About 2 years ago, I bought a laptop and got the Best Buy insurance on it. Before tax, the laptop was $2600 and 3 years of insurance was $500. The insurance covered everything including accidental damage.
Over Christmas, the computer got damaged so I dropped it off to Best Buy's Geek Squad for repair. They determined that they couldn't repair it so they authorized a replacement. The rep told me I'd get $2600 credit. I found the computer that I wanted but it was $2900 so I expected to pay the difference.
While I was completing the transaction, the rep said that he was going to try to get comparable sku approval (or something like that) and that might help me out a bit. He called his manager over and she input her code. The $2600 credit grew to $3000 and I walked out with a $100 gift card in addition to the computer. Unbelievable.
The only bad part about the experience is that Geek Squad stopped offering the same insurance on Apple computers so I will have to find another provider.
