Cornell, Vedder, and Staley are all top notch. Between those three, it's personal preference. Vedder sounds the best live, by a large margin. Staley was hit and miss on stage and Cornell can't hit the notes he used to.

In any event, Cobain is nowhere near the rest. His voice was great for Nirvana, but as a singer, he's not in the same area code.

I'm heavily biased as a Pearl Jam freak so I vote Ed, but Chris Cornell is amazing as well, and criminally underrated. His solo shows are some of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Chris has the best voice.... I put him first. That being said Layne's was my favorite and I voted him second even though Eddie is probably a better singer. Kurt succeeded with his lyrics, the raspiness was obviously a signature but I don't think he holds a candle to Eddie and Chris.

Kurts voice was unique but not good. Eddie is like the modern Bob Dylan. Layne had the best actual singing voice and Chris had the best range but he didnt hold up well.

Layne hands down.

Layne sounded great on the Mad Season concert I watched last week too. But I also heard him sound off on more than one occasion. Cornell used to be awesome live but the last few shows of theirs I saw, he couldn't get anywhere near a lot of the notes he used to crush. Vedder is still terrific live.

I think Kurt and Ed are unique voices and great. But the other two belt it out.
Check out PJ covering "Love Reign O'er Me" at the VH1 Rock Honors for The Who. Punch that into YouTube. Not only does Ed belt it out, it's maybe the best (original arrangement) cover of a song I've ever heard.

Yeah, it's all personal preference. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE both Staley and Cornell. I just think Vedder is a much more consistent live performer.

I have a soft spot for Cornell as he was the one who first told me OJ Simpson was on the run in a white Bronco. I thought he was BSing me until I got home and saw it on TV. No joke.

PJ has been my favorite band since 1992 when you play with Blues travelers Soundgarden and neil young in Toronto . Got pulled out of the pit 5 songs into PJ set. Lost both my shoes.

This. Exactly.

Maybe I caught Cornell on good nights but I saw Soundgarden on their last 2 tours and was blown away with how well his voice has held up. He nailed everything.

I think Staley probably had the best balance of unique voice and great range among the 4.

Yep. What's amazing about Vedder is he's pushing 50 and his voice is only getting better. The way his voice fills an arena is unmatched in anyone else I've seen. Especially now with the acoustic sets PJ does as their first encore. Gives me chills just thinking about it.

Steve Perry from Journey? He's who I always considered to have the best voice....by a long shot.

Thanks for playing. Your contributions are appreciated.
Thanks smartass but when you drop the ball, you need to be called on it.
This is true. Journey was one of the pioneers of Grunge in the 90's. Their omission is glaring.
Way off topic, but ya wanna know how much Steve Smith was paid after leaving Ronnie Montrose to join Journey? $350.00 a week, which was 50 dollars less a week than what he was making with Ronnie Montrose.
