Smith breaks foot

Less than 48 hours after signing his contract, rookie right tackle Andre Smith suffered a fractured foot late in Tuesday's practice and is going to be out of action for what head coach Marvin Lewis called "a few weeks."

In a statement released through the Bengals public relations department, Lewis said, "Andre suffered a small fracture in his left foot during a non-contact drill. Our medical staff tells me the injury will not require surgery. It's too soon to closely predict how long it will be before he can return to practice. But it looks like he's going to miss a few weeks."

"A few weeks" could mean anything. Cornerbacks David Jones and Morgan Trent suffered foot fractures during this preseason and their rehab took about five weeks. But Smith's may not be as long because both Jones and Trent had surgery.

...In a non contact drill. I'll look for a link, but maybe his flapjacks have something to do with it.....tub of goo

Are they sure he did not try to eat his foot and therefor cracked the bone?

I once doctored a study that supported the added weight of Man-Boobs, Moobs, or Mits (clinically known as gynecomastia) can contribute to added stress that may lead to fractures.

On the flip side, Collins has gotten a ton of reps and the line cohesion should be at least better since M-B won't be in the lineup probably until like week 12.

Must've been that solo workout dance thing they showed him doing in the first episode of Hard Knocks that wore his feets out.

2 other thoughts:

He's gonna have a heckuva time keeping the weight off if he can't get around on his feet. Mikey could be saving some $ there.

The Bengals.com article talks about how the Bengals have had a string of injury problems with their first round picks dating all the way back to the infamous Chris Perry. As an aside has there been any study of the injury rate of guys who sign and make camp on time vs. those who hold out?

I wouldn't be surprised to see that there is a higher injury incidence rate for those who do not participate in training camp versus those who do. You miss out on a LOT of conditioning and learning how to play at full speed that your body needs to learn. Jumping into the fray without proper conditioning at full speed when your body isn't used to it seems like a recipe for injury.

Do we know that this didn't happen some time ago and he was hiding it until he was under contract? I would imagine they have to pass some type of physical exam before getting their contract in place, but who knows?

Are we sure Chris Henry didn't shoot him?
Sorry you must be confusing them with the Giants.Anyhow, now it's supposed to be only a 7-10 day thing similar to what Lamont Jordan had. Time will tell I guess on that, but all that weight can't be good for the feets anyhow. Still a tough setback at a bad time and at best he might contribute by the 2nd half of the season IMO.-QG

I mean, for reals?

:moneybag:

I can't wait for this to come up on Hard Knocks next week. It'll just be a shot of a drill, Andre goes down, then

hard to believe after all those incredibly strenuous conditioning drills this showed him doing on hard knocks.

poor guy, really regretting not being back @ Alabama right now.....

Also heard that his contract actually takes away money if he is over a certain weight per game.

Being out of practice for a few days will add another 5-10lbs easily.

Surprised more isn't being made of this. I was optimistic about Palmer, Ocho, and even somewhat about Benson (as a value pick) this summer, but this news, coupled with Palmer already being nicked up, is making me pretty much avoid them completely. Not good at all...

The line has been, well, okay during preseason. Frankly the departure of Ghiaciuc alone was an upgrade right there. It hurts the depth of the team, but frankly the broken foot is incidental at this point - he missed all of camp to begin with so I figure folks have been valuing Bengals players fantasy-wise as if he isn't there.-QG

Can a Bengals homer provide an update on Smith? This was in last week's injury report from FBG:

Code:
OL Cincinnati Bengals - CIN - OT Andre Smith postponed season-ending foot surgery last week due to illness.
This was this week's report:
Code:
OL Cincinnati Bengals - CIN - OT Andre Smith (foot injury) was limited in practices Wednesday and Thursday, and despite practicing fully on Friday he was listed as out on Friday and was inactive on Sunday as expected.
Was last week just a typo? Are we going to see him at all this year?

good bump - Cincy offense is clicking - adding another good OL to the mix would be even better - Palmeris lights out when he has time

Lewis said Jeremi Johnson's or Bernard Scott's knee injuries were considered serious, but that they should know more on both later in the week. He also said that safety Roy Williams (forearm) and offensive tackle Andre Smith (foot) should be probable for the Nov. 8 game against Baltimore.
