Best value in NHL draft (1 Viewer)

Yeah, not a topic many follow, but for those that do..

Who is the "Tom Brady" of the NHL Draft?  Late round who was really productive, or mid round guy who played at 1-2 round level?  Was looking at some drafts recently after it was pointed out how dreadful the draft that had the two Sedins in it was.   Saw Jamie Benn at 129, and thought he was serious value.

Who you got?

Lucky Luc was a mid 100s guy. Zetterberg was the 200-something pick his year. I think Datsyuk went in a similar range a year before.

Girardi was an UDFA and would probably have been a decent answer a year ago.

tough to top Benn

some others though:

Joe Pavelski was a 7th round pick in 2003.

Dustin Byfuglien was an 8th round pick that same year.

also, Zetterberg was a 7th round pick in 1999 and Datsyuk was a 6th round pick in 1998.

Corey Perry was taken right after Jeff Tambellini and Brian Boyle

Personally, I think we're all still sleeping on Hugh Jessiman.

1984:

  1. Brett Hull - 6th round (117)
  2. Luc Robitaille - 9th round (171)
1983:

  1. Dominik Hasek - 10th round (199)
1982:

  1. Doug Gilmour - 7th round (134)

Thanks for making me feel like an idiot. I threw ####in Girardi out there before him.
Martin St Louis is also a much better example of an undrafted free agent that turned into a great player than Girardi

other undrafted players:

Adam Oates

Peter Stastny

Dino Ciccarelli

Joe Mullen

Dan Boyle

Borje Salming

Brian Rafalski

Ed Belfour

Sergei Bobrovsky

Curtis Joseph

IMO, the answer is Pavel Datsyuk. There are so many goalies that are late round picks, I discount that somewhat. Datsyuk was a legitimate superstar and was taken later than Benn.  I can see the case for Robataille as well but I think Datsyuk is/was a better player when accounting for teammates, era, all around play etc...

it was also a different era though. lots of Russian/European players weren't scouted very heavily back then.

Benn has quickly developed into a perennial Hart trophy candidate. He seems like a classic late bloomer though, kind of like Brady.

True, but that's the case for most of these picks. Jamie Benn was drafted out of the BCHL, all the undrafted Americans before the USHL/US College system really emergerd etc..
