Bidding for Draft Position (1 Viewer)

People in one of my re-draft leagues think there is a substantial advantage to drafting early on and want to put draft slots up for auction. It is a 10 team serpentine draft and each team already has a $100 entry fee. Is LT2 or Stephen Jackson really worth paying a high amount for? Is LT2 worth an extra $50 or more?

Has anyone ever tried this before and how well has it worked?

TIA

Doesnt work, unless everyone is in the same financial bracket and situation.

What is 100.00 to some is to 10.00 to others and 1.00 to someone else.

Did you have a league that did this before?Did some people end up mad that some people could afford to outpay them for the top pick or did it never take off to begin with?I do not like the idea myself but the commish floated the idea out there and most others seem to want it.

Sure did. Some people simply wouldnt bid any money beyond the minimum. Other had cash to burn.We thought that was fine as it added more money to the pool, but those with money (or at leats those willing to spend it) kept winning out. Is most of your leagues about the same in terms of finacial situiation? (All college students or all are middle class folk) If so it could be fine.

We do a draft lottery. Our tech guru downloads a ping pong ball lottery machine. We shoot it up onto the wall with for all to see. You are able to buy up to 6 balls each for $5 a ball. Of course, some teams need to buy less balls depending on their finish last year. Out of the money usually catches a little break during the lottery for purchases. They usually already have three in the pool. The balls come out with the team names on them. Everybody seems to enjoy it.

If your bidding for draft position, it sounds like you should go with an auction draft.

Depends on what your payouts are going to be - in $$$ leagues that do this the #1 draft pick will go for well over $2000 this year - BUT all the bid money is paid back out to the highest scoring team each week.

I've played in a league like this for 10 plus years (for many years against Captain Hook), spending cheap can pay great dividends, so it really helps to even things out. I would think it may be a problem for a $100 entry fee though, the amounts just won't matter enough to some people. (The very first time I played fantasy football, you paid the money you bid on each player, so someone could have LT, SJ and PM etc. But in the era before the internet and even fantasy magazines you could draft a team that did just as well as the best players from the year before). Anyway, from a fairness point of view this is really the way to do a draft. LT cost significantly more than any other player so you get a smaller return on your investment, which is fairer. You get the 12th pick for a buck and buy this years Frank Gore you have a real shot, but your high risk is properly rewarded when you are right.

I don't understand. Unless this league is ultra-competitive picking last isn't THAT big of a deal. If the fee is usually $100 and ppl are saying some ppl will spend whatever it takes to get the first pick then by all means let them. There's no way the ROI is any good beyond paying maybe 10-20% more.
