**Bills 10-3 at Lions 12-1** (-2.5, 54.5) 4:25 (1 Viewer)

The 10-3 Bills, coming off a thrilling 6-TD performance by Josh Allen in a 44-42 [loss] at the Rams, have a much shorter flight this week. They are 3-1 out of conference and 4-3 on the road, and clinched the division shortly after Labor Day.

The 12-1 Lions rode their offense and converted 4 of 5 4th down attempts in a critical 34-31 win over division rival Packers. Their patchwork defense should get a 2-3 DL back this week. They've won a franchise record 11 straight but are somehow only 1 game ahead of the Vikings for the NFC North and the Eagles for the #1 seed. They do hold strength of victory tiebreakers, by a wide margin, over both teams.

Jim Nantz and Tony Romo with the call.

Great matchup, and I'm looking forward to watching this. I worry that this is the second game in a row that isn't really that big a deal for Buffalo (I know, seeding) but that matters a lot for their opponent. Not that Detroit isn't perfectly capable of winning anyway.

Looks like the game of the week AND a "Fantasy Gold" game of the week
A plethora of fantasy starters on both teams
Bills defense got gashed Sunday by The Rams
Lions still dealing with a plethora of injuries on defense
This one could be caraaaaaaaaaaaaaazy
Why not...

Detroit Lions- 44
Buffalo Bills- 42

Cheapest lower bowl ticket is $555
Seems like a bargain compared to what it cost to get into most stadiums
Run of the mill Dolphins game at Hard Rock, $300+ for a lower bowl ticket

I will say that I have not been to as many NFL games in recent years, many reasons but for what I pay to attend 1 NFL game the right way, my NFL ticket/YT is covered and still money leftover for beer and food on my comfy couch with my music streaming and no commercials/commentary

Euphoria but I do enjoy the live game experience
When you are in the right mood it's a lot of fun being at Hard Rock Stadium and the Hard Rock Casino 1 exit up after the game

Detroit has extra rest days playing at home against an east coast team that had to fly west the week before. Buffalo in a bad spot here.

@davebirkett

Buffalo has had some significant problems stopping the run against teams with good running games. The Lions have two really good running backs and an outstanding O-line. The Bills will have a hard time winning this game if their DTs can’t play better than they have.

Buffalo Bills cancel practice after 30 inches of snowfall

Virtual meetings today. Snow day.

Despite the lack of practice, the Bills added safety Damar Hamlin (back/ribs) to the injury report, joining safety Taylor Rapp (neck/shoulder) and cornerback Rasul Douglas on the list of injured starting defensive backs ahead of facing the league's No. 1 scoring offense.

For the unfamiliar, that’s 4 DL and the LT, who all missed the last game (2/3rds of it for McNeill)
No bigger impact than McNeil. He’s playing out of his mind this year.

Was good out of the gate & has improved every year. Glad they gave him the extension.

Lions have spent ~ $600M since April to lock up Goff, ARSB, Decker, Sewell, Monty & Alim.

That is 6 of 22 starters locked up. Plus Gibbs, Hutch, Jamo, Branch, LaPorta, Terrion, and Campbell still have multiple years/option year on their rookie deals. Ragnow is signed through 26. DJ Reader and Anzalone have another year left. Very solid core when healthy for the next few years. Would like to see CD III for another couple years. Kirby needs to be resigned and Hutch needs a long extention. Cap management will get more difficult as the big salaries hit the books, but they did a great job so far.

Against a team like Indianapolis or somebody, we would have the option of selling out to stop the run and taking your chances with a rookie QB and so-so receivers. Obviously that's not a viable option against the Lions. They're a bad matchup for everybody, but we don't match up well either.

Allen is probably the worst nightmare for the Lions. Allen lives on beating the blitz and making off schedule plays. Once he gets out of the pocket, he completes a higher percentage of his passes and much deeper down the field. And he is a lethal run threat. The Lions can not rely too much on blitzing and man to man coverage. It is going to be interesting on what Detroit dials up on defense.

If Jamo can get over 1000 yards, Detroit will become the first team in NFL history to have two recievers with over 1000 yards recieving and two RBs to rush over 1000 yards.

Lions LT Taylor Decker (knee/ankle) and DT D.J. Reader (shoulder) are both off the injury report and set to return Sunday vs. the Bills.

LB Nowaske (concussion, out) is the only Detroit player on today’s injury report.

Douglas out. 8 players have a questionable tag but 5 of those were FP on Friday.

I don't think I've ever been this interested in an injury report.

Pretty good outcome for Detroit. Decker and all the DL are off the report.

Buffalo missed third down install day (Thursday) & only met virtually because of snow. Seem a little banged up on the back end - heard Rapp is unlikely to go, and Douglas (taken out by their friendly fire collision) has been declared out.

Two highest scoring teams getting it done in distinctly different ways. Goff has a plethora of weapons at his disposal - power, speed, finesse, schematic design. Allen is superman. Great runner, having a really efficient year passing despite not having an alpha receiver. Tied with Darnold for the league lead in big time throws (29); interestingly, he has at times struggled when under pressure - and he's also made an NFL best 13 BTT when pressured.

Defensively, contrasting styles. Detroit blitzes often, especially on third down. Buffalo is bottom 5 in number of designed blitzes. Rousseau has generated 50 pressures and delivered 7 sacks. Vonn Miller only has 1 sack in the last 11 weeks, but he is still capable of rendering havoc. Interior DL has contributed only 4 sacks (Lions have 11 sacks from their DI), and are the primary reason the Bills are giving up 4.8 YPC. Really like the Bills rookie LB Dorian Williams (Tulane0, excellent run defender who can cover a lot of ground.

Za'Darius Smith has 4 sacks in 4 g since coming over from the Browns. McNeill, Onwuzurike, Paschal and Reader are all healthy, which bodes well for the home team. LB is still a bit of of a hot mess, Jack Campbell and a bunch of guys from the land of misfit toys, but Aaron Glenn has been making it work. The strength of the sans-Hutch defense is the back end, physical corners and the best Safety combo in the league.

Detroit has a slight edge in special teams but the Bills are a well coached team, they don't have glaring weaknesses anywhere.

It's always good to see a quality interconference matchup this late in the season. Should be a great game.

Lions are wearing their alt black on black uniforms with the alt helmet for the second time this year; they also repainted the 50 yard line logo black for this game only. Detroit is 12-0 when wearing monochromatic uniforms.

I think Buffalo is in trouble tomorrow. Too many things working against them. If they somehow pull out a win, I'll be impressed.

ETA: I think the score will be something like, Lions 37-23.

For Buffalo, I think Khalil Shakir could have a lot of success matched up against Amik Robertson. I think the Lions can keep Allen in the pocket and make him win passing, and that's tougher for him to do, especially against a Lions D that creates turnovers.

For the Lions, I think the Rams gave a pretty good blueprint for how to attack the Bills D. Throw the ball in the middle and short, with RAC, against bad tackling. To me, this feels like a good Sam LaPorta week, and obviously Amon-Ra should get his, and I think some screens to Gibbs should be heavy in the gameplan.

from PFF:

Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions (-2.5)
Storyline of the game:
Potential Super Bowl preview

This game marks one of the high-profile matchup of Week 15, featuring two of the top teams in their respective conferences. Both the Lions and Bills have secured a playoff berth and now look to add a signature win to their resume to provide the boost needed to ride high to end the regular season.

The Lions are soaring following their NFL-best 11th straight win in Week 14 in a game that was a nail-biter. Detroit ultimately escaped with a three-point victory against the Packers off of Jake Bates‘ game-winning field goal as time expired.

On the other sideline, Buffalo is seeking redemption after its shocking upset at the hands of another NFC opponent in the Rams, who held a 17-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Despite three scores from Josh Allen in the final frame, the Bills still fell short.

Matchups to watch: Lions RG Kevin Zeitler vs. Bills DI Ed Oliver
The Lions remain one of the NFL’s most consistent and effective offenses due largely to their presence on the ground, led by players like Kevin Zeitler. The veteran has shown out in his 13th season, earning career-high marks as a run blocker with an 88.7 grade — the second-highest mark among qualifying guards this year.

Conversely, his matchup this week, Ed Oliver, has demonstrated significant struggles fitting the run, recording just a 43.9 run-defense grade — ranking 103rd out of 133 qualifying interior players. Since Week 9, Oliver has only surpassed a 60.0 run defense grade once.

Additional news:
Bills QB Josh Allen becomes the first player in NFL history to score three passing and three rushing touchdowns in a single regular-season game, a feat Otto Graham managed to accomplish during the playoffs in 1954.
The Bills ownership group has sold stakes to a number of partners, including NBA legends Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady.
The Lions will see return of DL D.J. Reader, Levi Onwuzurike and Josh Paschal, all of whom were absent in Week 14.

Analyzing the matchups that could define the NFL in Week 15:

Bills’ extra offensive line sets vs. Lions
This article had to begin by dissecting Bills-Lions, which pits what appears to be the best team in each conference against one another. Although these two sides could feasibly square off yet again in Super Bowl 59, expect both head coaches to leave no stone unturned in a win — which means the Bills should stay true to their identity.

One of Joe Brady’s calling cards as the team's offensive coordinator is his implementation of extra offensive linemen. Buffalo has utilized six or more offensive linemen on 15.2% of snaps, easily the highest rate in the NFL. That tendency has worked well, leading the team to rank sixth in EPA per play and second in yards per play (5.5) out of Jumbo sets. What also helps is that, while the Bills lean heavily toward running out of the formation, the team has also passed on 25.6% of such snaps.

However, Aaron Glenn’s defense has been unbelievable when opposing offenses try to add extra linemen. The Lions rank first in EPA per play against such looks and have permitted a stunning 0% success rate on seven such defensive plays faced.

The simple truth is that, despite Detroit's extreme effectiveness against teams trotting out extra linemen, the sample size is incredibly limited. How well will the Lions operate against a Bills team that deploys the formation more than anyone? If Detroit’s injured defense can stand tall, then the team could reach 13 wins. If not, the Bills could secure arguably their biggest win all year.

Khalil Shakir vs. Amik Robertson in the slot will be key to watch: Shakir ranks second in the NFL with 521 receiving yards from the slot, while Robertson has given up the third-most receiving yards to players lined up in the slot with 321 yards permitted.

Lions slot corner Amik Robertson will have his hands full with Khalil Shakir, who has emerged as one of the league’s most productive slot receivers. Shakir ranks second in the NFL with 521 receiving yards from the slot, while Robertson has given up the third-most receiving yards to players lined up in the slot with 321 yards permitted.

• Jared Goff leads the NFL with 164 play-action dropbacks, and he has been highly productive on those throws with 1,580 passing yards — 259 more than the next-best quarterback — and 12 passing touchdowns (second-most). But the Bills have done a good job defending play action this season with only 7.1 yards per attempt allowed — which ranks second-best.

Game Day: How to watch and 3 things to watch for Lions vs. Bills

Justin Rogers
Dec 15, 2024

When: Sunday, Dec. 15, 4:25 p.m.

Where: Ford Field, Detroit

How to watch: CBS (Jim Nantz/Tony Romo/Tracy Wolfson)

How to listen: 97.1-FM The Ticket in Metro Detroit or any number of network affiliates around the state.

Line: Lions -2.5

Injury report: Detroit is getting plenty of reinforcements this week with Taylor Decker, Levi Onwuzurike, DJ Reader and Josh Paschal set to return to action. Alim McNeill is also off the injury report, clearing protocol after missing the second half of last week’s game against Green Bay with a concussion.

The only player the Lions have ruled out is linebacker Trevor Nowaske (concussion).

Officiating assignment: Adrian Hill’s crew. This will be the ninth Lions’ game he’s worked since being promoted to referee in 2019. They are 3-5 in the previous eight, but have won three straight, including this year’s season opener against the Rams.

Last meeting: The Bills came to town a couple of Thanksgivings ago, taking part in a thrilling back-and-forth affair. The Lions tied the game with 23 seconds remaining, but the visitors quickly worked into range for a 45-yard, game-winning field goal.

Three things worth watching

● Bills quarterback Josh Allen is great and worthy of his MVP-frontrunner status, but still susceptible to an off day at the office. Remember, he was held to a 9-for-30 outing against the Texans earlier this year. And he wasn’t much better against the Ravens a week earlier, completing 16-of-29 for 180 yards, eating three sacks, and losing a fumble in that 25-point loss.

Last month, against the Colts, he completed under 60% of his passes and tossed two interceptions, in the middle of a streak of four straight games with at least one pick.

Yes, Allen is getting the better of opponents most weeks, but there’s a blueprint to slow him down, and it starts with keeping him stitched into his pocket. That means maintaining discipline with rush lanes up front — an area where the Lions have been solid this season — and keeping an extra set of eyes trained on the backfield in the second level as frequently as possible. That shouldn’t disrupt what the Lions like to do schematically, particularly how they use safety Brian Branch as an underneath robber within their heavy Cover-1 usage.

In addition to limiting Allen's scrambling opportunities, the Lions need to be at the top of their game with tackling. Allen loves throwing underneath and the Bills rank second in the NFL in average yards gained after the catch.

● Keep an eye on Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau, who does not get the credit he deserves given how well he affects the pocket. It’s not complicated to understand why when you look at the former first-rounder's sack totals. He has a respectable 6.5 through 13 games, threatening to top his career-high of 8.0, but he’s well behind the league leaders.

That said, Rousseau has already registered 50 QB pressures, hitting that mark for the third consecutive season. He rushes from both sides, typically matching up against the right tackle on early downs before flipping over the left tackle on third down. He has outstanding length and initial burst, using the long arm and bull rush to condense the pocket. It’s that pocket-collapsing style Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn loves so much from his edge defenders.

It’s worth monitoring how Decker holds up against the powerful Rousseau. The blindside blocker has missed the past two weeks with a knee injury and has been wearing a brace this week. His mobility could be limited, adding to the challenge.

● The Bills are one of the league’s most well-rounded teams. Allen is a stud, the run game is highly productive, and their defense is top 10 in scoring while generating the third most takeaways.

If there’s a weakness, it’s the third-down struggles for that defense. Opponents are converting 43.2% of the time and the Rams brutalized them last week, going 11-for-15. Meanwhile, third down is a strength for Detroit’s offense. They rank fourth in the league, extending the drive on 45.8% of their tries.

Buffalo doesn’t give up a lot of big plays, particularly in the pass game. Detroit will likely need several sustained scoring drives, which is doubly important because it will help keep the ball out of Allen’s hands.

I think the Bills are a bit of a fraudulent contender. I think this is a statement game from the Lions, and I think they win with little trouble, though the Bills keep it respectable.

For Buffalo, I think Khalil Shakir could have a lot of success matched up against Amik Robertson. I think the Lions can keep Allen in the pocket and make him win passing, and that's tougher for him to do, especially against a Lions D that creates turnovers.

Ha, we're speaking the same language. I'll add Buffalo had to travel to cross country the previous week and then had to cancel practice because of weather so they missed a day of practice.

Surprised I haven't seen any mention of CB Rasul Douglas being out, and both starting safeties Q for the Bills. I'm guessing they both play since I haven't seen any call ups for the secondary, but still a concern.

Missing 3 starters in your secondary is not exactly how you draw this one up if you’re the Bills.

With the 1 see being extremely unlikely, getting healthy is getting almost as important as winning games for Buffaloz

Big props to Lions fans showing out. Most Bills away games look virtually like home games in the stands. Not this week for this Great Lakes game.

Bills not one to blitz and be aggressive, but missing so many guys in the secondary it makes sense to change things up and try to speed up Goff’s timing.
