Billy Goat curse - circa 2009 (1 Viewer)

As seen in today's Columbus Dispatch Sports section, page C4:

Going into play on July 31, the Cubs had a 1/2 game lead over the Cardinals in the National League Central. That night, at Land Shark Stadium in Miami, the mascot Billy the Marlin paraded a goat in front of the Chicago dugout. The Cubs lost that night and have gone 9-16 since. Meanwhile, St. Louis has been on a rampage, pushing Chicago to the fringes of contention.
The curse lives!!! :P :)

My most sincere apologies go out to Lou Pinella. To think that I blasted the guy for making a big deal out of this.

The whole idea of there being a curse is rather silly, but the team does let things like that get in their head. Cubs teams are so aware of the history and how everything can wrong, the minute something does go wrong, they let it get to them, the team plays tight, and disaster happens. It happened following Bartman in '03, and it happened last postseason. Look at how deathly silent Wrigley Field got last year in Game 1 the minute the Dodgers took the lead. Think the team doesn't let that get to them? The team looked dead in the water for the rest of the series after that.

But as for this year, the team wasn't that good in the first place, and the Cardinals were gonna win the division no matter what, once they got Holliday, anyway, billy goat in Florida or not. Still fun to chuckle about such things, though. :porked:
