Best Position to Draft (1 Viewer)

About to start a 16team dynasty league with members all carried over from a redraft last year. As I won the league I get to pick where I want to draft. I really can't decide and was just looking for some advice to help me draft the best team.

I was hoping to draft Aaron Rodgers but don't really know what spot I'd need to go in to get him (I thought around 5). Only problem with that is i'd be waiting till 27 to get anyone else. going 13-16 is also tempting.

Anyone got previous experience or insight?

Thanks

I would take the first spot. You can usually trade down a few spots if you want to (possibly multiple times) and move up in other rounds. Basically the same result as a middle of the round pick, but with better picks later. Do not do even swaps of positions (aka the 1.01 and 2.16 for the 1.04 and the 2.13). Get something extra because the drop in round 1 is quite a bit more significant than the gain in round 2. A personal strategy I like in a startup is to trade down to the bottom of my tiers, do it a few times, acquire extra picks (or move up in later rounds), then use those picks as ammo if you want a specific player later in the draft. That is part of why I would take the top pick in round 1. An example...say your top tier of RBs is CJ3, Peterson, MJD and Rice. This is just dropping names to make a point. If you value them relatively close, you can trade back to the 1.04, maybe move up 3 spots in round 2, and get something additional in the deal. That something additional (plus the moveup in round 2) is value...assuming your tier is relatively even. This example assumes the 4 RBs (or whatever players are in your tier) are in the same tier and close in value.

 Sound strategy there. What are your roster requirements and scoring?

Thanks and an interesting idea. Might look into that. If trades were not an option and you had one position in a snake draft where would you pick?

1qb2rb2wr1te1flex(rb,wr or te)1pk1team dnon ppr, standard scoring.

The big drop in PPR dynasty startups is at #5 - everyone agrees that CJ/AD/MJD/Rice are uberstuds with at least 3 more prime years ahead of them, after that you have to turn to QB, WR, or older, less excellent backs. So if you don't really have a preference among those 4, #4 is the answer. If you like two of them equally, but not the other two, then #2, etc, etc.

#2 in ppr (for a shot at Rice or CJ). #4 in non ppr. I like ADP and MJD better than Rice or CJ but that's offset by the mileage on their treads.

You say its non ppr and 16 team league. Non-ppr means WRs take a back seat. Had it been PPR, with 16 teams, I would have highly recommended taking a WR in the first rd.

But in non-ppr with that many teams, the top QBs become much more valuable. One, you want a sure starter, and there's not enough for everyone; two, in non-ppr the Qb pts is a much larger % of your teams overall score each week. I'd take the best QB available in the 2nd round.

I trend away from taking RB early in most dynasty leagues, mainly because its the easiest postion to improve through the draft. But with 16 teams, non-ppr, start 2, that's a really high premium placed on that position, so you must take one in the either the 1st or 2nd round.

Excellent advice, thanks alot.

I had the 7th in a start up 12 team dynasty .5 ppr.. I traded out of the first all together and it has worked out very well IMO..

I gave 1:7 and 4:6 for 2:8, 3:5, and 6:8 ..Im going to post the draft in the start up dynast thread soon
