Bill Parcells..."In this offense, you're just not (1 Viewer)

Just watching ESPN News and clips from Bill Parcells' press conference. He was discussing TO and how Owens has a challenge ahead of him because he's not playing in a WCO for the first time in his career. He said he expects things to work out well, but he told TO that "in this offense, you're just not going to catch 100 balls...it's just not going to happen." Bill said as long as TO realizes that and accepts it, things should work out.

Obviously this is May coachspeak and TO's numbers will be TO's numbers (arguably Bill has never coached a WR of TO's ability); but I found it kind of telling because there is going to be some massive TO hype/expectations this year in a lot of circles.

77 1200 15.6 14

TOs numbers from 2004. He missed two games. But that ain't 100 catches.

He will be a monster, in the right format......

WIN! or DIE TRYING!

BP has always been so insistent on his WRs blocking well first. There's some story about Meshawn(and other rook WRs for Bill) blocking every play and never getting a pass their first day of TC. Anyhow I figure he wants TO to understand the importance his blocking plays

Totally agree, But he can do with 70-80 catches what Key and Terry Glenn never could.

Sure he can but I think that's just BPs point. Fundamentals first no matter how much of a star you are.I think this is interesting in that TO is getting challenged to do something:block. BP's pushing the right button now. It's only May but it's gonna be cool to watch a HOF coach deal with him. If TO nails someone with a crushing block and Jones is freed up+ runs in for a TD, I'll be thinking "good job Bill"

Yep. I brought this up in Dodds initial rankings. I'm not expecting super stud status for TO. It's just the way Parcells plays the game. TO can do so much on his own, but if the targets aren't there, and I'm telling you all they won't be that high, then his numbers will be considerably less than the hype.

His TD numbers could be real high. IIRC BP had Vinny throw a ton of lob passes to young Meshawn utilizing his height+"ups".

I remember Joe Gibbs saying he was going to limit Portis's carries to 15-18 per game in 2004.

He ended up averaging 22.8 carries per game that season.

You don't bring in a guy like TO to only have him catch 60 passes. They could've brought in Joe Jurevicius for that.

with TO it's not "how many catches"...it's "how many games"

16 games = monster season (probably #1 WR if he plays 16 games)

He's caught 100 passes one time in his career.

If anyone was predicting he would catch that many, they were betting against the odds anyways.

While the catches may be limited for TO in Dallas, what he does with those catches probably won't be. I took a look at what TO and Keyshawn did from 1998 (3rd season for both WRs) on and while TO only averaged about .75 more catches per game than Keyshawn did, he averaged 1.5 more YPC and more than twice as many TDs per game.

Taking those differences into account and looking at what Keyshawn did the past 2 years in the Dallas offense, I get the following projections for TO:

82 catches, 1176 yards, 13 TDs

That's actually a little lower than I thought it might be when I started writing this post.

Last year that would have put Owens in the top-10 (PPR) but clearly outside of the top tier. And of course that assumes 16 games played, something Owens has done less than half of his ten seasons.

So he's looking like a 2nd tier WR / low-end WR1 (12 team league) as a best case to me. Definitely less than I was thinking before I started looking at the numbers. Something to think about.

TO is the type of player that it doesn't matter WHAT type of system he's in -- he will produce, and produce well. His production has never been the question...

He should certainly be one of the first WRs taken in fantasy drafts this year...

Is T.O. sitting out yet? I'd figure anything like that would trigger a kindergarten tantrum from him.

:goodposting: Exactly, he will produce no matter where he plays, as long as he can keep himself in check.

TO should be garunteed 1000/10, but after that it will depend on how often Drew looks his way. TO can catch the X, Y, and Z so he should have plenty of opportunities.

He can run any route. The real question is, who becomes the possession receiver? Crayton, Glenn, Whitten? TO can do so much more than Keyshawn after the catch which is where TO does most of his damage.

I think it's a toss up between Glenn and Witten. I don't think Glenn has ever been considered a posession receiver before, but a posession receiver by definition is someone who'll get the 1st down for you. Glenn can do that.Crayton would have to beat out Glenn for playing time to be THE posession receiver.

Agreed.Parcells likes to run the ball a whole lot more than Reid did, so it stands to reason that 100 catches may be tough to reach regardless. Add in two very good receivers in Glenn and Witten, plus the recently drafted Fasano who seems to have good hands, and 100 catches seems to be a reach.

But as mentioned, it's what he does with those catches is more relevant, and obviously he brings a whole lot more big-play ability than Keyshawn ever did.

Parcells has changed his O to match his team in the past(at times). It hasn't always been all ball control. I think young Bledsoe set a (then) record for most attempts in a year.

possession receiver will be witten->TO->glenn->crayton

witten will need fabini to start. TO will need to have trust with bledsoe. glenn is a bad safety blanket for bledsoe. everytime he's the go to guy they fail, oakland, seattle, and denver. crayton is the perfect guy, but i'm not sure how far he's advanced. he has the best hands.

i'm not sure what the 2TE will bring.

So I wonder of T.O. will start some elaborate (sp??) celebrations for good down field blocks?

That is one thing I think T.O. is going to get frustrated with his Parcells lack of pass plays inside the 10 yard line.
