Blind Bidding (1 Viewer)

Everyone says when going into an auction you should never have money left over. But what about if you need to keep some cap space for blind bidding during the season? How much do you leave? 5%? 10%?

Anyone got any BB pointers for us auction rookies?

I would double check the rules. In most auction/blind bidding leagues, the auction bucks and blind bidding bucks are two seperate accounts. Usually each team will get 100 bucks for blind bidding after the auction and you lose whatever auction 'money' you have remaining.

If you are in an unusal league that does it differently here are my opinions:

1. Auction bucks turn into blind bidding bucks (no additional amounts given)

Spend all your auction bucks during the auction. You will be able to grab better players for cheaper, as the other owners try and hold back some for blind bidding. Don't pass on spending a few more 'dollars' for a proven player just so you can have some left over to bid on a flash-in-the-pan player who has one good game. Unless your rules state that you can not pick up any waiver wire players without at least 1 buck, you still should be able to grab injury fill-ins during the FCFS phase of the waiver period. If there is no FCFS period and you do need at least 1 buck, then just hold back 3-5 at most.

2. Left over auction bucks are added to blind bidding bucks.

As with 1. use it all while the others are trying to save some. Whatever bucks you're given will be enough for your use.

3. League is a Capped Auction, and the auction bucks given is equal to the Cap.

Determine what the minimum amount of bucks is needed to get 3 players from waivers based on the rules and hold that back. One should not go into an auction (or draft) planning to grab a bunch of players off the waiver wire... doing so just shows you don't trust your drafting choices or skills.

Auction budgets SHOULD have Nothing to do with FAAB budgets(if for some reason you are in a league that lumps them you have plenty of time NOW to get the rule changed)

It's more of a salary cap situation where I have $1k to spend on a 32 man roster (including IDPs) so a lot of traditional auction advice doesn't apply. I wasn't aware this was so unconventional, but given a lot of the scoring system (return yards, 0.5PPR for RBs) is different I'm not really surprised. I quite like the fact the league differs from traditional formats, it should give me an advantage.

Anyway, rather than taking this down an Assistant Coach path, how about some discussion on how blind bidding strategy differs from traditional waivers?

To answer you question, I would have to see more about the rules, roster requirement etc. I am in several leagues where there is a single hard cap for all types of player acquisition but they are keeper/dyansty/contract and it appears as though you are asking a about a re-draft.

We have a $100 hard cap in my favorite league. The $100 bucks has to cover the draft, FA blind bids & can be used to cover the difference between trade values (all trades have to have equal value either in player salaries or additional cash thrown in).

I usually save any where from $5 - $10 for moves during the season.

Thanks, this is exactly the situation I'm talking about. Given the roster depth in this league I'm probably leaning towards 5% at this stage.

I play in leagues that lump them together as well as leagues that keep them separate. It just requires a different strategy.I usually plan for 2 FA moves at minimum bids during the season in the leagues with combined budget. Survivor mode ($0 for free agency) does not win championships, but you need to be aggressive at the draft because studs do win championships.
