Best games of this decade? (1 Viewer)

I wasn't sure whether to include playoff games form the 1999 season or not (they were played in 2000), but I did anyway since there were a couple of great ones. Games are not in any order....

7. Patriots vs Raiders, 2001 playoffs...... Everyone knows about this one....controversial, with a tight game in some terrible weather, with Vinatieri playing Superman. "The Snow Bowl" jump started the Patriot dynasty just as the "The Immaculate Reception" and "The Catch" jump started the Steelers and 9'ers dynasties.

Patriots 16, Raiders 13

6. Super Bowl XXXVI, Patriots vs Rams..........A great game and a great story. It was David vs Goliath. The Rams were a truly dominant football team in every sense of the word, and the Patriots were a huge underdog and not nearly as great as the Rams, but they were playing just as great as them in the playoffs.

Patriots 20, Rams 17

5. Rams vs Panthers, 2003 playoffs..........One of the longest games in NFL history, that had as many twists and turns and as exciting a game as you could imagine. Ended on a perfectly thrown ball by Delhomme in 2 OT. Panthers 29, Rams 23

4. Super Bowl XXXVIII, Patriots vs Panthers 2004......Nothing really needs to be said except the obvious...the game had absolutely everything. They were 2 quarters where the teams played each other tough and equal with hard-nosed, physical football. There were 2 quarters where they both exploded on offense. The game was a battle of wills versus the 2 mentally strongest teams in the NFL.\

Patriots 32, Panthers 29

3. "The Tackle", Steelers vs Colts 2006 playoffs........The Colts were considered to be possibly one of the best NFL teams in history when the playoffs began. Few others could match their 13-0 start, and they dominated in every phase of the game, even on defense at many different points during the year. An underdog, 6th seeded team came in and shocked them before the Colts took advantage of controversy and re-gained their focus to come within 3 points. I'm sure I don't even need to explain about the final couple minutes of the game.

Steelers 21, Colts 18

2. "Music City Miracle", Bills vs Titans 2000 (99' playoffs)............a well-fought game that would've been considered a very good game even had the Bills won it, but the fact that the Titans pulled out an improbable victory made it even more amazing.

Titans 22, Bills 16

1. Super Bowl XXXIV, Rams vs Titans 2000 (99' playoffs)..............everything that the Super Bowl should be. The two best teams in the league without any question, playing an absolutely spectacular game that comes down to the final seconds, with amazing plays on both sides of the ball in between, and teams making comebacks mid-game (Titans tying it after being down 16-0), and the Rams coming right back and halting the comeback with the dynamic 70+ yard pass to Bruce.

Rams 23, Titans 16

These were the best ones IMO that stuck out in my mind first. Any more to add?

I like all of the other games mentioned too, I'll write up a summary for them later (or if you want to you could to) and put them up. I also forgot about Green Bay @ Philly.....and 4th and 26. That definetly needs to be on the list.

I said it at the time and I'll stick by my belief that this was not a great game. People say it was a great game because it lasted so long. Other than that, what else was there? It was a game with 11 FGA and 8 FGM with only four TDs. It was a game where the Rams, at home, made no effort to win the game in regulation. It was a game of missed opportunities. Was the end exciting? Yes. Was the game, as a whole, exciting? Not really.

The Pats-Broncos Monday night game from (I believe) 2004 deserves consideration.
Not before the Instant Classic - Miracle At the Meadowlands Jets Vs Miami.
The Miracle at the Meadowlands took place between the Giants and Eagles in 1978, my friend.

Very underrated game is the first one the Titans ever lost at Adelphia Coliseum.

2000 Ravens find themselves resurgent under Trent Dilfer and come to play a 9-1 Tennessee team that is clearly the class of the NFL. After a back-and-forth game, Boulware sacks McNair late in the fourth quarter and forces a fumble deep in Titans territory with the game tied at 17.

But instead of a go-ahead score, Dilfer throws an INT returned for a TD -- followed by a missed Del Greco extra point. Dilfer hits a long pass to Shannon Sharpe to march Baltimore down the field, then connects a short TD pass with under a minute remaining to take a 24-23 lead.

McNair leads a desperate last drive to get the Titans in long FG range, but Del Greco misses again at the gun as the Ravens win 24-23. Titans have lost at Adelphia for the first time, and the Ravens serve notice to the NFL. Then come back to Adelphia two months later and do it again -- again with the help of ADG.

How about that Colts/Bucs MNF game from '03? That amazing 4th quarter comeback by Indy to send the game to OT where they won with a FG.

True Dat - They call this one 'THE MONDAY NIGHT MIRACLE"I stand corrected but, my premise was dead on accurate, buddy.

Monday Night Miracle

MNF's Greatest Games: Miami-New York Jets 2000

By Mike Diegnan

ABC Sports Online

On Nov. 11, the Raiders and Broncos played in the 500th regular season telecast of Monday Night Football. To celebrate, we asked fans to vote for their favorite MNF game. They selected the Jets' comeback over the Dolphins in 2000.

It all depends on where you are from how you felt about it.

In New York, the headlines blared "Monday Night Miracle Men!"

Down south, the Palm Beach Post called it a "Monday Meltdown".

Vinny Testaverde could barely buy a first down for much of of the game.

For three quarters, though, the headline workers were trying to figure out how best to illustrate how bad the New York Jets were against the Dolphins in a battle of 5-1 teams. Most of them would have had references to the swamps of New Jersey. Vinny Testaverde had been picked off three times, Curtis Martin was a non-factor, their defense couldn't stop the Dolphins.

For the Dolphins, Jay Fielder couldn't have asked for a better outing. The former star at Oceanside (N.Y.) High School had doled out nearly 80 tickets to family and friends as he made his first start ever at the Meadowlands. It was good times for the local boy.

In fact, when Lamar Smith scored with 12 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Dolphins a 30-7 lead, Fiedler walked over to Jason Taylor and told him the game was over. Little did Fielder know that Taylor was being miked by Monday Night Football. Or that he just jinxed his team.

"It was all Fiedler's fault," jokes Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas.

"It was a situation, where we were ahead by a lot, things were going very well for us and I wanted it to stay that way," Fiedler says.

Either way, with the crowd filing out, there were few who thought the Jets had a chance to come back.

"It was like a high school game out there," recalls Thomas. "I mean there was no one in the stands, and we really felt we had it won."

But then Vinny Testaverde hit Laveranues Coles with a 30-yard touchdown early in the fourth. It set in motion a wild quarter for Vinny. Four minutes later, he connected with Jermaine Wiggins on a 1-yard score, and it was a 10-point game. A John Hall field goal with 5:43 to go cut it to 30-23, and all of a sudden, fans started filing back into the stadium.

"We just tried to say hey, let's don't lose our poise. But it was hard not to," Thomas says. "Because the crowd started coming back into the game. It was wild. I've never seen (anything like) it. I guess they even opened the gates up for the people to come back in because usually when you leave, you can't get back in, but I've never seen within like five minutes left in the fourth quarter to fill back up. I guess everybody started leaving the game at the end of the third, and then they started hearing about it, everybody started rushing back, and by the time it was overtime, I mean it was packed."

The fans got back in time to see Testeraverde hit Wayne Chrebet with a 24-yard touchdown with 3:55 to go to tie the game.

"They booed us, they booed us, and then they booed us, and then they left," recalls Coles. "And then we started coming back, and then you seeing people filter in back into the stands, and I think with just half the stadium empty, that's probably about the loudest I ever heard it. I mean it was very exciting. There was so much energy in the stadium for the guys."

Two plays later, though, you could hear a pin drop, when Fiedler found Leslie Shepherd open down the right sideline for a 46-yard touchdown to put Miami on top once again.

Jumbo Elliott's first career touchdown catch was a huge one.

Testaverde went back to work from there, marching the Jets down the field again. The biggest play came on a fourth-and-1 from the Miami 4, when Testaverde hit Richie Anderson for a two-yard pickup. Two plays later, the Jets used a play they worked on in practice, but one that few expected would be called in a game situation, let alone one as critical as this: A pass to tackle eligible Jumbo Elliott.

"We were all on the sidelines like, 'Oh come on Jumbo, catch it,'" recalls Coles. "When he bobbled it, we were like 'Oh man.'"

Elliott found his way into the end zone wide-open. Testaverde lofted it to him, but a falling Elliott bobbled it before cradling it in to tie the game at 37-37 with 42 seconds left.

"But he caught it and then we looked at his face on the jumbo screen," says Coles. "His eyes were just wide open, and I think all the guys were like 'Jumbo, did you catch it?' And he was like 'Yeah.' So for us, it was very exciting, I mean, we just kept asking you caught it, right? You caught it, right? I think he was ignoring everybody. So I mean it was a big play for us, and we had worked on it and it came through for us in the end."

In overtime, the Dolphins still had a crack at winning the game, but the Jets would not be denied as Marcus Coleman picked off Fiedler to set up Hall's game-winning 40-yard field goal.

"I remember putting my arm around either Wayne or Dedrick (Ward) and just jumping up and down like a kid," says Coles. "And I was like 'We did it, we did it.' I was so excited. It was big. I was a rookie, and everything just was happening so fast, and for us to come out and get a victory like that on Monday night, I mean it was very exciting."

Olindo Mare and the Dolphins were dejected after the 40-37 loss.

For Testaverde, the game proved that this was his team. In the fourth quarter alone, the former Heisman Trophy winner was 18-of-26 for 235 yards and four TDs.

"He just took the game totally over and just made play after play," recalls Coles. "Him and Wayne was in the hole, drawing plays in the dirt. I had never seen that done in a professional game, and Vinny was just, he was just on. It's almost like he was a general. We were his soldiers, and he was directing, and just everything was clicking for him."

The Jets and Dolphins have played many memorable games, but the "Miracle at the Meadowlands" is one that will be fresh in the minds of many for years to come.

"It made me sick, because they are a rivalry of ours, and to live down here with all these New Yorkers, I mean, they remind you everywhere you go, and they definitely remind us when we came back home," Thomas says. "I mean you go out to a restaurant, they're chanting J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS! but for them to come back on us, and we had the game on a lock, and for one person to beat us and Jumbo Elliot catching the ball, that just topped everything, and it just made me sick."

This is the first and only playoff game i have ever FALLEN ASLEEP during.Although I think it's basically because I was really really tired.

All I remember is falling asleep close to halftime, waking up seemingly forever after that and the game was still on.

The OTs were exciting though.

3. "The Tackle", Steelers vs Colts 2006 playoffs........
A great victory/upset for PIT, but not a "great game." Likewise the Colts/Bucs MNF game. Amazing comeback, but not a great game.To me a great game is one that is well-played throughout by both teams. Colts did not play well for much of the first OR second game, and Bucs weren't exactly stellar in latter part of that 2d one. A good list though, overall.

49ers vs Giants in the 2002 playoffs is the most dramatic game I can remember seeing. 49ers coming back and Giants snapper botching the snap for the potential game winner with 6 seconds left.

What about the Sunday night meltdown 2 seasons ago between the Seahawks and the Rams. The Rams made a ridiculous come back in a game that many thought was over.

"The Snow Bowl" jump started the Patriot dynasty just as the "The Immaculate Reception" and "The Catch" jump started the Steelers and 9'ers dynasties.

Is it really called the "The Snow Bowl"?

Naw...I liked the 42-0 beating the Hawks gave your Eagles on MNF

It depends on what exactly you're referring to when you say decade. Is it 10 years from today's date, or just the twenty-aughts?

I always thought "The Tackle" was Super Bowl XXXIV and Mike Jones tackle on the last play of the game. At least that's what they call it hear in Saint Louis.

I'd vote for the game where the Saints had that incredible return for TD, then Carney missed the PAT.

2000 Bucs v Rams.

Warrick Dunn has 200 yards and 3 TDs.

Faulk scores 4 TDs.

Holt has 165 yards and 1 TD.

Keyshawn has 120 yards and 2 TDs.

Dunn runs for 50 yd TD on the last play of the 3rd.

Holt answers with a 72 yd TD in the 4th.

Then Faulk scores from 10 to take the lead.

The crazy pitch by Dunn back to Shaun King, who runs for 20 yards.

Then King runs for 15 on a 4th and 9.

Finally, Dunn scores from 1 yard out with 1:30 left to win and put the Bucs in the playoffs.

:wall: Get someone to explain THIS DECADE to you. A teacher, maybe.

Funny story:Our Super Bowl was that week. That was a MNF game. My entire fantasy league tailgates together at Buc games. One guy was in the lead by 35 points heading into the game, with the other guy only having Faulk left.

The guy in the lead shows up wearing a hat he bought at the mall at one of those personalization kiosks saying "2000 NFFL Fantasy Champ".

Needless to say, Faulk scores 39 points...I'm sitting between both guys at the game...and we have a memory (and a souvenir) to last a lifetime!!

I see what you're saying, but I kind of disagree with what your definition of a "great game" is. A game well-played throughout by both teams that comes down to the wire is indeed a great game, but to me a fantastic football game is not just a very well-played one by both teams......it comes down to quality of play, emotion of the players, importance of the game itself, shocking moments, high anxiety/emotion wondering who's going to win, and comebacks in the middle of games are great too. To me a great game is a mixture of all that. The Colts/Steelers one was a greater game IMO than Colts/Bucs not only because of the quality of play, but because of the shocking moments (Bettis' fumble) the unbelievable plays (Vanderjagt missing, Dallas Clark's 50 yard TD, the Polamalu INT reversal, Ben's tackle) and also just because it was so shocking to see this 6 seed come in and take it to a team considered possibly among the best ever.

That game will be remembered, IMO, just as much as people remmeber the 1998 Vikings losing to the unheralded Falcons, spoiling the "Greatest Offense Ever"'s chance at Super Bowl glory.

How about that Colts/Bucs MNF game from '03? That amazing 4th quarter comeback by Indy to send the game to OT where they won with a FG.
Even if I grow old and senile, I doubt that I will ever forget this game. Unbelievable.

Colts/Packers, 2004. Probably the first and last time that Manning and Favre will ever take the field against each other. One of the few games that actually lived up to the pregame hype. Both quarterbacks played truly masterful games, marching their teams up and down the field and carrying their teams on their shoulders. The two went a combined 58 of 88 (66%) for 753 (8.56 per), with 9 TDs and *0* Interceptions. The best display of quarterbacking I have ever seen in a single game.

For the more defense-minded, Rams/Ravens, 2003 was without question, without hesitation, the single most masterful defensive performance I have ever seen. I know, it sounds counterintuitive of a game where both teams combined for 55 points (33-22) to be described as a defensive symphony, but consider the following:

St. Louis won because they scored 33 points... *ON 157 TOTAL YARDS OF OFFENSE*!!! How was this possible? Their defense got 6 turnovers (including one defensive TD), and St. Louis started drives on the Baltimore 36, the Baltimore 1, and the Baltimore 35 (twice). Baltimore's defense did a masterful job holding up against the onslaught, but there was just nothing they could do because St. Louis's defense kept on getting turnovers. At one point in the game, Marshall Faulk had 4 carries for -1 yard and 2 TDs- a line that would have made Jerome Bettis himself cry.

This is always the example I use when I try to explain that field position is fluid. Giving your team a better defense will increase the number of points you score (since your offense will always have better field position), and giving your team a better offense will decrease the points you allow (since your defense will always have a longer field to defend). Regardless, it was a beautiful game with two juggernaut defenses making mincemeat of two pathetic offenses and carrying the entire team on their shoulders. It was almost sad that one team had to wind up losing.

That's always my definition of what makes a truly great game- when I hate the fact that one team has to lose... then THAT is a great game.

What about he Lions/Bears game where Marty took the Wind?

that's a classic
Hey guys, let's make fun of the time that Mike Shanahan won the toss in Overtime against Buffalo in 1998 and took the wind, and his defense got a stop and his offense marched down the field to score the winning TD. That was a classic game, too. Boy, Mike Shanahan must sure be an idiot, no wonder the Denver Broncos don't have the highest winning percentage in the entire league since Shanahan became their coach. Oh wait, they do.Marty Morninwheg was not the first coach to ever take the wind in overtime (actually, neither was Shanahan- iirc, he was the second). We don't make fun of the other coaches who did it, so let's stop making fun of Marty for doing it, too. If it had worked, nobody would have ever said another word about the gamble. Let's face it- the Lions sucked back then, and were likely to lose either way.

If Bellichick's intentional safety had failed, would you be making fun of him right now, too?

Yeah, same here. <_<

In 2003 the two best teams were the Pats and the Colts. With homefield and a snowstorm the Pats disposed of the Colts in the playoffs. But during the regular season, these teams played in one of the most exciting games I have ever watched.

1st Quarter - New England jumps on top 10-0. At this point it looks like a blowout in the making.

2nd Quarter - New England extends its lead to 17-0, then the Colts rattle off 10 straight points including a touchdown pass from Manning to Pollard with 2 seconds left in the half. Amazingly, Bethel Johnson returns the kickoff for a touchdown with no time left. 24-10

3rd Quarter - The Patriots start to drive the nail in the proverbial coffin with Mike Cloud's touchdown in the 2nd half. But the Colts refused to lay down. Tom Brady throws interceptions on consecutive drives. Indy scores 2 touchdowns before the end of the 3rd. 31-24

4th Quarter - The Colts and Peyton Manning score on their third consecutive drive and tie the game at 31. Bethel Johnson comes up big again with a 67 yard return. Brady makes quick work of the Colts D. The Pats go up 38-31 on Deion Branch's touchdown.

The Patriots stop the Colts at midfield on their next drive, but the Hunter Smith pins New England inside the 10 yard line. On 3rd down Kevin Faulk fumbles and the defense recovers. The Pats defense tightens up at the goal and forces 3 incomplete passes by Manning. Vanderjagt kicks a field goal. 38-34

New England's next series goes just the way Indy wants it. They get the ball back at midfield with 3 minutes left down by 4. Indy marches down the field to the 2 yard line. After 2 runs by Edgerrin James and an incomplete pass it is 4 down. On the previous play Willie McGinest had to sit on the sideline because he was hurt and exhausted. But on the final play of this drive he returned to stop James inches short of the goalline.

Final Score 38-31

As much as I hate to say it, Washington @ Tampa Bay in the regular season last season was a great game. 36-35. A ton of action in the second half. TB going for two for the win with under a minute remaining.

I enjoyed the playoff rematch more simply because I liked the result better, but that regular season game last year was top notch.

I would have to say the Vikings-Packers game in 2000. Great game (although I hated the result) that should have ended with a FG at the end of regulation but Berger bobbled the snap and they never got the kick away, instead ended with Freeman's amazing catch at the end of OT.

Vikings cut Chris Dishman a couple weeks later and were never the same after he left (worst move in the green era, IMO).

Hated the result, but the game was a classic, plus in a rivalry, it makes it that much better.

of course most will remember a week 16 game here :hey: there are a lot of owners that won or lost super bowls based on that monday night game. i sat between two owners who had the lead switch 3 or 4 times during that game alone (keyshawn and a slight lead owner vs. faulk owner who eventually won)

Good list, I think the Rams/Panthers game from '03 should be higher though, top 3 at least and possibly #1. I remember when I was watching that game I just couldn't believe my eyes...it looked to be basically over so many times, and then it finally ended clear out of the blue. The top two seem to both be relying on one play and the fact that it was the Super Bowl for #1, though I can certainly respect that.

Good call. I was at ESPN Zone in NY for this game too, which made it all the more fun.

Is it really called the "The Snow Bowl"?
Looks like it...http://www.puresportsart.com/warehouse/vinatieri02pf.htm

(I was at the second game, but I've never called it that)
Someone needs to come up with better names.
 I was there, and trust me when I say it the name is perfect. Forever one of the best nights in Boston sports history.

I was just about to post this game. It stands out in my mind since I started both Dunn and Faulk that week. :excited:
I wnet against a guy that had Faulk and Dunn in that week. :wall: I called him about midway through the 4th quarter saying "Mercy! I give up!".

We still laugh about it to this day. :D

Funnier Story here - I was in a Tight Rostered league and one of the teams dropped Warrick Dunn a few weeks earlier...... :excited: I picked him up and I kicked this owners ### with his own player

Same situation, he had a huge lead on me and pretty much declared the season His....

Great stuff of FF you'll never forget or forget to rub in.

I don't know about Best game - But, that has to be right up there with one of if not The best Fantasy Performance in clutch time by Warrick Dunn.
