Two of the better guys cross eras in Sandberg and Whitaker but you can make your own determination on who has been best in the steroid era years (1986-present).

I think it's Alomar, though I would put Kent pretty close behind him. Hard to deny Kent's slugging, but Robbie's defense was other-worldly, and he was a complete player on offense.

Robbie Alomar, and it shouldn't even be close.

The guy did it all. 5 tool player. Periannual All Star.

He could hit for average, play defense, had range, hit for power, had speed, and could hawk some killer lugies.

Kent. He wasn't the best in the field, but then he's 2B and not SS or 3B. His power was undeniable.

Sandberg and Whitaker had almost identical career numbers. In my lifetime Sandberg is the most overrated player in baseball. He wasn't even close to Biggio, Kent, or Alomar IMO.
I DQ'd Whittaker.....too early.I don't think Sandberg was overrated. He had a couple of HUGE years...placing top 5 in the MVP voting three times and winning once. Over a 10-11 year span he was one of the top players in the league, won the silver slugger award 7 times to go with 9 gold gloves and 8 years with 25 steals or more. An all around great player. Whittaker on the other hand was a consistently good player. Never placed in the top 5 in MVP voting, 4 silver slugger awards and 3 gold gloves and never stole more than 20 bases. Sorry, DD, but Sandberg was a much better player in his prime years than Whittaker was and that's just fact. I do agree that Kent, Alomar and Biggio are a bit better than him though.
