Best cell phone service for the money these days?? (1 Viewer)

I have been using verizon for a while.  Great phone/internet service on the smart phones, but expensive.

What is the best cell phone service for the money these days that includes unlimited calling, text, and at least SOME data plan.  We don't download anything and just use email and GPS mostly when out and about, so probably just a couple gigs total per month.

And of course, how much do you pay?  My wife and I have phones, not sure if we will get our 12 year old daughter a phone soon or not.

have you looked into changing your Verizon plan I upgraded my plan a little while back and I have 3 smartphones and a tablet and I paid like a hundred and thirty-five a month now

Happy using Ting. Three smartphones and total bill each month is less than $50. We rarely use data as all three of us have wifi available home and at work.

Jeez we spend a lot of money on cell phones.  Most of us with families spend like $1,500 per year.  This bill was $0 not that long ago.

Look on this thread. (Hulk) does a nice job with suggestions for services.

Before you do switch, make sure you have decent service in your area. I switched a couple years ago to T-Mobile and had horrible service in and around my home, and places I traveled to often. I had to switch away. They have bumped up their service, and this was before T-Mobile started allowing calls over wifi, so they would be better now. Just saying you need to check.

For a point reference, I have two smartphones with Verizon lines and I'm paying $95 month. Only includes 3GB of data. I've got my daughter capped at 2.5 GB (or about two weeks worth), which leaves me with more than enough with 500M.

I don't plan to leave Verizon, cause it would tick me off immensely to switch providers and begin fighting with network shortcomings. Still, Verizon needs to cough up another GB or 2 of data to keep my eyes from prying (and they need to quit charging me $5 a month for the ability to cap my daughter's data usage).

currently on VZW with two phones. 6 GB data. got new phones through them when we switched over. total is $171/month. we're off contract in Dec and definitely looking to save the money on plans.

Since nobody else has suggested it, I have Google Fi and it has cost me on average about 30 bucks a month. The majority of my phone calls are now made on wifi so there is no issues with dead/weak spots on my office, home, or other places I frequent. The data has been just okay, but the cell reception has been nearly equal to Verizon.

As a base price Google charges 20 bucks for unlimited talk and text, plus 10 bucks for every GB you use. If you end up using .5 GB in a month, your phone will cost you 25 dollars total plus taxes (around 2 dollars in my case). The downside is you only have a choice of 3 Google Nexus phones, but they are all well reviewed and cheaper than your standard Galaxys and iPhones with similar features/power.

What if you only have wifi at home?

I'm thinking of giving Google Fi a shot when the new phones come out in September.   That is about the time my Verizon contract ends.  I hear they are having HTC make the next versions.  Heuwei will also make one.

The service runs off of T-Mobile and Sprint towers. I've seen no issues in the Denver metro area with service and it's been a little more reliable in the mountains than either my old Verizon or my wife's ATT.

Ting.  Two phones, both use very few talk minutes, lots of texts, one uses a lot of data for an adult, and never had a bill over $65.

Wish I had other options, but if I didn't use Verizon, I'd end up spending more on replacing phones that I'd throw against the wall.

At least I'm still on an old unlimited data plan.  Wife and daughter, not so much.

Republic Wireless

Tried four other carriers over the years, RW is by far the best.  No complaints, we spend way, way less compared to some of the amounts being thrown around in here.

PagePlus on the Verizon network.  My GF has the unlimited plan for about $52/mo.  I have the 1200min/1GB for ~$28/mo.  Highly recommended if you want to retain the Verizon coverage.

yes, I just did this a few weeks back and lowered my bill by about 40 bucks.  I still think I pay too much for what I need though.

This is what I have/need/want:

My android smart phone, My wife's android smart phone.  Unlimited talk and text.  A few gigs of a data plan (wifi is available for us most of the time but it's nice to have a few gigs, maybe 3 or 4 total).  Also my mom's phone is linked to our account, but it is not a smart phone.

We pay around $150 for all three.

What company offers this for less, and how much less.

Ready.................go!!

Have never (never) owned a cellphone and don't understand why people have them.  I've never sent a text. I get crap from friends and family and then when we go out they can't look away from the thing and tell me about some dumb picture someone just posted. Don't get it at all.  Plus you have to carry it around.  I don't even own a wallet. I like freedom and simplicity.  Oh and it looks like it causes cancer. Maybe I'm the sane one.

Also remember that if you go with Verizon, you are stuck with them mostly. The nature of their wireless system is different than AT&T and others. There are some that use the same system as Verizon, but not as many as AT&T, and many of the other, smaller companies that people have listed here.

Another thing to check is whether the speed of your data gets 'capped' after a certain amount. That can be a PITA.

Again this is all info in the (Hulk) thread.

I currently have Verizon, been with them for about 6 years now. It's just me on my plan (wife is still under her mom's). For 3GB of data and unlimited calls/text I pay $76/month. And an additional $22/month for my iPhone.

If you want to keep Verizon coverage albeit the prepaid coverage, consider:

Selectel Wireless $30 a month plan for you:  http://www.selectelwireless.com/product-category/plans/

You can roam for calling and text, but data will not work in roaming areas with 3G -- don't know about data working with LTE/4G.  My daughter uses it in the middle of the northern Missouri roam area with an iphone 4s.  If you go with Selectel, I like purchasing through:  http://www.batmobilewireless.com/?main_page=page&id=5 They have always treated me well and can sort out any issues and have autopay set up for you.  I have my preteen/early teen boys and my parents on the $75 a year plan to really restrict data or in the case of my parents, they do not use it.

I use Ecomobile in metro STL with a 5s for me as I need more data (about 2 GB per month):  https://www.ecomobile.com/

and the $35 a month plan with 3000 points.  You might have to call to switch, but I like it quite a bit.  They said I would be fine in roaming for all three, but I'm going to test out the roaming area in northern Missouri this summer to see what it can do.

I hear you Willie, I don't like having one and I don't Face/Insta/Vine or none of that stuff. I do like having access to the internet or getting information when I am out and not dining with friends. If you work in corporate America almost impossible to not have one.

I use the phone for everything so my bill would actually be more than what I pay with T-Mobile. I'm kind of shocked they still do a pay per certain amount of minutes and text, mine is unlimited for about $50 a month thru T-Mobile.

Amen.  I also proudly ride my bike to work every day.  It serves two purposes really, gives me a great workout and saves $$$ for my retirement.  I laugh at all the money everyone is spending on cars.

Another  google fi person.

20/line for unlimited talk/text then $10 per GB data not rounded at all.

So 90 for 3GB or 100 for 4GB

1st month I used <1 GB 2nd month just <2
