Tuesday's news: Running back Kevin Jones, recovering from Lisfranc surgery on his left foot, continues to show progress in his rehabilitation. "He's running very well. He's not there yet, but he's doing well,'' said Lions president Matt Millen. The Lions will likely wait two more weeks before determining whether Jones will be ready to play in the regular-season opener Sept. 9 against the Oakland Raiders.
Detroit News:
Injured Lions running back Kevin Jones plans on being the starter Sept. 9 in the season opener at Oakland. He took a step toward his goal by catching passes Thursday for the first time since injuring his left foot late last season. Strength and conditioning coach Malcolm Blacken fired passes to Jones, who caught balls and made cuts against imaginary defenders. "It was a good day," a smiling Jones said. "I felt good. The bottom line is, it was feeling better so I said, 'Let's do some reps.' We are going day by day."
Marinelli comments on KJ:
> On RB Kevin Jones
“Just day-to-day still; just day-to-day running, cutting, all those things. We’ll see how it works out. That’s a hard injury for a trainer to deal with. It’s just about pain sometimes.”
>> On if Jones will have a reaction to playing in pads
“No question. As soon as you put the pads on, and, boy, you plant and make contact – these are tough injuries, but we’ll just play it (out). It’s up to the trainers when they give him a green light to add to.”
Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski was on local radio yesterday and is still in the 50-50 camp regarding him starting on PUP. He says when KJ is healthy, he is the unquestioned starter, and that the Lions and Martz believe he is an elite RB.
My own opinion still is about 90-10 that he starts on PUP, and I believe he plays and starts when he comes off. But the fact is nobody knows right now.
The Lions are expected to decide within the next 2 weeks or so.
