Who do you think is the best safety in the NFL right now?I think I put most of the best ones, sry if I forgot anyone that deserves to be on this poll.I might be a little bias but I gotta go with Troy beacuse he is all over the field with his crazy hair. He is so awesome, everytime the Steelers are on defense I got my eye on him. He flies to the ball and makes a lot of big plays for the Steelers. I love watching him play. He is pure greatness! :towelwave:

There's Polamalu......and then there's everybody else. Reed actually looked human last year. Polamalu has yet to do so.

Are you talking about this PAST year? Reed was injured much of the year. Polamalu is getting a lot of play right now but Reed>>>Polamalu.

My heart says Dawkins, my head says Reed.
Quoted for truth. Also, with all due respect to John Lynch... I love the guy, he's a great player and a great asset to the community, and I have never been able to help but to cheer for him, even when he was in Tampa Bay... but he's not even the best safety on his own team anymore. Still a great, great safety, but he doesn't belong in among the elite anymore.

If the rest of America saw Wilson play in AZ he would be on the list.Reed right now, troy and Wilson in 2 years

Yeah this is right on the money. Polamalu is great, probably ther second best safety in the league but Ed Reed is one of the best I've ever seen. In two years maybe Troy but if you watched the Ravens after Reed came back still not 100 percent, there was a huge difference in that defense. I think he's more valuable to them than Ray Lewis and maybe the best player on defense in football.

This poll confirms my opinion. Reed and Polamalu play the game at a different speed than the other guys. Sean Taylor may eventually join them but I don't think he makes the big plays that those two create.

Reed, when healthy, has been the best in the league. Troy is a freakin' beast and is my favorite non-Redskins player in the league  Adrian Wilson would be a star if he played for a real NFL squad and Sean Taylor is only a tiny baby step behind. His "havoc factor" is right up there and I really believe that he is one of the most physically gifted players in the game. He just needs to be a tad more consistent in order to reach the Reed/Troy level.

I think Reed's a superb safety also but didn't the Ravens put him in a position this past season to *not* be as good as he has been in the past?

At this juncture in time I'd have to say Dawkins because he's the salty vet that's been doing it for so long. Ed Reed is right there, but he's gotta pay his dues and admit he's #2 until Dawkins is no longer in the league. You're right about Troy...the guy is a loose cannon...a heat seeking missile. He's all over the field making plays and as a safety he certainly can change the way an offense game plans. All 3 of these guys are studs...but I'd rate them as I have above for now.

John Lynch pretty much destroys the creditbility of this poll. However, Ed Reed is clearly number 1, and slightly behind him is Troy Polamula and the Rodney Harrison, Adrian Wilson and Darren Sharper.

I also voted for Dawkins, but it may be more of a "over the last 3 years" vote than "today". In a dream world I'd have Dawkins at FS and Troy at SS.

I agree with what you wrote. Taylor is certainly the most uniquely gifted athlete on this list of safeties. He's a huge hitter who tackles like a LB but who covers like a CB - neither of those statements is an exaggeration. The reception by Darrell Jackson by the strong side sideline last week was a good example of his athleticism; he was flat out beat and turned around but was still rangy enough to lay a hit on Jackson right after he caught the ball. 'Skins fans will tell you that we've never seen so many alligator arms or otherwise jumpy receivers than we have in the last two seasons with Taylor back there.

Maybe I was rooting too hard for the offense when I was watching, but I saw quite a few AZ games this year and I don't recall anything noteworthy from Wilson. Can someone jog my memory on him? A couple of big plays / key hits, pass defenses?Normally a top flight guy on D will stick in my memory, but this one escapes me. No disrespect to him, just looking to get more education on him. TIA.

Obviously, I am biased both for Polamalu and against Reed, but I like Troy. Reed may be the better ballhawk (though he gets many more opportunities than Polamalu, as he is typically dropped back) but Polamalu is the more complete player, IMO. He's a better blitzer, better tackler, is stronger in run support, and still manages to find time to pick off a ball about every 3rd game (despite only playing pass coverage about 40% of the time.)"I think Troy Polamalu is the best safety in football, and I think I'd think that even if Ed Reed were playing." - Peter King in SI's "10 things I think I think" column a month or so ago.

John Lynch is one of the most overrated players in NFL history. I voted for Ed Reed despite a down year this season.

I wonder if we are in the minority. Personally, I think he is nothing more than an under-sized linebacker and that is how teams use him. So on television he looks very effective, basically playing the role of an extra (most likely unblocked) linebacker at the line of scrimmage. But as far as safety goes, I think he is in the lower half of the NFL players when it comes to coverage ability.

You do realize that quoting Peter King will not get you very far in here. That being said, a case could be made for either safety being the best.

I have a feling this poll is slanted towards Troy, because of the number of Steeler fans still coming to the board for info (As Piitsburgh is still playing)......jmo.For my money, I'd take Reed. It's close though. Troy has more of a raw quality about him, I would give him the edge in tackling.I love Reed's instincts and ball hawking abilities.

My heart says Dawkins, my head says Reed.
My heart says B-Dawk too, but my head says Polamalu. When you watch the Steelers, sometimes it feels like there are 3 or 4 Polamula's on D. He is everywhere.

In fairness, not a single Eagle played well last year IMO

surprised harrison is getting no love here
If we're taking leadership, being a field general, and intimidation into account, Harrison is the top guy, or perhaps second to Ed Reed as the overall best safety. But I think most people tend to gravitate towards interceptions more than anything else.

Roy Williams is far more superior than any of these being mentioned. Roy plays in the box, in coverage, and hits like Mr. Lott. Troy Polamalu is getting all the publicity only because he's in the AFC Championship. He has really played well in the playoffs, but I would go with Ed Reed 2nd behind Roy.

Roy Williams hits big but other than that all I saw him do this year was get toasted in coverage.

I know, I just figured he'd carry more credibility discussing a Steelers player than I would.

needs to be taught proper tackling technique. the horse collar rule should be called the Roy Williams rule. too bad the refs never call it

Peter King also called the 10-6 Patriots the second best team in all of football. Here's 1 thing I think I think- Peter King is a namedropper whose entire understanding of football comes from asking Zimmerman during coffee breaks. But hey, he was just talking to Brett Favre the other day when he saw that pass interference call against Samuels, and needless to say Brett thought it was a bogus call, too.

John Lynch pretty much destroys the creditbility of this poll. However, Ed Reed is clearly number 1, and slightly behind him is Troy Polamula and the Rodney Harrison, Adrian Wilson and Darren Sharper.

John Lynch went through a seven-year stretch where no TE that he was covering caught a single pass. That's the thing about perception... there's a reason why it's not called "reality". Lynch is portrayed as an in-the-box guy, but he actually used to be VERY good in coverage. Recently, not so much, since he's clearly lost a step or two (and worse, the TEs, especially in the AFC West, just keep getting faster). Ferguson is much, much better in coverage, and almost as good "in the box", although Lynch has great timing and has developed into a standout blitz option.

Lynch is still good. He's still in the top 50% of safeties in the NFL, and the leadership and adjustments he's able to provide on the field are very valuable, but he's nowhere near "elite" anymore.

All of this and not one mention of Mike Brown? He might not be #1, but you'd have a hard time telling me he's not in the top 5

Good call. I knew there was someone missing, but couldn't think of who.
