Our daughter (13) is overdue for a phone. The thing is, both my wife's phone and mine are paid for by our work so it's not as simple as adding a new phone to a family shared plan.

Any advice?

We prefer the Apple platform. 

We want to be able to track her phone.

My 14 year old has an iphone 6S.  I replace the screen every 6 months between her dropping it or watching Netflix in the shower.

Maybe look into getting her an older model and set up an account on Ting or one of the other pay for what you use providers?  That way she can prove responsibility and you're not locked into a contract 

I know Comcast / Xfinity is starting to offer Mobile as well to existing Internet customers

Iphone SE. smaller form, iphone 6 guts. My now 14 y.o. Son has had his almost 2 years. Rumors are a new version is coming in the spring (the first release was spring of 2016). $300 orunder, depending where you buy it.

The issue with Xfinity and their cell phone service is the fact that you have to buy a new phone from them to get the service.

My 14yr old daughter has an iphone 6S.  My 12yr old son is getting an iphone 6 for xmas.  The kids like the iphone for FaceTime and such.  But it has enough to do what the kids do with texting and what not.  As far as costs, we got the 6S for free when I bought my wife's phone, and then we stumbled onto a new 6 that was free when my sister in law didn't need it.
