2nd new St. Vincent song is phenomenal.
their first album felt too much like I was listening to death grips but without the lead guy (which is exactly what I was listening to).I'm up and down on the I.L.Y.s... but this single is bringing me right back to some great boingy early new wave moog synth bands like the Units. I need to listen to the rest of the album.
tell me more, @Nigel Tufnel....Even though I love them, Oh Sees are usually too scattershot to vie for AotY for me but I keep coming back to Orc. It's easily the psych rock AotY for me but there has been some good metal this year too.
Well, honestly, Power Trip is probably the only one in the mix for AotY for me but I also liked Mastodon, Elder, Legionnaire, Pallbearer, Sweat Lodge, Kvelertak (is that 2017?), et al. That's just off the top of my head.tell me more, @Nigel Tufnel....
huh. the damned just popped up on my discover weekly... a song I didn't know, but of course I knew.
was aware of the killing joke precedent, not this one.
sorry- wrong thread, just felt like posting somewhere
Thanks. Love Mastodon and Elder too. Pallbearer I remember being hit or miss with me, but not 100% on that. Will check out the highlighted as well.Well, honestly, Power Trip is probably the only one in the mix for AotY for me but I also liked Mastodon, Elder, Legionnaire, Pallbearer, Sweat Lodge, Kvelertak (is that 2017?), et al. I've decided you can't separate vocals from music when doing "sounds like" comparisons, btw. How the hell do you not hear early Strokes in "Glitter", for example.a lot poppier than those bands you mentioned. superchunk... the strokes? nfw.
I'll accept that. but the vocals are part of the sound... and there's a poppy quality to her singing within the melodies and to the harmonies.I've decided you can't separate vocals from music when doing "sounds like" comparisons, btw. this has been my go-to this week. still really liking it.their first album felt too much like I was listening to death grips but without the lead guy (which is exactly what I was listening to).I'm up and down on the I.L.Y.s... but this single is bringing me right back to some great boingy early new wave moog synth bands like the Units. this album, bodyguard, has branched out a bit and feels more well rounded and distinct. I'm really liking it.
I really liked the Destroyer single ("Tinseltown Swimming in Blood") but it was the only thing that really grabbed me on this weeks release radar. The Killers song that's probably on everyone's release radar ("Some Kind of Love") is built around a Brian Eno sample and is a more atmospheric song, not a Springsteen esque jam, if that makes anyone want to hear it. It's pretty obviously a deep album cut but I like it.destroyer
My singles playlist this year is much better than most of the past few years. no idea how i'm going to cut it down to just 100 songs as I usually do. This year has been great song wise, IMO but maybe a bit softer in terms of front to back great albums. Is it safe to say Indie Rock is slowly dying? What happened to the genre?
Also, I think in 3 of the past 4 weeks the #1 Billboard albums have been from Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem and The National, for the latter two, their first ever #1, so no I don't think its fair to say the genre is dying. Is it safe to say Indie Rock is slowly dying? What happened to the genre?
Yeah, I agree with you. The year has had very good albums but nothing stands out. LCD, Lorde, The National etc Al to just name a few.My singles playlist this year is much better than most of the past few years. no idea how i'm going to cut it down to just 100 songs as I usually do. What, no love for Foo Fighters??!!pretty uninspiring release radar this week.
with potential:
wavves
yak
the clientele (whoa- forgot about them)
destroyer
funkadelic (remix of cosmic slop? ok then...)
I'm a huge Destroyer fan, and I love this single. Can't wait for the the rest.I really liked the Destroyer single ("Tinseltown Swimming in Blood") but it was the only thing that really grabbed me on this weeks release radar.
I didn't even realize this was out.The Hanged Man from Ted Leo is so good. Probably my favorite album he's made, with or without the Pharmacists, other than Biomusicology.
Was Britt Daniel married with kids? Did I hallucinate that?Gonna walk a tightrope
Gonna get kicks every night
No one's holding me back
No one's changing my mind
Get the stars out your eyes
Come and sit next to me
Under Tennessee skies
Down on South Front Street
I have no idea but this profile seems to say no to both. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/inside-spoons-futuristic-hot-thoughts-skrillex-jam-w470899Was Britt Daniel married with kids? Did I hallucinate that?
(the slow-building "WhisperIlllistentohearit," whose refrain, "Someday you won't be so alone" is sung from the perspective of Daniel's father). "I'm not married and don't have kids," Daniel says of why he wrote the latter song. "So it's like something he would say to me. But I don't feel so alone. I feel good."
I don't even know what "Indie Rock" means.... can you hum a few bars or give me some examples? I ask because there's been some amazing post-punk/garage/what I think of as indie rock bands and albums over the last couple years. but I'm terrible with labels. Is it safe to say Indie Rock is slowly dying? love that courtneys album. will be a top 20 for me this year for sure.
If you like this one, check out Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, a Melbourne band with a similar Smiths/Go-Betweens feel.Sea Pinks - Watercourse
@Eephus turned me on to this band with their 2016 album, Soft Days, which was a favorite from last year. Another solid album from this year.
funny- PINS just came up on my release radar yesterday, and I thought it was pinback so got confused when the sound was substantially different. I really liked the pinback from... wow... probably 10 years ago. lookin forward to checking this one out.
Already a big fan.Eephus said:If you like this one, check out Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, a Melbourne band with a similar Smiths/Go-Betweens feel.

Yes! He sounds like Yorke quite a bit. Also resembles White Fence at times. Thanks for the heads up on this one. Love the song linked in that article.
Lead singer channeling his inner Thom---does he sound like that on all the songs?
