Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

I guess making him coach in the NIT should be considered part of the punishment

I know you joke to take a shot at Michigan, but by doing this, Juwan really hurt his team. More importantly than him being suspended, Diabate and Terrance Williams will likely also be suspended. And they are fighting for a tournament spot. Going to be a lot harder without Diabate especially.

Pretty surprising the conference would be OK with him coming back for the conference tournament. That entire week is now going to be about Howard being back, when could Michigan and Wisconsin play one another, etc. Not a good look for the Big Ten.

So 5 games with pay?

He’ll be so neutered.. whomever they play will do whatever they can to get under the skin of Howard/Michigan players…

Hopefully it ends in a firing or further discipline and this is to buy time to finalize everything. He's not stable enough to be a leader/example for young men on now multiple occasions. He's had 24+ hours to issue a simple statement "I overreacted. Coach Gard explained his (perfectly logical) reasoning for his timeout and we were pressing".

Don't even waste the time with a prepared apology at this point

Nah..Players and player parents love Howard and that probably held some weight. Also, a lot of cultural support.

Howard has a great class coming in next year.  A few wins and like all sports all is forgotten.

Without pay. Plus a $40k fine from the Big ten.

This Hoosier team could #### up a 2 piece puzzle.

They just give games away. Up by 4 with the ball a minute left they call a timeout. Then turn it over 10 seconds in

Martelli is a heck of a coach to replace Howard.

Speaking of Jay Bilas, he was on Sirius XM Big Ten radio during the 9:30AM segment.

He had a great comment about Izzo and the handshake line.

Paraphrasing, JB sez that look at the true competitors. So many coaches want to blow-by the handshake when they lose but want to stop and have a nice, lengthy chat with the losing coach when they have won. But Izzo stands out as the ONE GUY who does NOT do that. "Izzo will stop and give his due to the coach that beat him EVERY time. I've never seen him NOT do that."

Bilas giving tons of respect to Izzo.

I love the end Izzo shakes head “shesus”    lol

Classic video of Siena coach Jimmy Patsos shaking hands with air as Rider walks off without showing sportsmanship.

I am a lifelong Michigan fan. Yesterday I was embarrassed. Today I am f***ing irate. First off who cares if this happened differently or why the participants were angry. Juwan is the head coach, he can’t be taking swings at other coaches. He got 5 games, I would suspended him of year, but he didn’t exactly get a slap on the wrist. Now, why am I po’d? 1) Gard not only didn’t get a game, the UW AD came out and said they consider the event a school issue, not a Gard issue, and the school will pay the fine. Are they serious? That’s basically coming out and saying we condone the actions of our head basketball coach. What a terrible example. And most importantly point 2) Kranbenhoft got nothing, no suspension, no fine. He had his hands on Williams and Faulds, and Williams ended up on the ground as a result. But of course the conference refuses to show UW any discipline, especially towards Davison, who put 2 Dickenson and Jones on the ground w/ cheap shots. Terrible job by the Big Ten and Kevin Wilson specifically

Also a Michigan fan, and Gard really didn't deserve any penalty at all.  Krabenhoft probably did, and the guy who cheap-shotted Terrence Williams should have gotten more (I think it was Neath, the guy who got one game). Williams was trying to break things up until he got clobbered in the face out of nowhere.

I'm just glad the bar has been set so low by the league and Diabetes for throwing haymakers (Diabetes 2nd offense mind you- first was in the handshake line at Rutgers), that MSU's bench guys will be seeing some increased action by going full WWE on team's best players, starting tonight in Iowa City. Like someone up top said, going make for some exciting action!!!

:lmao:

State is worse than Iowa. They’ve completely forgotten how to create any offense.

MSUs program is on the downhill slide.   Izzo reminds me of Bobby Knight, not afraid to berate a player in public for mistakes instead of coddling them.  Do you think Izzo is too old school now for today's players?

No

They have talent, they are just not a confident team right now.  Zero on the floor leadership

Yes. They condone their head coach talking to another coach and touching his elbow…even a light grab.

Seriously…what did Gard do that deserved more than he got?  Hell, what did he do that warranted a fine at all?

Iowa pasting Michigan State tonight. Gabe Brown is in a bad place. Spartans need him to snap out of it.

Big Ten 4 or 5 through 8 are a jumbled mess.

I have no issue w/ Gard not getting suspended. My gripes are the AD treating the whole thing as if UW did nothing wrong by saying the school would pay the fine, and Krabbehoft getting nothing despite putting his hands on two Michigan players

More to your point @Summer Wheat

Michigan State Basketball used to mean certain things. Effort, determination, toughness, fight, competitive spirit, and teamwork to name a few. I haven’t seen much of that in the last few weeks from the players and coaches wearing Michigan State uniforms. I really hope they can get it back.

None of the things I listed are skills. They are all choices. You choose to box out your man or you don’t. You choose to guard your man hard or you don’t. You choose to set hard screens or you don’t. You choose to dive on the floor for a rebound or you don’t. All the little things that have nothing to do with skill.

Sometimes you’re going to run into a more talented team. And that’s fine. It’s acceptable to be out-talented. At Michigan State, it’s never acceptable to be out-worked. Or at least it didn’t used to be. Here’s hoping our team remembers that, starting now.

We’ve struggled before and Izzo has pulled a rabbit out of a hat, but this feels different because we’re seeing things consistently we’ve not seen here in a long time. Lack of effort, lack of toughness.

Who in this team plays hard and tough consistently? I’d say Hauser and that’s it for consistency and he has his flaws.

Bingham is a 7 footer that plays like a guy 6-6. Hoggard is a leader but too inconsistent and young.  Hall is inconsistent.  Brown, I feel bad for, he's a complete shell.

I agree with you.  The players have changed, Izzo hasn`t.  It is much harder to get todays players to buy in to play that kind of BB now.

MSU won the big ten in 2019 and 2020. His style didn't just stop working with "today's players" in the last 24 to 48 months. I think this year's MSU team is just an enigma where he doesn't have the right players, the chemistry is off...every team has an off year or rebuilding year once in a while.

I do not disagree with you. But just want to point out that MSU wasn't very good last year either. And they will lose at least Brown, Bingham, and Hauser next year. Though I am sure he has some good recruits coming in.

Big win for the Wolverines. Needed that one.

2-2 in the remaining four games should be enough for the tournament. I think.

3-1 or a good run in the Big Ten Tourney is probably a better idea. I suspect that the Howard incident won't get them any positive Bubble points with the Committee.

Another horrible officiated game.  How can a ref call an injury timeout and then not only let the player stay in the game but let substitutions?   It has been this way for several seasons now, but you can smack on Kofi and not worry about a call, but he slightly bumps you and gets called for it.  I get that he is 7' 300lb and can bench press a small car and a small bump from him is probably a full push from me, but just because he doesn't move doesn't mean he wasn't fouled.

Loved Underwood doing the arms up swings to get the crowd going after he was ejected, a big FU to the entire officiating of basketball.  No idea why a coach trying to pump up the crowd would be a technical.

MSU played really well today.
Pretty much every Boiler was off their game.
A game like that gets Purdue knocked out of the NCCA tournament in an early round. 😞

Happy Sparty played so well.  I’m shocked Painter didn’t just feed Edey the entire game… especially down the stretch.  MSU just couldn’t stop him.

And, as usual, such a poorly officiated game.  I’m so tired of BIG officials.  I used to think it prepared teams for the tourney, but now it’s just unbearable.

Awesome time at the Brez today. Big needed win. Amazing what happens when a little extra effort is put forth. Gabe looked real good finally. Can’t say enough about Marble.

Congrats to Tom for matching Bobby Knight in B1G wins at 662.  Will be great when he breaks that record Tuesday at A2.

Refs are an abomination across the board.

GOGREEN

It's amazing how long it took the refs to finish the game. It was like they were pulling people out of the crowd to watch that replay.

Ho hum. Bucky v Purdue for the de facto (co)title on Tuesday. The Kohl Center has been relatively dead as of late but should come alive for this one.

Hoping for a tough B1G classic that the refs somehow don't screw up /sarcasm :pleasenotBoBoroski

Side note, the top 6 losing in one day is insane. There's going to be some shuffling but nothing drastic, hopefully. Those are still the top teams imo.

Glad to see everyone survived the handshake line even though Martelli grabbed Underwood’s arm.

After watching this MD-tOSU game, Im convinced the B1G is going to do very well in the tournament. Every one if these teams are battle tested. This season has been a war in conference. I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least 2 B1G teams in the F4

Im calling in all my favors to try to get to that one on Tuesday night. Seems I don’t have as many favors over in Madison as I thought. Tough ticket.

Anything interesting happen the last 7 minutes?? (not sarcastic) The one time I did not check the DVR to make sure I had an extra hour cushion.  Game cut out with 7 left, I see that Illinois won by about the same margin they had.

Really puzzling when they go like 10-13 for 3 in the first half and then don't attempt one for 10 minutes into the second half.
