Best States to Live In (1 Viewer)

25% of Illinois residents ranked it as worst state to live in. Glad I'm outta here in a year.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/168653/montanans-alaskans-say-states-among-top-places-live.aspx?utm_source=alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=syndication&utm_content=morelink&utm_term=Politics#1

One in Four Illinois Residents Say Their State Is the Worst Place to Live

Illinois has the unfortunate distinction of being the state with the highest percentage of residents who say it is the worst possible place to live. One in four Illinois residents (25%) say the state is the worst place to live, followed by 17% each in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Throughout its history, Illinois has been rocked by high-profile scandals, investigations, and resignations from Chicago to Springfield and elsewhere throughout the state. Such scandals may explain why Illinois residents have the least trust in their state government across all 50 states. Additionally, they are among the most resentful about the amount they pay in state taxes. These factors may contribute to an overall low morale for the state's residents.

Hmm. State pride.Mostly a bunch of states with low population. If you live in Montana, you probably really, really want to live there.

Recently read a list ranking cities to live by weather, and Montana had like the worst 2-3 places to live based on. You have to really like Montana to live there.

Alaska and Montana Wyoming are places you move to precisely because you want to live there. Kind of a self-selection bias. Not because your job or company needs you there.

Illinois is basically the opposite. You live here because of the jobs. There's not much else (except for certain parts of the city) that would cause you to choose to live here.

One of the first things you'll notice upon arriving in Butte is the huge open-pit mine on the hillside. A portion of this old mine forms a deep pit, now filled with almost 1000 feet of nasty toxic water. Berkeley Pit is both a Superfund site and a popular visitor attraction. A viewing platform overlooks the toxic lake, allowing you to get a good look while you learn more about its history (for a small ticket price).

Other than Colorado and Hawaii this is a list of places I don't want want to live. I mean North Dakota? North Dakota, REALLY? Utah? Jesus,

The Libby area has many attractions for the visitor and is nestled below the rugged peaks of the Northern Rockies and along the crystal-clear Kootenai River. The movies "The River Wild" and "Always" were filmed there. Unfortunately, for years the town and surrounding areas were slowly being intoxicated by deadly asbestos exposure. In recent years, this problem has been addressed by the EPA but the long term tragedy has been devastating for those living there. The Environmental Protection Agency calls Libby the worst case of community-wide exposure to a toxic substance in U.S. history.

I wouldn't have my permanent residence in 70% of those states for any dollar amount.

A Gallup poll surveyed people in all 50 states to find out what percentage of residents say their state was the very best or one of the best places to live.
This just says where people think they live in the best state, it doesn't mean they are in the best state. A lot of those folks may have never gone anywhere else.

True. They probably base their opinions on what they see in movies and television.

Most of these states have very low taxes and cost of living. Heck you can make 100K a year driving truck in ND with the oil boom

If you love skiing or snowboarding, Utah is attractive.

Between the best lift serviced powder skiing on earth and southern UT, it's a one of a kind confluence of awesome. No idea what's going on in salt lake, but how bad could it be?

If I was 18 and starting over I'd move to ND and work for 10 years and sock away as much money as posible.

Mountain biking in the south as well.
Not saying each state doesn't have some cool things to visit. I don't ski, but I am a MTBer. Still not worth it though. Utah and the morons just aren't my thing.

Two electrician's from my state moved to ND, they work 6 days a week, made $150,000.00, each last year, they plan to work their a few more years before they leave and start their own business.

I'd blow most of it on the high quality talent they bring in.

I lasted a year in ND. Granted, I was by myself with no roomates, girlfriend, wife, or even pet. Just me.

If you have a buddy tagging along with you or a girlfriend/wife, then you'd do fine in ND. But ND is NOT a place to go if you are single and lonely.

all the beer is 3.2%.
Only the big domestic beers are 3.2. Microbrews and imports are the same as they are everywhere else. There are good and bad things about Utah but there are a ton of misconceptions about the state that I found to be entirely baseless in my 2 years living there.

18-27 are precious years that you can never buy back. I don't care how much money I'd make, I wouldn't want to spend that part of my life in North Dakota.

Yeah, you can find "real" beer here very easily---at the State liquor stores. A bit more expensive, though.

I moved here from Seattle 20 years ago for medical residency absolutely planning to move back after 3 years. We loved it here. The skiing and mountain biking are 2nd to none. Golf is great and affordable. Southern Utah is awesome. The weather is fantastic. Cost of living is favorable. I'm not a religious person and I'd label myself as moderately liberal but haven't had any trouble fitting in here. SLC has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 20 years with regards to restaurants, bars, music venues, etc. It's no NYC or Chicago but it's sufficient.

The best place to live? No. Still pretty good and not worthy of derision for making a top 10 list if it's outdoorsy attributes fit your lifestyle.

Exactly.

I think it's the opposite of here in California - people complain about a lot but not many leave.

California has had high domestic emigration rate for quite some time. The population loss is generally made up from foreign immigration.

I find it hard to believe that us people from Jersey don't have the most pride in the country. I'm not even saying there's justification behind it, just that we'll irrationally defend our home to the death in any argument with any person from anywhere in the world.

Then again we do bag on our own state a lot too. Maybe it's one of those things where you can talk crap about your OWN family, but if anybody else does it, all bets are off.

These stupid people, actually liking where they live.

Why don't they move to real state so they can ##### about the cost of living, traffic, and how they only live there because of a job.

That's pretty much it.

This must be a all whitey "best states to live" poll. 8 of those states are the whitest in America.

I see six that are pretty white. What are your eight?
You could say seven are pretty white: Vermont, NH, Wyoming, Utah, ND, Montana, Colorado were all in the Top 15 whitest states as of 2008.

Hawaii has done astounding job of keeping white people the hell out of their paradise, at 24%. We'll see how much that changes when Big Bottom wins the lottery.

Colorado has changed quite a bit since 2008, but I suppose it might still be pretty white.
