Best value on a 90" TV? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
I keep waiting for the price to drop a bit on the Sharp.

Is there any other 90" TV which can touch that model, but at more of a reasonable price?

I'd wait for when 4K comes out to see the pricing. I know real estate is a big selling point, but if I can get a 4K 60" for around the same price, I'd check it out.

I have an old-school 65" Mitsubishi Diamond. It has served me well for many years, but it's getting old. Time for an upgrade.

RN, is this your centerpiece TV or a satellite TV? I guess what I'm asking is, what is your setup? Are you running multiple TV's for NFL sunday's, etc. and are looking to upgrade some of those, or would this be your centerpiece TV? I'l assume at 90" this is the centerpiece TV for you. If you're running multiple TV's for sports, might be worth what drummer was saying and doing a 50-60" for the centerpiece and refreshing the satellite's too with the excess left. My only thing with 4k is, I'm sure it will be amazing, but how long will it take for the next Blu Ray type of content (forget the name off the top of my head) to pump content out for it? Will it be "downloadable"? My point being, you might be waiting for some time to even get enough 4k content to make it worth it. I'd do highest refresh rate 1080p centerpiece TV that makes you happy, and if you have leftover and have multiple TV's for sports, upgrade them too if need be.

Good points, but 4K content is already being created as far as outside broadcast media. Personally, I always wait for an event like the Super Bowl (I think Sony is gearing up for a launch of 4K displays for the World Cup) to get deals offline.

Ehhhh, long story. The PC is connected to one flat screen via HDMI. I also have other cheap-brand flat screens to hook up for multiple football games. But yes, this next big purchase will absolutely be the Mona Lisa of the crowd.

Yeah, I mean it's what makes you happy. If you're good with the other TV's for Sundays and don't feel they could use or need an upgrade, go as hi-rez/screen size as you have a budget for. If the extra TV's annoy you in any way, see if you can budget for a refresh for them too.

I have a 1 bedroom apartment, 865 sq. ft., and an old 42" 1080p 60Hz Toshiba TV in my bedroom that is absolutely excessive for the room, but being 6 years old works. My "centerpiece" is a 47" 1080p 240Hz Vizio in my living room, which is perfect for where I have the couch and distance to the TV. On Sundays, I do RedZone on the Toshiba, which I move to the living room, and Sunday Ticket on the Vizio. That works for me. Would love to have more TV's for Sundays, but they'd literally sit in a closet 348 days a year. So to me, the centerpiece TV is everything, and when I need a re-fresh (hopefully not for awhile) I'll push all chips in on that.

Have fun with it man, if going big on the centerpiece TV is what you want, you are going to have a blast shopping!

Plus, I "hear" there is a Naughty, forget the rest of the name, adult website already putting tons of 4k content out there.

Worth investigating

I already have a few of them. Although they don't render well with my setup.
I think unless you have a wired setup, that's your only chance with any 4k video outside of direct connection via a WDTV or similar device with content loaded on a USB drive or stored locally. 1080p itself needs to basically go wired to play without jitters/stops in the video play, I've never been able to get even 1080p videos to play seamlessly over wireless N.

I would love to have huge monitors on 4 walls and the ceiling and stretch screen Goole earth or Google street view.

Projector out of the equation? I have one in the basement that goes up to 120" that's great and far less than that.
GB of mine had a projector a few years back, and the picture is vastly inferior. Have they come a long way?
Completely whiffed on mentioning this. A GB of mine has a projector in his basement, 1080p, and it's freaking sick. It's definitely worth investigating when you're getting into the 80in+ range. The picture quality is fantastic, not sure off the top of my head what make/model, but it's awesome. A bunch of us watched a playoff game last season on it, ruled.

Wow, good to know. The bigger, the better!

ETA: some links would be much appreciated.

Radier, why not get a projector ? it would probably be cheaper and better
I don't know about better. I have had the Sharp 80" now for almost a couple of years - it was was less than half the 90". The 90" was $10K at the time so you can see the drop in that time in the link. Well worth it. Picture is awesome and I typically sit about 8 feet from it.

I am sticking with this until I go 120" - likely will be awhile :)

Opinions vary when it comes to these things and there are people that are just crazy when it comes to audio and video, but unless you're one of these people, I couldn't see why you wouldn't think the picture quality is awesome. You're talking like $2 for the entire setup. The only downside is that you need a basement environment that you can get really dark.

I have a 1080p projector and am using a 106 inch screen. The setup can't be beat for a great immersive viewing experience. Projectors have come a long way in the past 5 years or so, it used to be you had to pay 3 racks plus to get a decent one, much different nowadays though. I paid $1,250 for a bright, 1080p, 3d projector. With a little light control, looks amazing. With no light control, the picture does get washed out, but is certainly watchable. If you have a room where you like to watch "events", a projector is the way to go.
