Best albums of 2017 - Playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

Just added Elon Musk is Making Me Sad by the Rentals to my 2017 playlist (see 1st post) if only to capture song title of the year.  Never heard of the Rentals but I kinda like it
The Rentals are Matt Sharp's old band. He was from...

wait for it...

Weezer.

huh... stumbled onto a new album called Milano- by a guy called Daniele Luppi.

Luppi's a film-maker/artist/dance-music producer who previously put out an album with danger mouse (rome) and apparently arranged gnarls barkly's "crazy". on milano, he's working with parquet courts and karen o (the latter singing on 3 tracks which are the most interesting to me). it's decent stuff- worth a listen for parquet courts, who act as the house band here, or karen o/yyy fans.

Ted Leo have something new out?  Don't see anything on Spotify.  Touring at a great venue and will likely check him (+ Pharmacists) out.

It's called The Hanged Man and it's on Spotify but only credited to Ted Leo (no Pharmacists) so you have to find it under that name.

I've mentioned 10yo floppinho does school of Rock here in NYC (doing Zeppelin this term). I've also mentioned the guy who runs it is friends with and had played with Parquet Courts.

This guy picked floppinho and a few other kids to sing on a new Parquet Courts track on their upcoming album!

Just got back from the session. Amazing. Austin (lead singer) was there leading the kids and was very nice (and seemed awkward shy at my appreciation and fandom of their work when I bumrushed him afterwards)... Song was cool too- kinda Brazilian bossa nova vibe to it.

I'll try to post a pic later... I have video with audio but figure that wouldn't be cool until the song is released.

floppinho on skins for zep's communication breakdown at midseason school of rock show.

SoR does these performance classes where they take a bunch of kids of varying ages and abilities (you're supposed to be somewhat capable to get in)- floppinho's done Dave Grohl and ac/dc vs black sabbath so far. the midseason show was shared with two other clases along with zep- pink floyd the wall and "indie-rock". appears the kids who can actually play all signed up for zep... songs from the other two classes were brutal. like- can't keep the beat, tune, melody, key brutal.

why you gotta be infringing on copyrights, yo?

wait... can you not see it? still up for me, but maybe I can as the uploader?

I got a copyright email from youtube, listing all of these- I assume- copyright leeches on there... because of a bunch of kids playing a cover?

here's what they sent me:

Due to a copyright claim, your YouTube video has been blocked in some countries. This means that your video is still up on YouTube, but people in some countries may not be able to watch it.

Video title: NYC School of Rock- Led Zeppelin- Communication Breakdown
Copyrighted content: COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN
Claimed by: ASCAP, KOMCA_CS, APRA_CS, PEDL, Warner Chappell
Blocked countries: United States

thoughts?

Warner Chappell blocked it for me.
It is blocked for me as well...

"This video contains content from Warner Chappell, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."
sorry guys. I guess they have bots that are searching for any mention of anything they have copyrighted... I genuinely didn't think covers counted on youtube. tbh, you're not missing that much- a bunch of kids playing zeppelin including a decent guitar solo off-camera. floppinho didn't have much to do with this song... no fills, no solos, pretty easy beat. should I take this to the lawyer thread?

eta: I took it to the lawyer thread.

So I'm about to jump into full-time Christmas music mode and want to make sure I didn't miss anything big this year. Does anyone want to share some of the albums that are going to make up your top 10ish or so albums? No need to rank them, I'm just looking for something to review.

At this point it's looking like my top twenty will be from the following (in order I added them to my cheat sheet... mostly)

[ ] Japandroids
[ ] Menzingers
[ ] Ron Gallo
[ ] Harley Poe (my AotY)
[ ] White Reaper
[ ] Clowns (I'm actually listening to this one right now)
[ ] Western Addiction
[ ] Meatbodies
[ ] B Boys
[ ] McCafferty
[ ] Royal Blood
[ ] The Districts
[ ] Casual Friday
[ ] Together Pangaea
[ ] Dopamines
[ ] The Bronx
[ ] PtM
[ ] Juiceboxxx (still can't believe I like this)
[ ] Beck
[ ] Direct Hit! / PEARS
[ ] First Blood
[ ] Czarface
[ ] Los Campesinos!
[ ] Cloud Nothings
[ ] Swordfish
[ ] QotSA

IDLES- Brutalism is my top album with a bullet. I still can't get enough of that thing.

will have to look at my own playlist, but a lot of the rest of my top albums are on your list.

top of my head, some that are missing that will definitely be on mine-

LCD Soundsystem

The Courtneys

Priests

WALLS

PIssed Jeans

just looked quickly at my playlist... some others that may be up there:

- The I.L.Y.s

- Downtown Boys

- Protomartyr

- These New South Whales

- Thee Oh Sees

- Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile (this one has grown on me)

Did you listen to Fred Thomas - Changer ? Based on your list, it might be up your alley. His style of singing is a bit Hold Steady-ish which could make or break it for a lot of people, I think.

@Jaysus

The ones above are also in consideration for me.  Just skimming my Spotify saved albums, ones that stood out as also being towards the top for me this year are:

The Courtneys

Deaf Radio

HAIM

JD McPherson

One of the 10 King Gizzard Albums

LCD Soundsystem

Lorde

Low Cut Connie

The Pack A.D.

Phoenix

Run the Jewels

Troubled Horse

I am sure I am missing a bunch too.

Look I don't wanna be un-PC but it doesn't seem like this Pinegrove dude really messed up that bad.
Yeah, without knowing the whole story, it seems he led someone on in the context of a relationship that he was really in to? Still the power imbalance thing but not a one night/rapey/receiving pics from minors case like most of the musicians going down are...

Paste Magazine Top 50 of 2017

5. Kurt Vile/Courtney Barnett

6. Sheer Mag

7. Alvvays

8. LCD Soundsystem

9. Mount Eerie

10. Sampha
really liked that Jay Som one too... pretty sure I mentioned it upthread. haven't really listened to it since I first found it.

I have to be in the right mood for the more chill-out sound, but sampha usually hits the right notes when I am.

NME

http://www.nme.com/list/nmes-albums-of-the-year-2017-2161481

10. Liam Gallagher - As You Were
9. Wiley - Godfather
8. Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life

like with sampha, I have to be in the right mood for Grime... but that new Wiley (grime legend) is pretty tip top.
