Best rock album of the past 20 years? (1 Viewer)

Great album. :)

For me the answer to your question is between Is This It? vs. OK Computer.

ETA: The Meadowlands also in the running for me.

where does Celebration Rock by the Japandroids rank?
Very very high on my unofficial ballot. Everything is so subjective but in addition to some of what has already been mentioned I'd throw these into consideration for my personal best.

Funeral by Arcade Fire

Lonerism by Tame Impala

Is This It? by The Strokes

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys

Sunbather by Deafheaven (flame away)

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco

Weezer Blue, O.K. Computer, Arcade Fire-Funeral are my nominations. The Suburbs and Kid A. are underrated greats.

Great list except for the Tame Impala.

Know this isn't "the best in the past 20 years," but Trainwreck by Boys Night Out is really superb (personal favorite). One of those you have to listen from beginning to end. It's a perfect listen under, ahem, certain conditions.

Great list especially Tame Impala.

My personal favorite is Contraband by Velvet Revolver. Damn shame Weiland couldn't hold it together to keep that band together.

It's weird to say that an album that took home a grammy is underrated but I definitely agree. Sprawl II is one of my favorite songs of the past few years.

Also, while one these might not be the best of the past couple of decades you'd get no trouble from me if you argued that Lift Your Skinny Fists to Heaven or Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! by Godspeed You! Black Emperor belonged in the conversation of someone's personal favorites.

My nominees would be:

Radiohead - The Bends

Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

McLusky - McLusky Do Dallas

Arcade Fire - Funeral

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

Probably not greatest but Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf is one of my favs.

Yea yea yeas - Fever to Tell also solid.

No Code for me.
Something by Pearl Jam?
Love to see Pearl Jam support. No Code is probably my favorite Pearl Jam album as well, although sometimes I lean towards Yield. In terms of single songs, I always thought Do the Evolution was pretty much game over for the "best rock song" contest...pretty hard to top it.

But as much as I love No Code, I don't think of it as my favorite "rock" album...not sure what I call it.

Using the "my favorite album to take to the gym" metric, I'd vote for Veni Vidi Vicious by The Hives.

Other nominees:

- White Blood Cells, White Stripes

- Vitalogy, Pearl Jam

- The Downward Spiral, Nine Inch Nails

- OK Computer, Radiohead

- MTV Unplugged, Nirvana

- Pinkerton, Weezer

- Mellow Gold, Beck

Just missed:

- Cracker, Cracker (22 years old)

- Slanted & Enchanted, Pavement (22 years old)

- Siamese Dream, Smashing Pumpkins (21 years old)

Completely agree, once I saw the Wilco album (which I also love) I figured it was game on for everything. Yield is also a great call, i'm a big fan. Someone else mentioned that Bright Eyes record - fantastic one for my tastes. Deerhunter - Microcastle is one i'm spinning and spinning and spinning lately, again not sure if it's rock or wtf it is, aside from awesome. Aside from Yield, not sure if any of these are rock records.

If we're going ####### nuts in the gym, i'm a big fan of Aenima by Tool, Rage missing out only due to being outside of 20 yrs. And of course OK Computer. Of course.

Yeah, the definition of rock is pretty subjective so I think everything listed so far qualifies.

The answer is OK Computer by a very wide margin.

I'd like to at least acknowledge Polly Jean Harvey's Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea.

Mine would be:

Origins of Symmetry by Muse

White Blood Cells by White Stripes

Downward Spiral by NiN

Rock is a pretty broad term being used in here.

Whats the difference between Alternative and Rock because most of these look like Alt albums IMO.

It isn't really rock if people beyond college still like it. Never has been. It's adult contemporary.

Beginning to end, The Colour and the Shape. Everything else has a weak link, this one does not.
February Stars is bunk. Doesn't keep it out of consideration, but it's certainly a weak link.

I'll throw support behind a double-album by XTC called Apple Venus Volumes 1 and 2. Though released at separate times, they can be viewed as a whole, and they are underrated and brilliant. If only one would be eligible, it would be Volume 2 which is a great rock album on its own.

Radiohead- The Bends

Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies

Soundgarden - Superunknown

Rancid- And Out Come the Wolves

Tool - Aenima

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
