Bloom's Draft Grades - AFC North (1 Viewer)

If this were a who purchased the best perceived potential talents the Bengals win in a landslide.

That said, I think four years from now we'll look back at these four drafts and think Cincy's was the worst of the division. Not because of lack of talent, but because they can't develop it.

This is the big question - it's like planting seed that need rich soil in sand... history has shown us that character risk guys seem to end up fulfilling worst case scenarios more than best case scenarios in Cincy. That being said, Smith isn't a terrible kid, just one that is immature, and Johnson is actually a good kid and very coachable, it's just his motor that needs revving. Maualuga has his boy Rivers to keep him company. You can tell a story about all three where they work out. You can picture all three among the best ten players in this draft without stretching too much. I dig it.

I'll disagree with Huber being the Bengals worst pick. Here are the last few 5th round picks. Instead of getting a nobody like they normally do, they've got a starter.

2009 6 142 Kevin Huber P Cincinnati

2008 10 145 Jason Shirley DT Fresno State

2007 14 151 Jeff Rowe QB Nevada

2006 25 157 A. J. Nicholson LB Florida State

2005 17 153 Adam Kieft T Central Michigan

2004 17 149 Maurice Mann WR Nevada

2003 1 136 Khalid Abdullah LB Mars Hill

2001 4 135 Victor Leyva G Arizona State

2000 4 133 Robert Bean DB Mississippi State

I hear you, it's a philosophical objection more than anything else.

Gotta chuckle a little about the Punter being the worst pick - kinda makes as much a statement about how well the Bengals did on its own.

I gotta disagree as well, and oddly enough the pick I thought might be listed as the worst (Bernard Scott) is the one that I really feel worst about - mainly because it seemed like there were other viable options at RB like Rashard Jennings who didn't have the red flags that Scott did - though the recent red flag guys we've taken have stayed out of trouble of late.

In defense of the Huber pick, Larsen was costing us probably 50 yards a game in field position easily - even if Huber moves us up to average in punting stats, that's a whopping 7 yards a kick. Plus he adds the intrigue of punting lefty. I thought he was the only punter worthy of a pick and would've been gone by 6.06.

That said, I can certainly understand your philosophy on the matter :blackdot:

Thanks for the fair-minded assessment.

i agree with your pre-grade commentary on the steelers with positives about hood, lewis, wallace and especially shipley who i think will start eventually, too. did you lower your overall grade so as to not come off as a homer? the grade seems inconsistent with the report (which was well-written, i might add). i'd give the steelers a grade in the B range myself.

The fact that the Steelers worst pick was described as follows:
Ziggy Hood can eat glass, spit it out, and then walk on it, he’ll be an excellent grinder up front at a position that was getting thin.
says a lot about the Steelers draft. They played it pretty safe, especially early, but that's a sensible approach on a team that is returning virtually its entire starting lineup from a championship season. Also, from a Mr. Obvious perspective, picking last tends to work against having a sensational draft, unless a team is willing to trade future picks.

Your grades:Baltimore Ravens -- B

Cincinnati Bengals - A

Cleveland Browns - C

Pittsburgh Steelers - C

Ravens

Round Pick Player Name Position College

1 23 23 Michael Oher T Mississippi

2 25 57 Paul Kruger DE Utah

3 24 88 Lardarius Webb DB Nicholls State

5 1 137 Jason Phillips LB Texas Christian

5 13 149 Davon Drew TE East Carolina

6 12 185 Cedric Peerman RB Virginia

Oher should start as a rookie and upgrade their line. Kruger is thought to be overrated in some circles. They didn't address their biggest need entering the draft, wide receiver.

Bengals

Round Pick Player Name Position College

1 6 6 Andre Smith T Alabama

2 6 38 Rey Maualuga LB USC

3 6 70 Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech

3 34 98 Chase Coffman TE Missouri

4 6 106 Jonathan Luigs C Arkansas

5 6 142 Kevin Huber P Cincinnati

6 6 179 Morgan Trent DB Michigan

6 36 209 Bernard Scott RB Abilene Christian

7 6 215 Fui Vakapuna RB Brigham Young

7 40 249 Clinton McDonald DE Memphis

7 43 252 Freddie Brown WR Utah

I love Andre Smth and think he will be solid for years. Maualuga packs a whallop but from all accounts he is a two-down player and their are whispers of a drinking problem, 'allegedly'. Johnson is a one-dimensional pass rusher who is weak against the run. I like Coffman a-lot and their is intrgue with Maualuga being paried with USC teammate Keith Rivers but every team in the first round passed on Rey so he's got to prove he's more than a two-down player.

Browns

4-12 .250 PTS 232 PA 350

Round Pick Player Name Position College

1 21 21 Alex Mack C California

2 4 36 Brian Robiskie WR Ohio State

2 18 50 Mohammed Massoquoi WR Georgia

2 20 52 David Veikune DE Hawaii

4 4 104 Kaluka Maiava LB USC

6 4 177 Don Carey DB Norfolk State

6 18 191 Coye Francies DB San Jose State

6 22 195 James Davis RB Clemson

The Browns not only got a solid starting center in the first round but also picked up a second round pick and got two defenders at areas of need on defense who should come in and start (DE- Keynon Colemand and SS Abram Elam) along with a developmental QB (Brett Ratliff) who already knows the offensive system and should help in turoring Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson in the new system being installed. (If the Jets didn't trade up for Sanchez some NY wogs were speculating that Ratliff would start over Clemmons so he has untapped potential). The Browns got WR Brian Robiskie at the top of round-two and he has potential to come in right away and start. They took a flyer on WR Hohammad Massoquoi address a glaring weakness on offense since Joe Jueruvicious is gone and Donte' Stallworth might also be gone. LB David Veikune addresses a major weakness on defense and that is pass rush. High motor, tough kid with a shot to contribute as a rookie and it wouldn't suprise me if he ends up starting by the end of the season. The Browns also got two late round picks after moving down and don't forget to add-in the cost savings of trading out of the top-five so that money can go to help re-signing vets or going after free agents.

Steelers

Round Pick Player Name Position College

1 32 32 Evander Hood DT Missouri

3 15 79 Kraig Urbik T Wisconsin

3 20 84 Mike Wallace WR Mississippi

3 32 96 Keenan Lewis DB Oregon State

5 32 168 Joe Burnett DB Central Florida

5 33 169 Frank Summers RB UNLV

6 32 205 Ra'Shon Harris DT Oregon

7 17 226 A.Q. Shipley C Penn State

7 32 241 David Johnson TE Arkansas State

Ziggy is a three-technique DT so could you explain how he fits on Pittsburgh's D-Line because I don't see it. They traded out of the second round and got a Pittsburgh project on the O-Line but their most successful MO has beent to get OG gems late in the first round and ride them to the Pro Bowl rather than take mid/late round O-Line projects and develop them. I don't like anything about the Steelers draft. I thoght they would address center but I think the Browns got the guy they really wanted so they went to plan-B and tried to address the age issue creeping up on their defensive line.

My grades:

Baltimore Ravens -- B

Cincinnati Bengals - B+

Cleveland Browns - B

Pittsburgh Steelers - C-
