Best Buy: This is why you are going out of business... (1 Viewer)

Took a trip to best buy yesterday with the wife. She wants to get a new computer but wants to go look at them and mess around with them first to see what she wants. So we get there and best buy has a Bundle deal on display for a Lenovo idea pad which she like and met all the minimum spec requirements that she wants, it also comes with a Lenovo tablet in the bundle, total price as advertized is 699. Fast forward about 10 mins of my wife flip-flopping on whether she should buy the computer + tablet bundle; eventually she decides this is a great deal and we track down a sales person and tell them we want to purchase it. This conversation ensues:

Me: Hi my wife wants to buy this bundle.

Sales guy: Ok well let me go check if we have those in stock still; the bundles sell pretty fast we may not have any left in the store.

Me: OK; if you don't have them here can we just have the computer and tablet ordered and shipped to us at this price?

Sales guy: uhh yea you can do that if you want.

Me: OK

(Sales guy goes to computer terminal for 10 mins)

Sales guy: Hey; we don't have any of those left in store, i'm trying to find a way that we can order it for you but our system is not letting me.

(5 more mins of sales guy + now another sales guy on the terminal)

Sales guy: Yea so we cant order that in our system; sorry. We can order you just the computer if you want but it will be at the normal price of 799, because the system wont let us order that bundle.

Me: Do you have the two products in the bundle available in the system?

Sales guy: Yes

Me: Can you have them both shipped to my house?

Sales guy: Yes

Me: So order them both and ship them to us and create a bill of sale at the bundle price.

Sales guy: Well our system wont let us do that.

Me: So let me understand; you have this bundle advertised; you have told me you don't have the products in store; but you can ship them to me, you have the products available in your warehouse stock, to ship to me; but you now cant do that because "the system wont let you"?

Sales guy: uhhhh yea, thats right.

Me: Can I talk to a manager?

(Enter manager)

For the sake of time just re-read the above section again because the manager and I had almost word for word the exact same conversation

After all that:

Me: So basically you guys are advertizing falsely; because you are advertizing a product that you wont deliver at a price that you won't honor.

Manager: Well no; our system wont let us do anything; its the systems fault you see, we advertize displays all the time for products that we are out of.

Me: And you think this is a good business practice?

Manager: No its really bad actually this happens all the time.

Me: OK so who can I talk to about this?

Manager: You have to call this number or go online to talk to corporate about it.

Me: OK; good luck with the whole business model of advertizing products you wont sell to people at prices you wont honor.

Manager: Uhhh OK sorry about that.

Last time I ever (attempt) to give Best Buy my business.

A store manager is prob the wrong guy to discuss changing a corporate entities business model... But I do agree, I've had similar problems at Best Buy.

Call them. They will Bend over backwards to make it right. Four years ago I ordered a $299 bundle on Black Friday. They confirmed and charged my card. Then couldn't ship. Sent me a 700 Asus and a laptop bag instead.

Best Buy sells their warranty for an ipad for $250...

AppleCare costs $99 and is much better.

This feels like a good place for this comment.

Yea i'm sure I will fight that battle Monday; didn't have time yesterday and i'm sure they are shut down today for Easter. I plan on following up though.

Those guys were idiots. Their system can do that. That's how it's set up.
Yes; they were idiots, if i were recording the conversation I would probably have grounds for a false advertizing lawsuit, as they basically verbally admitted to it. Case in point; don't hire idiots...

Not sure a lot of genius level hires are available at those wages, but yeah, a quick crash course in not saying stuff like that would be helpful.

Reminds me of black Friday deals. They advertise some TV for like 1/3 the normal price but only have like 2-3 of them in stock. Their lovely way around false advertising.

I hate dealing with the employees in the store as well. I've become partial to ordering online for in-store pickup lately.

why not just have amazon ship it straight to your house for cheaper with better customer service???
I sometimes do that too. Not mutually exclusive.
for me it is...

one company runs scams like in the OP and treats customers like garbage. the other company bends over backwards to make sure the customer is happy, on top of delivering right to your doorstep at (usually) a better price. i'll spend my money exclusively at the second company.

i prefer supporting local business. I have never had an issue and shop Best Buy and Amazon all the time. If I can get a product at almost the same price from Best Buy or another local retailer I will shop local first.

I just bought a new router this weekend. Best Buy Price was $199 and Amazon was $192 so I grabbed it at Best Buy.

Always surprised when I drive by one, similar to Blockbuster before they finally went #### up.
I'm baffled by how this place is still in business. Horrible everything.

I can't wait for their going out of business sale. Everything will be marked 40% off and still more expensive than Amazon

glllllllllllll

op> don't bother calling the customer service line listed on their website.

i did that. after a half dozen or so attempts i was told that the reps "don't have managers or supervisors.. aren't in any way connected to Best Buy corporate... can't transfer calls" and that calling the line is "more or less a giant circle". you won't get any answers. at all.

took me a while to track down some corporate type personal emails. fired off a long, angry screed to them. eventually someone replied to me with the entire chain attached.

took that guy weeks to send me a refund on ##### service.

and i only got action from that guy after complaining about it to a FBG who works there.

Looks like you ran into idiots who don't know how to go off script.

If the deal is worth it I'd just try another Best Buy. I'm sure there's one 5 miles down the road.

But, yeah, unless I need something TODAY I'm getting it on Amazon every time. Used to go to BB all the time, probably been there twice in the last 3 years.

Probably should have just gone online and ordered the bundle yourself from their website or called the 800 number and ordered it that way. By waiting until Monday the sale is now over and you are going to be SOL.

The last time I was in Best Buy, I bought a Wii for the family. That was about 2 years ago, but I seem to remember their prices weren't great. Other than that, I don't really have any complaints.

I went to Best Buy back in February to buy a new TV. Found the one I wanted, but before I went to someone to tell them I wanted it, I did a quick price check on Amazon. Found the same TV for about $100 cheaper on Amazon. Found a BB worker and told her I wanted this TV, but I found it on Amazon and could they price match, she said sure. So I point her out the TV and she said says, "sorry we don't have that one in stock and we don't have any we can ship and I don't think we'll be getting anymore of those in." So why exactly are you advertising a TV in your store that you don't have in stock and can't ship anywhere? Needless to say, I bought the TV from Amazon.

Bad customer service isn't why Best Buy is struggling big time. It's the competition from the big box stores (Wal-Mart, Costco, etc.) that can undercut Best Buy's prices. Same is happening for lots of specialty retailers.
