Billy Butler, KC (OF), called up from AAA (1 Viewer)

Billy Butler, KC (OF), got called up to the majors today and went 2-4 in his MLB debut. He was the Royal's first round pick in the 2004 draft and is supposed to be one of the top hitting prospects in the minors. In AAA this season, he was batting .337 in 25 games with 6 HRs and 23 RBIs. He also had 18 walks for a .445 on-base percentage. He had a strong spring training this year with the Royals, batting .419 with 7 runs, 2 HRs, and 10 RBIs. Most experts seem to believe that he is capable of hitting .300/30/100. I think he's definately worth an add in AL-only leagues.

Here are some selected quotes from Project Prospect. (http://www.projectprospect.com/profile-billy-butler-1-24-07/)

"No one in the minors can hit like Billy Butler can. No one.

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Royal farmhand has made a name for himself since being drafted in the first round of the 2004 draft. He has flat out mashed the ball from day one on his ascension to becoming one of baseball’s top prospects.

Butler’s swing is one of the best swings in the minor leagues. He does an excellent job of waiting for the ball and keeping his hands back. His quick hands and strong wrists help him drive the ball. What’s more impressive is the way in which he is able to cover all sides of the plate. He is able to extend to reach the outer half yet still protect the inner half.

Butler’s superior skills and mechanics mean he is able to drive the ball to all fields. Nearly every ball he hits is hit hard.

Butler is a good contact hitter with solid potential to transition his elite skills to the big league level. He can flat out crush the ball and has excellent plate discipline. He is the best pure hitter in the minors.

When he does get called to Kansas City, Butler could become one of the premier sluggers in baseball. He certainly has high potential to hit above .300 and mash 35+ home runs. He compares favorably to Justin Morneau with a little more power or Prince Fielder with a little more average."

I'm hoping to grab him in my AL only keeper league this week. I should've picked him up and put him in my minor league spot, but I've been holding onto Garza in hopes that he would get called up first, then I would've signed Butler to my ML spot. Here's hoping no one else takes a shot at Butler this week, but I doubt I can grab him with the 4th selection.

He's had a multi-hit game in 3 of his first 4 games in the Major Leagues, going 3-4 with an RBI tonight. He definately looks like he is ready to compete at this level. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Yeah, I'd drop Andrew Miller for him. This guy has batspeed to spare, and his minor league numbers suggest he has an all-world bat.. Hopefully the KC front office keeps him in the lineup. 6 RBI's tonight, 1 HR, 4 R. Get him to work at 1B in the off-season, and keep him at DH for the time being.

KC finally has some hope on offense.

Butler and Gordon are going to be great hitters. If only the Royals could afford to keep them when they become free agents.
