You should only count the years Molitor and Baines were a DH in the steroid era.

Baines was the original full-time DH and the first guy I thought of when seeing the thread title.

Right now, I'd have to go with Edgar, though, based on longevity. In another couple of years, Big Papi will probably overtake him.

Yeah i agree with that. Both are beasts though. When Edgar was in his groove he was a machine but was never the HR hitter Papi is. He had great gap power though and was a doubles guy. Loved to watch him hit.

Ortiz if we're looking at the best hitter, Edgar if we're looking at the best career. Who would you rather face with the bases loaded and the game on the line? Exactly...Ortiz gets the vote.

I don't think Ortiz was a better hitter than Edgar. From 1995 to 2000 Martinez's lowest average was .324 and his lowest OPS+ was 151. His 1995 season is better than any of Big Papi's. Ortiz just has more power, he never was and never will be a better "hitter" than Martinez IMO and the stats back me up.

id rather pitch to papi than edgar anydayall edgar did was get base hits and drive in runs, he didn't need the long ball to make himself a good hitter

I know he's having an off year, but what about Travis Hafner? His numbers have been better than Ortiz's at each age IIRC.

With 2866 career hits and 384 career home runs, why wouldn't Harold Baines stick around and get 3k and 4hondo?
