It looks to me as if Benson will have more short term value than Norwood. However, I'm leery of Benson's long term value, whereas Norwood ceiling is higher IMO.

Those that voted for Norwood, why do you think he has more value? How many more years will Dunn be there? Benson was selected #4 overall, so how long will that carry weight? Will Petrino get fired and the new coach have some sense? Will Adrian Peterson get more carries this year, and if he does, will Benson demand a trade? For the record, I wouldn't worry about Wolfe. Will Chicago draft another RB in 2008?

I voted for him because he's not Benson - who I think is out of the league by end of 2009 at the latest. Seriously.Benson can demand a trade, but soemone has to want him - and they will, but only on the cheap.

Benson = no skill

Norwood = definate skill

Choose accordingly. Very simple to me, however.

Of the 21 votes cast so far, how many of you are either a Benson or Norwood owner? I would be more interested in the votes casted who own neither. So if you don't own either Benson or Norwood, please post that and who you voted for. We can certainly throw out the Benson and Norwood owner votes. Can you be honest?

I own Norwood in 4 leagues and Benson in 2, so I voted for Norwood.

:own3d:It sounds like you aren't liking the outcome of the poll right now.

Norwood owner and Falcon homer, so toss mine out twice.

I think Petrino will have to pull the trigger this year. Love Dunn, ain't go it no more. Norwood's a home run threat every time he touches the ball, Benson seems more like your 2-3 yards and a cloud of dust.

I really don't care about the outcome of the poll, but if I had to care, then it would be pretty good since I own Norwood in more leagues than I own Benson, lol.

I don't like either of them.

Benson is a plodder with marginal instincts and physical ability.

Norwood has skills, but he's built like an ostrich and I don't think there's any way he'll ever be a consistent featured back from year to year.

Now is a good time to sell these guys.

IMO the team dynamics need to be considered, i.e. PT, coaching, surrounding talent, systems, etc. Norwood > Benson with the ball in his hands, b/c he runs w/ purpose, catches the ball well out of the backfield, and has *gamebreaking* speed. If he can learn to pass protect (mentioned in another thread here that he whiffed a couple of times last night), he could be a nice NFL rb.

That said, ATL is a disaster right now. Harrington is a backup, not a NFL starter. The O line is average. Petrino seems to be in denial about how to utilize Norwood effectively, and the team is bad enough all around that they'll rarely be in a game situation where they CAN work the running game - since they're always playing catch up. (not that the rest of the team can actually catch)

I took Norwood in the 5th round of a dynasty start up league this year, hoping he turns into a starter in a year or two. If not in ATL, maybe somewhere else. I just don't believe (from what I've seen) that Petrino will have the abililty or scenario to play Norwood enough (this year) to give him the proper audition. He seems loyal (to a fault) to Dunn.

For comments on Benson, see the 10 pages of the "Benson Sucks" thread for some choice opinions. Poor vision, no burst, lack of heart, etc.

If ATL could manage to develop a well rounded offense, then Norwood could be a solid RB2. However there are just too many obstacles to overcome this year. He's a decent spot / bye week cover starter (ala last night), but that's his first decent game so far. It might be enough to make the weekly promises of ATL "getting Norwood more involved", but that remains to be seen. Looks like JN and Deangelo will be forced to wait another year for RB1 (on their team) status.

 Agree completely. If you want to take a chance on a buy low, then I guess I'd go Norwood, but I wouldn't pay a lot to get him.

Mora wasn't using Norwood much either. The only thing I can see that could be holding Norwood back from being the starter is his blocking abilities. Is he a bad blocker??? Dunn will be 33 in January. I can't see him starting past this year.

I agree with most of that. One thing I've always hold dear in dynasty leagues, and that is that talent wiins out in the end, and Norwood has more talent than Benson. Like I said, Benson will have more short term value, but long term I prefer Norwood, and I don't have any reservations about that. Benson looks lost IMO, and Norwood looks likes he has purpose and more talent.Edited to add that I wouldn't be surprised if Peterson cuts into Benson's carries even more as the season progresses.

It's not quite that simple. There will be a handful of solid rookie runners entering the draft and Atlanta could easily sign a guy like Musa Smith or Michael Turner to come in and take some of the carries away. So even though Dunn is getting old, there's still no guarantee that Atlanta won't bring in another warm body to vulture a significant portion of the workload. I personally see Norwood as a guy who should ideally get about 10 carries and 2-3 catches every game. That gives him enough touches to make some big plays without wearing him down or forcing him to handle all of the short yardage stuff.

You could say that about a lot of current starting RBs. Ignore what Norwood's done the last couple of years if you wish, but in my eyes he's looked pretty damn good. I think he's a buy low right now, because that won't be the case in 2008.

I own neither in any of my leagues.Id much prefer Norwood.

Norwood didn't get drafted #4, literally cry at the draft and complain that he was disrespected, figuratively cry about anything and everything and then run like a three toed sloth for a year and a half since then. Those honors go to Wimpy Benson.

There's no crying in football. I choose Norwood.

Norwood carried the load fulltime in college for a bad Mississippi State team and averaged 5.6 yards for his career there. I don't see why people think he will wear down. Living in Atlanta I've seen him play for two years and the thing that impresses me is how strong this guy is. He consistently moves the pile. O.J. Simpson had skinny legs when he played. That didn't seem to slow him down.

Norwood has talent. I won't dispute that. His problem is his build. IMO his body type presents natural limitations that will prevent him from ever becoming a full-time starter in the NFL. Most of the best RBs in the NFL are short and stocky. Norwood is skinny with long chicken legs. What this means functionally is less power. I also think it could cause durability issues. I shudder at the thought of him getting 300 carries in the NFL. I think his legs would snap in half. This might seem like an odd analysis considering that his listed dimensions are very similar to those of Tiki Barber and Reggie Bush, but I think if you've seen these guys run you should be able to recognize a considerable difference in body type. Norwood looks like a WR playing RB. I don't feel that way when I watch Barber or Bush play.

If he was 5'10" and 220 with the same skill set then he'd probably already be a star, but I suspect that he'll be resigned to a career as a change of pace back. If the Falcons staff feels the same way then that might help explain their apparent reluctance to hand over the reigns to him.

Even in the SEC college defenders are a huge step down from NFL defenders. Everyone is bigger, faster, and stronger in the NFL. So just because a guy can carry the load in college doesn't mean he'll be a workhorse in the NFL. And for that matter, Norwood never had more than 200 carries in a season at MSU, so he hasn't exactly proven that he can carry the load. All of those arguments apply to Reggie Bush as well, but as I mentioned earlier, I think his body type more closely resembles the NFL RB ideal so I'm less worried about his ability to make the transition.

I did vote for Norwood, and own him in dynasty. However, I have little to no respect for Benson at this time, and wouldn't take him over just about any RB with some upside.

I do share EBF's concern regarding Norwood's build. He just doesn't look like anybody I can remember being successful at the position. However, I do think there is something to the fact that he gained over 3400 yards in the SEC and I can't see any games missed. He was almost the entire offense for that team for two years as well.

Nearly everyone here was critical of Cam Cameron for continuing to give Jesse Chatman carries. As it turns out Cameron was smarter than all of us. He was waiting for Ronnie Brown to step up and take a leadership role before handing him the keys to the offense. I wonder if a similar thing is happening in Atlanta with Petrino and Norwood.

Very pool analysis IMO. There has been a lot of great RBs with more of a slight build that Norwood. His size of 5'11" 204 is bigger than a lot, yet I do wish he was more compact. The legs excuse is the reason for your poor analysis. Bush = chicken legs also.

Of course you feel that way as a Bush owner, lol, and will defend it to the death. Don't forget I'm in the same league as you and know who's on your team.

I don't own either player. I'd like to have Norwood. I wouldn't give you a bag of chips for Benson. Don't like his attitude, injury history or heart. Came out of the SB far too easily. Like what I've seen from Norwood. Love the big play ability. Not sure about Dunn's intentions to keep playing. Not sure that it matters.. feel Norwood may always be part of a RBBC. See Falcons with a power back to replace Dunn... Norwood taking Dunn's role. Still prefer Norwood and the upside promise. Find Benson to be what you see is what you get.

Ultimately, when we're looking back three years from now, I think we'll see Benson as a backup somewhere for the rest of his career (a la Anthony Thomas), and Norwood will get passed on the depth chart at some point by a 1st round rookie or a player in a trade.

Benson just isn't special and that will become clear enough to the Bears (as it has become to most of us who don't own him and therefore aren't hoping for a different outcome), and the Falcons will want a big hoss power back lining up behind the QB like Petrino always had in college.

Neither Benson or Norwood is likely to ever be a long term stud fantasy RB.
