lenon isn't the next Urlacher.
Landon Johnson and Caleb Miller in the nickel, although the Bengals played some base defense against 3WR sets
Madieu Williams looks much more sudden in run support and surer tackling in the first series

Who started at mike...Miller or Brooks?

Brooks.Into the second series now and it's clearly Miller and Johnson in the nickel. So much for "not coming off the field"... :goodposting: .

Filling in the gaps now. Through the first half and I'll just edit this post as I go...

Detroit

Stanley Wilson started with Travis Fisher as the nickel back. Lions playing a lot of man coverage but the corners didn't appear to be anything special. Johnson and Henry caught some balls underneath the coverage. I didn't notice anything special in run support.

While any 4-3 MLB is worth rostering in most leagues, Lenon played up to his consensus mid 40s ranking. Didn't shed well, missed tackles when in position. Did look good getting back into the deep zone on the rare Tampa-2 calls but didn't make a play. Sims was almost always at the ball before Lenon.

The Lions brought Kennedy into the box A LOT against the Bengal ones. Lot of man coverage on the outside.

Baldwin was first off the bench at MLB. He didn't get a lot of snaps in the first half against the Bengal ones and twos because he sat in nickel packages. He made a nice play on a delayed blitz and looked decent in run support. Blown out of one run but shed nicely to make a play on another.

Anthony Cannon and either Boss Bailey or Alex Lewis were the second team nickel guys. Cannon looked okay, but nowhere near as sudden and crazy as Sims.

Alama-Francis is, yes, raw. Got good push on some plays, but the Bengal third string tackles got under his pads fairly consistently.

Cincinnati

Didn't mention it before but Geathers played every down despite hints that he'd reprise his situational role this year. He may wear down but he looked very good on the left end. Shed blocks, good lean off the edge (albeit against a TE more often than not). Get him where you can.

Brooks is not going to play in the nickel while Caleb Miller is healthy. Miller and Landon Johnson were the nickel backers the entire first half. Brooks looks really quick for his size but still isn't finishing plays. Probably only a matter of time, though. He was in position much more tonight than he had been after his first games last season. Hartwell was the second team MLB and looked good, although it was against the second team.

Leon Hall has some work to do.

Eric Henderson looks like an interesting player. Jeanty looked solid again as the starter (he also played some end in in the nickel) but Henderson was really active and looks he could surprise at some point as a SLB convert.

Earl Everett has the body of a free safety.

Alama-Francis needs work on technique, as Jene said he is very raw. But his motor and combination of strength and speed are noticeable. He ran a QB down and made him get rid of the ball before he wanted to. He is fast for a man his size.

I love this kids upside a lot. He just needs to learn how to play and utilize his skills.

I posted this in the shark pool, but I went to the Bengals practice on Tuesday and had similar observations. Geathers was lining up with the first unit. He was also lining up all across the line - sometimes with a hand down, other standing up, he also dropped into coverage on several plays, and on one play he lined up outside of Justin Smith. So, it looks like the Bengals plan to utilize him extensively. Having said that, he looked relatively small compared to the other D-linemen, so I wonder how he will hold up to a full time gig over the course of a season.Brooks, to the untrained eye (mine), looked good in the individual drills, but was singled out by the coaches on a couple of 11 v. 11 plays for not being aggressive enough. It seems as if he is still thinking too much, and not simply reacting. On the plus side, he was calling the defensive plays, so I think the coaches have faith that he will become more instinctive as he gets more experience.

How did Daniel Bullocks look? Do you think he will be productive this year?
He had a bad missed tackle on the first play (poor angle), and it resulted in a 21 yard gain. On the very next play, Chad caught a pass and Bullocks nailed him good. I think he has to play better, and fantasy wise, he is limited playing FS. Eventually, he should play SS, but not right away.

I thought he looked very good in coverage -- from what little you can tell from the TV angles he seemed to be in position to make a play often. If the Lions use Kennedy in the box as much as they did last night, he's not likely to get enough tackles to be relevant in most leagues.

Landon Johnson and Caleb Miller in the nickel, although the Bengals played some base defense against 3WR sets
Does this mean Johnson was 1st team WLB? (this may be obvious to those who know more about this than I do, still trying to pick this stuff up) & if he was w/ the 1st team, what happened to the reports that Hartwell would get the start, or should we expect that to come later?

Johnson is the first team WLB and has been since the first depth chart. It's evident (Brooks not in nickel, Hartwell second team MLB, Geathers every down starter) that we can't trust the coaches comments in Cincinnati. Eyes-on only.
