Best albums of 2017 - Playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

How do you guys stay current on new bands or albums?
In addition to what's been mentioned (this thread, Spotify), I follow Stereogum, Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound and Spin on Twitter (and Paste, The A/V Club. And NME for UK stuff. And Exclaim/CBC Radio for Canadian stuff and a bunch more but those first 4 cover new releases pretty well).

I've seen/heard a couple people say it's their best since Songs for the Deaf.
I think Clockwork was easily better than SFTD.     I know opinions on their albums are all over the place.   SFTD (keep in mind I really like it) is probably in 4th place for me in their discography.   SFTD's high points are really high but they're mixed in with a lot of meh.

In any case, excited to hear this new one.

So many albums I want to check out today... I should have brought my good headphones to work :oldunsure:

QoTSA, Iron & Wine, War on Drugs, Tera Melos, The Oh Sees, and Together Pangea are on my list ;)

ETA: Listening to Together Pangea now, and having a blast, it's got a bit of a White Reaper fun-listen vibe going on.

I am too old for this tweety thing you speak of, but I visit those sites for ideas too.

Another one I haven't seen mentioned is RYM.     I mostly go there because I can narrow it down by genre more.  You know, just in case you wanted to see a list of the higher rated stoner metal or dream pop albums of the year.

similar list as mine... except for my kids' influence (foo fighters, katy perry and demi lovato sandwiched in there)

- War on drugs (meh... ok, but sounds the same as last album), together Pangea (liking... trying to remember their last one, which I remember liking too), Thee oh sees (whoa... more heavy sound, less psych... liking the single), Liars, Jacuzzi Boys, A giant dog, Metz,... wow... OMD.

eta: comments on songs

Yeah way too much today. Iron & Wine getting good reviews, QOTSA too. A Giant Dog have one of my favourite songs from last year (Sex & Drugs), War on Drugs will likely be a late night drinking listen for me. Might wait for feedback on Metz and Liars before I dive head first.

The Killers released the third song from their new album yesterday "Wonderful Wonderful", it sounds like it belongs on Sawdust (their b-side compilation avenue) or maybe an early album by The Cure. Or a slow cover of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain - but in either cases still with Brandon Flowers obviously. Between this song and "The Man", this album is shaping up to be interesting.

I was just listening to Hot Fuss the other night. Been walking around with a newly-purchased Killers shirt and figured I'd remember what made Hot Fuss so interesting to me. I love it...beautiful pop. That era was really kind to rock and roll just as everybody was proclaiming it dead.

felt like their stuff had reached a one-note moment a long time ago... good stuff when I'm in the mood for reverby vocals over reverby surf/psych/garage guitars, but not song after song after song.

this new one- Orc-  feels much different... really digging it. production values are maybe up a bit... different sound all the way around.

Saw Sylvan Esso tonight, great show. Like the new album (will provide link when I'm home) but a lot more energy tonight.

Cloakroom (awesome band name) is pretty good. Riyl Title Fight. Idk.
I've heard both Cloakroom and Title Fight owe a heavy debt -- or at least are mentioned often in the same breath -- as Hum, one of my absolute favorites from the nineties. They've got their own little subthread in Hum's subreddit. I will have to check them out.

Brand New debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. First time for them -- and the first independent album this year to do so.

Together Pangea: Bulls and Roosters sounding good. Seems a little more Black Lips/Twin Peaks than I remember them being. I dig it.

ok... this is FAR from 2017. but I'm just finding out about Slint, and don't have anywhere else to comment. I like them.

I'm not sure if I am:

  • Flabbergasted you're just finding out
  • Mad at you as a human being
  • Jealous that you get to digest Spiderland for the first time

Probably some combination of the above, but mostly #3.   Enjoy, that thing is a classic.

I blame you and your ilk for not sharing this info earlier.

honestly flummoxed that something this good and so directly in my wheelhouse- one I was more active in when this came out- was completely off-radar for me for 25 years.

the millenial who sells me cat food always has some good stuff streaming, so we end up talking music every time I'm in there. she has buds in bands in brooklyn, so turned me on to.. dammit- can't remember. DIIV? maybe. so I try to offer ye olden stuff that might sound similar. she seems to have older stuff on too... so we chit that chat about it. she had Slint on yesterday while chatting... I was like- wait... WHO is this? from when?

Isn't Slint from Louisville or something like that? I remember it was supposed to be in my wheelhouse, but it sounded too stuck in the late '80s/early '90s for me.

A top 5 album of the 90's and in my top 100 OAT.

Can't quite put my finger on it, but the new QotSA didn't grab me on the the first couple listens.  Something about the lack of bass or slight sludginess that I loved from their sound?  Not a musician, so not sure how to describe it.

On my second listen to the LCD Soundsystem album this morning. It's like they never left.  AOY candidate in a big way.

agreed- second verse, same as the first.

so far, I do like the previously released singles the most... but yeah- it's all kinds of good if you're an LCD fan.

Dead Stars... can't remember if I've heard them or not... new album Perfect Patterns is a nice jangly blow-back to early REM, Feelies, Pylon, etc. I see spotify has them listed as sim to a lot of bands I like: cloud nothings, white reaper, meatwave, active bird community.
