Best albums of 2017 - Playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

I'm up and down on the I.L.Y.s... but this single is bringing me right back to some great boingy early new wave moog synth bands like the Units. I need to listen to the rest of the album.

their first album felt too much like I was listening to death grips but without the lead guy (which is exactly what I was listening to).

this album, bodyguard, has branched out a bit and feels more well rounded and distinct. I'm really liking it.

I never remember whether I like Death From Above 1979... a bit affected. but so far I'm liking track 1 off their new one, Nomad.

huh. the damned just popped up on my discover weekly... a song I didn't know, but of course I knew.

was aware of the killing joke precedent, not this one.

sorry- wrong thread, just felt like posting somewhere

Well, honestly, Power Trip is probably the only one in the mix for AotY for me but I also liked Mastodon, Elder, Legionnaire, Pallbearer, Sweat Lodge, Kvelertak (is that 2017?), et al. That's just off the top of my head.
Thanks.  Love Mastodon and Elder too.  Pallbearer I remember being hit or miss with me, but not 100% on that.  Will check out the highlighted as well.

I've decided you can't separate vocals from music when doing "sounds like" comparisons, btw. How the hell do you not hear early Strokes in "Glitter", for example.
I'll accept that. but the vocals are part of the sound... and there's a poppy quality to her singing within the melodies and to the harmonies.

but I'll also accept that my initial response to the videos was too myopic given your op. the music backing her is much more like the strokes as you say than anything remotely poppy. I'm hearing a bit of weezer in here too.

pretty uninspiring release radar this week.

with potential:

wavves

yak

the clientele (whoa- forgot about them)

destroyer

funkadelic (remix of cosmic slop? ok then...)

this has been my go-to this week. still really liking it.

anybody else listen to Bodyguard- The I.L.Y.s? the non-rap/screaming side of DeathGrips duo project.

destroyer
I really liked the Destroyer single ("Tinseltown Swimming in Blood") but it was the only thing that really grabbed me on this weeks release radar. The Killers song that's probably on everyone's release radar ("Some Kind of Love") is built around a Brian Eno sample and is a more atmospheric song, not a Springsteen esque jam, if that makes anyone want to hear it. It's pretty obviously a deep album cut but I like it.

Also, Partner is a band on my release radar this week- they just came through my city and are a lesbian couple playing 90s esque alt-rock songs. They're opening for PUP on some upcoming dates but they're not that aggressive. I haven't listened to the new song yet but I wholeheartedly recommend "Everybody Knows" (don't listen to the old ####ty version of this on Youtube, Spotify it) and "Play the Field". The lyrics are quirky and could maybe make or break it for people. I think they're clever and fun as hell.

Also, also, someone is going to listen to the new Foo Fighters and tell us if it's worthwhile, right?

Also, as of tonight, I'm on vacation for 19 days, so there's a chance/high probability that I post italics lyrics at some point somewhere tonight.

Fans of folkier/alt-country inspired music might like Elliott BROOD - Ghost Gardens album released today.

Also, Frightened Rabbit released a 3 song EP, including a duet with Julien Baker, which is the clear highlight of the three, IMO.

Is it safe to say Indie Rock is slowly dying? What happened to the genre?
My singles playlist this year is much better than most of the past few years. no idea how i'm going to cut it down to just 100 songs as I usually do. This year has been great song wise, IMO but maybe a bit softer in terms of front to back great albums.

Also, I think in 3 of the past 4 weeks the #1 Billboard albums have been from Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem and The National, for the latter two, their first ever #1, so no I don't think its fair to say the genre is dying.

Yeah, I agree with you. The year has had very good albums but nothing stands out. LCD, Lorde, The National etc Al to just name a few.

What, no love for Foo Fighters??!!

I got bored after about 3 songs and switched to something else. (actually, Lorde)

I painted the house
I bought sheets that you liked on that trip when we went to Rome
And I got a motorboat for the summer
In case you're done early or if you plan to visit
But wait... D'you plan to visit?

Gonna walk a tightrope
Gonna get kicks every night
No one's holding me back
No one's changing my mind
Get the stars out your eyes
Come and sit next to me
Under Tennessee skies
Down on South Front Street

I took a pledge to grow up
Then drank enough to make me throw up
On all my dearly disappointed friends
I'm just too lazy to make amends
With you anyway
That's why the pattern still remains

Hey, Rostam (ex-Vampire Weekend genius, Hamilton Leithauser collaborator, Haim/CRJ/Solange producer) came out Friday too, seems like no fanfare...? I just saw that P4K reviewed it today or I would have missed it too.

Was Britt Daniel married with kids? Did I hallucinate that?
I have no idea but this profile seems to say no to both. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/inside-spoons-futuristic-hot-thoughts-skrillex-jam-w470899

(the slow-building "WhisperIlllistentohearit," whose refrain, "Someday you won't be so alone" is sung from the perspective of Daniel's father). "I'm not married and don't have kids," Daniel says of why he wrote the latter song. "So it's like something he would say to me. But I don't feel so alone. I feel good."

I don't think I love you anymore
That gold mine changed you
You don't have to hold me anymore
Our cave's collapsing
I don't wanna be me anymore
My old man told me

"You don't open your eyes for a while
You just breathe that moment down."

I don't even know what "Indie Rock" means.... can you hum a few bars or give me some examples? I ask because there's been some amazing post-punk/garage/what I think of as indie rock bands and albums over the last couple years. but I'm terrible with labels.

Wand’s Plum is really good but I suspect no one will hear it since I believe Drag City is only on Apple Music and not yet Spotify. I’ve liked their stuff so I actually bought it (gasp!). If y’all care:

Thanks for the heads up on this one. Love the song linked in that article.

Lead singer channeling his inner Thom---does he sound like that on all the songs?
here's their bandcamp link for a few songs- not the whole album
