Damn.. I got all excited when I saw that Joe Theismann had miraculously locked up 100% of the vote.Looks like this poll will end up being a sham.

While i dont disagree with any of them, I really feel like Irvin has to be up there somewhere. And Stu Scott. God I cannot stand that guy.

My list would be:Salisbury over Irvin by a hair with Theisman lagging those two a little bitThey're all terrible.

I like Jaws, Sal, Mort, Steve, Golic and Tom Jackson. That's why you don't ever see Salisbury, Theisman or Hoge on the main programs.

Theisman did Sunday night football as their A team. How much more main can one get?

The whole network has gone in the toilet. Linda Cohen is doing the X games this week while we have the above mentioned and the likes of Skip and Woody at the Super Bowl. I can't watch 1st and ten and really just stick to NFL Live, the first thirty minutes of Sportscenter and then the sporting events themselves. The rest of the programming is fodder at best.

What is the deal with Merril Hoge? Those suits he wears are weird. His jackets practically button up to his neck. Or is that just the "Hoge" look. Besides, he loves to argue for the sake of arguing with John Clayton.

While I can understand why Merrill Hoge is on the list, the one thing I can say for him is that he has been an absolute guru when it comes to predicting the outcome of Steelers games the past 2 seasons. The morning Pittsburgh ESPN show has Hoge on once a week to break down the Steelers matchup in the coming week and make a prediction. Damned if he isn't close to 100% accurate. Last year he predicted the entire season correctly week by week. This year, the only game I think he got wrong was the loss to the Bengals. He may be a tool but he and Jaws do a great job breaking down film.

Yeah, sorry, but Irvin and Stuart Scott have to be in there. Can't stand 'em...Though Theisman and Macguire are horrible, too. All four should be given the door..

Didn'the pick the Steelers to beat the Pats in the AFC champ game last year? Come to think of it--doesn't he always pick the Steelers to win regardless of who they're playing? I get the sense that he's a bigtime homer (just like Bradshaw).

He's definitely a homer but he doesn't always pick the Steelers. I know he said the Steelers would lose to the Colts on Monday Night (not really going out on a limb) and he also predicted Steelers losses to the Pats and Jags earlier this season.

OK I wasn't aware of that. I've just never heard of him picking against them.

Didn't realize there were so many Irvin haters. He doesn't bother me much, but to each his own.

this poll is seriously flawed for not including about 2 dozen other people to choose from.fred hickman is the first good hire ESPN has had in over a decade. and if they had any brains they would highlight him wherever possible.

Saw both Salisbury and Irvin yesterday. First thing I thought of was how some in the Shark Pool might punch this guy in the nose if they were me.

Salisbury

The arrogance earns him the King of Tools title.
this was my vote, I realize the arrogance is part of his schtick, but I wince every time he starts talking.

who?

ESPN is quite a tool factory, but at least guys like Stu/Sean/Merril can come up with solid takes. Mr "I-Got-Owned-By-LT" is not only the most argumentitive announcer to ever make the NFL unlistenable, but his innane takes make Mike Irvin look like a friggin Einstein.

It is a tie between Michael Irvin and Stephen A. SmithGun to my head I guess I'd have to go Smith, at least Irvin wears cool-looking suits

Hoge's stupid statements are normally the most out there, but he's actually not terrible breaking down tape. They need to limit him to the role opposite Jaws, because if he thinks outside those roles, he's a buffoon.Salisbury is more of an annoying know-it-all jerk who makes wacky statements, but he gets more right generally than the other two.Theismann - is he ever correct? If I gotta pick one, it's Theismann, because I can't think of a way he can help a broadcast.

I've never understood the hatred for Theismann. He's certainly opinionated, but isn't that what he's paid to be? You actually get some football analysis out of him . . . as opposed to Maguire who is only able to comment about "Look at the feet, look at the feet!" or, "Folks, let me show you why [insert name] is so [insert superlative]", on play after play after play.

IMHO, Theismann's quality went downhill because of Maguire; I still don't understand why they added Maguire to that booth given that Theismann and Patrick had a good thing going. If you had to compete with Paul Maguire for oxygen and to get a (pertinent) word in edgewise, I have a feeling you're apparent intelligence level would take a hit too. Although Steve Young is not as good as Theismann, it's not unlike what's happened to him with a jackass like Irvin sitting next to him.

I too dislike Merrill Hoge, but he's far better than a good number of "analysts" and "personalities" on that network. The only guy who I have unabashed admiration for as an analyst is Jaws - he always seems to provide the most in depth breakdowns of what's going on on the field.

As far as ESPN's NFL reporters go, John Clayton is excellent - minimum of speculation and solid sources; Mort is just behind him although Mort gets caught reporting rumors that don't pan out on occasion.

The turds are all around. Salisbury has gotten better (he'd have to) but still stinks. I remember him from his days out here in SoCal on sports radio and he was flat out awful - he's one of those guys (Ditka's another one) who constantly interrupts his own sentences with new statements because he gets new ideas as he goes. I voted for him.

I also would add on the list Irvin, Sal Paolantonio (too much Philly bias), Ditka, and Berman (whose schtick has worn waaaaaaaaaay thin).

I'm even considering adding Tom Jackson whose game has clearly declined in my view. I don't see much analysis out of him any more, just general commentary, and he certainly has his biases.

this is a good point. TJ is still likable...but he is being pushed aside by the outlandish personalities he has to work with.i also agree with the others who say Jaws is solid on analysis.

he usually gets laughed at and ridiculed by his predictions and then proves to right on.

:goodposting: how many time you gotta hear 'the Lord says you got ta rise up!" ?? just exactly what is a 'playa hate-ah?!?! and if i sleep on an 85-degree water bed, the other side of the pillow is not `cool`..stu has to come up with some new material.

..Irvin sucks. I don't think he speaks English.. maybe thats why I can't understand him??!?!

I'd say Lupica on the Sports Reporters is the biggest tool...he is like the skinny runt that always yells `FOUL` when you play hoops..he's overly dramatic and that stuff he does as they sign off is annoying..he can never sit still..is he saying hi to his kids by grabbing his tie or by talking over Saunders when he kicks it back to SportsCenter? whatever he is doing, its very annonying.

How is Chris Berman not on the list? And Michael Irvin - only entertainment value from him for me is watching him move all over the screen and watch the camera guy try to keep him in frame. In the early days with Irvin, they would put up the small window next to his head for some intro to the next story - it was hilarirous. They had no shot of keeping his face in frame with 1/3 of the screen occupied.Watch him in fast forward sometime - you'll easily see what I mean.Stu Scott. If I ever hear "the iladelf" again, it will be too soon. (that's supposed to be cool speak for Philadelphia.... pause for crickets) Theisman's lack of love is because he flips faster than a short order cook at IHOP. For example - the Chicago Bear game on ESPN. First he criticizes the QB switch (from Orton to Grossman). Shortly thereafter (maybe even the next play) he's spouting how it was a good move. Take a stance and stick with it, right or wrong. Salisbury does just that, but his delivery of his point (and his adamant position of never being wrong, at least it seems) offends many.Paul Maguire - "Let me tell ya somethin' ". If you hear that phrase, drink. You'll be under the table before halftime.

As for Hoge - he's fine in his role on NFL Matchup. Sal Pal and Jaws only add to this show - which is easily the best one on the network.

:goodposting: I could type for hours and still not run out of negative words to say about this #### sucker.

Whenever he comes on it's time to change channels.

Now, now, let's clean this up a bit.

Is this just NFL commentators? If so Thiesmann takes the cake. Lee Corso and Dickie V are neck in neck with him overall!!

I'm with you completely Diesel.. Stu is beyond annoying. He's a caricature of himself.
