Mock Draft 2.0 First Round

As always, lots of hard calls. I wanted to make a statement with my placement of Andre Smith and Michael Johnson of where I value, not necessarily the NFL at large, although I think Im closer than the conventional wisdom right now. I wanted to introduce some new names as potential first rounders that weren't in the first of my 1.0 mock like Clay Matthews, Connor Barwin, and Donald Brown, and have a few consensus first rounders drop out (as always) - this time its Harvin and Wells. I also gave Vontae Davis a slot right around his best case after doing one with his worst case (falling out of the first) last time.

As always, feedback is more than welcome, this is one of the best groups of homers in the football world and I highly value y'alls thoughts.

:football:

Small thing to get this rolling...

With the QB needs 17-20 don't you see that as a more reasonable spot for Mark Sanchez to land than #22?

DHB the first WR off the board?

Michael Johnson a 1st rounder again?

New England takes a CB when they've signed a couple already?

I would love Sanchez to the Vikes.

Robiskie ahead of guys like Nicks and Britt? And in the 1st no less?

Overall, I really like it though. Looking forward to subsequent rounds. :lmao:

Looks like he's thinking of value picks as well as teams finally addressing O-line rather than getting ahead of themselves @ QB. Makes sense, except that I figure Chilly will end up influencing the pick to get someone who can help him keep his job by being impactful now rather than admit he's failed at grooming Jackson.

can't wait to read the whole thing, boom...

but as a rams fan, didn't need to read very far to get to the meaty part... :lmao:

i like jason smith or monroe to the rams at 1.2... probably the talk about barron to LT & bell to RT is draft posturing (& even if not, neither may be long term solutions)...

& if not, i'd be very OK with curry, probably crabtree, too...

the LTs, curry & crabtree are similar grade-wise (i realize there is some debate even there, but blue chip LTs very hard to find, & j. smith & monroe clearly seem to be the cream of the crop, in terms of overall grade, including physical tools, athleticism, character, work ethic, intangibles), the rams have gaping holes at all three positions... you could make a strong case that all three are viable alignments or intersections of BPA/team need... the picks are ALMOST interchangeable, & they should defininitely get better no matter which direction they go...

curry & maybe crabtree SLIGHT separation in terms of BPA grade...

j. smith & monroe SLIGHT separation in terms of team need (& the pick being recommended on positional scarcity & cost of acquisition/replacement basis)...

* just to cover all bases & for fun, a scouting report i wrote on curry recently, after looking at his highlight reel (case for taking curry based on BPA)...

curry -

"wow... WOW!!! this was the guy that really roared off the screen... not saying we shouldn't take monroe, but if we pass, somebody else might be getting a serial pro bowler, & possibly the next ray lewis... the complete package... great instincts... shockingly FAST with proverbial sideline-to-sideline range... EXPLOSIVENESS really stands out on film... finds the ball carrier, always around the ball, good at avoiding blocks, great balance & stays on his feet... barbaric, medieval striker, people invariably go backwards when he makes contact... BLOWS... THEM... UP (curry is a BAD man... a patient pigskin professor who tirelessly instructs dense ball carriers with continuous object lessons in applied physics... 254 lbs. + 4.54 40 = OUCH)... yet plays under control... disciplined & rarely out of position (well, these were the HIGHlights, not the lowlights package... )... plays with great field awareness & football smarts, i was impressed with one sequence where he was not fooled by misdirection & made the play... looks fluid in coverage, can stay with receivers downfield... didn't see him blitz much, but was terrifying when given the chance... ZERO doubt in my mind he could add this to his arsenal & repertoire if given the chance... imo, not a difficult or controversial projection to MLB, looks like he can do it all... elite, superb conditioning, never seems to change speed (MAXIMUM!), no matter what time of the game it is... will give your thesaurus a workout trying to come up with creative superlatives & descriptive terms worthy of the physical tools, athleticism, talent & overall skill set of this prodigy & phenom... more torn than ever between monroe & curry, the gap is nearly closed & the picks are virtually indistinguishable... if we opt away from LT, i like him even better than crabtree... only LBs with the rarest talent should be taken here... curry falls into this category... legit candidate as the #1 overall prospect in the draft, wouldn't fault DET for taking him (i definitely would over stafford, a no brainer), though, like us, they could be powerfully drawn to the LTs... also, after seeing him on path to the draft, liked the fact that his "models" who he patterned his game after were the original LT & **** butkus... nice role models! was also impressive, and oozed charisma while being interviewed briefly by paul burmeister at the combine... if we don't go LT, i can't imagine being any more sold on this guy."

** team fit (case for taking curry based on team need)...

"the STL new suddenly more competent & effective front office/coaching staff/scouting dept brain trust could also be thinking this is almost certainly a several year rebuild, & if curry is the best player in the draft & smith/monroe aren't elite prospects, better to take the sure thing & go after another OT next year... again, if LT, LB & WR roughly similar needs, they may think that the defense needs more help than offense... the defense in some ways is coming off their worst season in franchise history... curry could be a serial pro bowler, the rams ray lewis, who when paired with second year chris long, is capable of being one of the faces of the stop unit, changing the culture & identity of the oft maligned defense into one that is tougher, more hardnosed & physical, making his teammates play better with his intensity & example & elevating the play of the entire defense... that would be a welcome development to long suffering rams fans!"

Always fun and educational to read your stuff.

I just saw this on PFT. Sounds like Andre Smith had a horrendous workout. Not sure this guy goes in the top half of the draft. Too many red flags.

SCOUT: “SMITH LOST MILLIONS TODAY”

Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 11, 2009, 4:25 p.m. EDT

Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith’s campus workout today in front of NFL scouts was a “disaster,” according to Tony Pauline of SI.com.

Quoting an unnamed scout, Pauline writes that Smith’s lack of preparation was obvious as he was overweight. One scout called the performance, “one of the worst workouts I’ve ever seen.”

Another AFC East scout told Pauline: “He lost millions today.”

As a league source told us earlier today, Smith ran with his shirt off.

According to Pauline, comments were made about “the flab and the rolls on his body” during Smith’s 40-yard dashes as he posted times between 5.21 and 5.29 seconds.

Per the article, several scouts weren’t happy to travel a long way only to witness a bad workout. And Smith’s trainers were not pleased, either.

UPDATE: NFL.com has reported additional details on the workout, noting that Smith was 6-4 1/4, 325 pounds with 40-yard dash times of 5.28 and 5.33 seconds.

He turned in a 25-inch vertical leap, a 7-10 broad jump, a 7.88 time in the three-cone drill and bench pressed 225 pounds for 19 repetitions.

Yes, however Maclin and Jerry qualify as "guys not expected to be there" that the Jets and Bucs would take unless they were smitten with Sanchez, I gave Chicago Sanchez last time, and Detroit takes Stafford in this mock.

I don't see Andre Smith going in the first at all anymore. Much less the top 10.

3 RBs in the 1st round, none named Beanie. If this happens he's going to have a huge well deserved chip on his shoulder.

DHB the first WR off the board?
Crazy Al strikes again - I do say that it's an out of nowhere pick - to be accurate you have to have at least one of these
Michael Johnson a 1st rounder again?
He always has been on my board, I just refused to give in to the groupthink that keeps pushing him down when I was putting this mock together. If I was in a war room of a team in the teens, Id push for Johnson.
New England takes a CB when they've signed a couple already?
Shawn Springs and Bodden are band aids at best. Bodden got a "camp look-see" contract. Besides, the draft is never about immediate needs (when it's even about needs), it's about long term needs.
I would love Sanchez to the Vikes.
I think its a good landing spot for him - good defense and running game, will set up for success. Im not sure he's a "pull a team out of the ditch" kind of QB.
Robiskie ahead of guys like Nicks and Britt? And in the 1st no less?
High floor over high ceiling. He's a coaches son, he's going to light up the interviews, make a team feel real warm and fuzzy about taking him in the first.

I think SF goes Oher at #10. He's be a great fit at RT opposite Staley and fits the Singletary/Raye smashmouth O.

Jenksin? Meh. Too early for a FS, and CB is still pretty solid with Clements, Walt Harris, Tarell Brown, Reggie Smith, Strickland, Spencer coming back from injury...

Other option would be Everette Brown.

I hear you on Curry. He and Crabtree are both franchise players. I wont have Curry fall past #3 in any mock, he's that good. If I didn't put Stafford to Detroit in this version, it would have been Curry #1 overall. He's a very rare specimen, and I honestly can't even find a nit to pick with his game. He can line up anywhere in any scheme and excel, Im not sure if there's another LB in the league I can say that about.Agreed on Barron at LT being crazy talk to make it seem like all options are on the table in case a good trade partner comes a-callin

I see Jenkins as a CB, with FS as a plan B and good reason to still get him in the top 10 - I almost gave them Brown. Oher makes sense too, but I wanted to drop him in this one, because as I said, Im just not feelin the love for him right now. As I said, I think SF needs a playmaker somewhere in the secondary - but they also need an edge rusher just as bad - I have a feeling Brown will end up at the 10 slot in one of my future mocks.

I'm down with that. I think there might be something to the idea that he was a victim of scheme rather than his own lack of effort.

I don't see Andre Smith going in the first at all anymore. Much less the top 10.
Mike Lombardi, who is usually on point, has this to say:
Will this take him out of the top 10? Right now, it might. Work habits are critical to a team paying all that money to a top draft pick. The risk of giving huge guaranteed money to Smith, especially with his lack of self-motivation, is sizable. Even if he improves his time and his numbers, the core person may not change. The next two-week period might help his bench and might help reshape his body. It might even improve his 40 time. But it won’t change who he really is as a person.
First of all, that means that he was still firmly in the top 10 before today - the sky is not falling despite what people were saying after the combine.Second, he said "it might" - MIGHT - which should tell you how sick his game tape is if there's still a chance that he can stay in the top 10. When the postseason stuff conflicts with game tape, teams tend to fall back on game tape. Of course, teams will get to talk to Saban and the Bama OL coach and get the real dirt on his work habits. Even if it's as bad as his tubby look at his workout, someone will STILL take a chance in the first because he's a rare talent on the field. If he falls out of the first, I have to assume that he started to say things in interviews that made people wonder if he even cares about football, or that he admitted he likes to eat small children or conduct dogfights.

Did I miss Wells or is he just not in the 1st round?
He's one of my surprise drop out of the first guys along with Harvin - Donald Brown basically replaces him. Wells didn't have the combine everyone was counting on, and he's an RB who gets banged up, doesnt seem to like to play hurt, and one source told me that he refused to practice this year. He reminds me a lot of Maroney, and we all see how that turned out.

Mack would be the ideal fit for the 6 time world champion Steelers at #32.

The "band that has been kept together" needs the intangibles and leadership he would bring.

Barring an unexpected name falling, he is my top choice for Pitt.

8. Jacksonville - Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech - Crabtree won’t fall out of the top 10, but he might come close. There’s no disputing his rare talents on film, and he should be an instant difference maker. Teams just get a little skittish about taking a player in the top five that they can’t workout before the draft - ask Adrian Peterson. Matt Jones latest arrest makes wide receiver a position the Jags must address on draft weekend.
Value equals need here.

I would think that we would see Del Rio break his best 40 time ever running to the podium to make that pick if Crabtree is still on the board at 8.

There may be a little to the effort concerns but I think the biggest concern with MJ is I don't get the feeling he truly loves football. But I think he's always been in a first rounder in terms of raw talent and upside. He can definitely rush the passer but someone needs to teach him how to play run defense.

I would think Cleveland would be running to the stage to draft Wells if he ws still available in the 2nd round. The question is would he still be around after the Seahawks?

If this is true it is going to drop him for sure.

You make a strong case for Curry but I just have a suspicion that a franchise tackle would be hard to pass on for KC. If Stafford doesn't go #1 then I see them trading down and going OT assuming someone trades up for Stafford to #3. If they stay put they may have to go Curry.

So what is your take on how these 1st round RB's will affect incumbents? Hightower can only hope the team looks for another need and brings in a RB later in the draft but this does make sense. Addai strikes me as a falling player so that also makes sense. The big one is Westbrook I think and what Philly bringing in a WR might do to his value both redraft and dynasty.

As usual, great stuff Sig. I'd like to visit Seattle's pick at 4. Even after signing TJ, they still have a glaring need at WR. At first I thought Crabtrre is the obvious choice for them with that pick. However after losing Rocky Bernard, they also could use a solid DT. How about this scenario? BJ Raji with the 4th pick and then come back in the 2nd and get Kenny Britt. He'd be great in the WC offense, and they would fill 2 needs with 2 outstanding players.

Solid work there, Bloom.

In regards to TEs you (obviously) have Pettigrew ranked higher then Jared Cook.

I'd be interested in your view of the upside and pass catching ability of Cook vs the well-rounded game of Pettigrew.

I've been solid with Pettigrew being the first TE off the board but recently I've been thinking that the sheer athleticism of Cook may vault him ahead of Pettigrew as teams feel that blocking can be taught but speed can not.

Raji was my second choice for Seattle after Monroe. If I had gone Curry-JSmith-Monroe, Raji would have been the pick. I know Mora wants to build the D, so Raji makes a lot of sense. They should have a few nice WRs and RBs when their second comes up.

Cook is a sick athlete, no doubt, and if South Carolina hadn't gone through so many poor QBs, we would have heard a lot more about him. One problem with him ending up the top TE is that there are many comparable players as targets in a passing game in this TE class - Shawn Nelson, Chase Coffman, James Casey, Travis Beckum... but if you want a great two-way TE, there's only Pettigrew.

15. Houston - Aaron Maybin, OLB/DE, Penn State - With the signing of Antonio Smith, the Texans can afford to spend their first round on a defensive end who might only be on the field on passing downs. Smith can shift inside on third down, a place he is comfortable from being a 3-4 DE, and Maybin can play nine technique and destroy teams that focus their blocking schemes on Mario Williams. Like Vontae Davis, Maybin’s potential draft slot covers a wide range. He has the best first step in the draft, but he also might have one of the most narrow roles in the pros. If he draws double teams away from Williams, he’ll be worth this pick.
This is a tough pick for the Texans, because if the draft falls like I have seen and they can't trade out, the chances of a good mix of value and need with pick looks slim. Especially with 3 1st round DLmen and freshly signed DE, the monetary investment almost precludes another high pick there even if the need a pure pass rusher. I mean look at Maybin he could go almost anywhere in the first round. Because he might be a one trick pony and is relatively inexperienced/young, he is a classic boom or bust player and is a little forced here. Houston are almost a lock to reach a bit for a need or make a strange BPA pick if a trade down is not possible.

Good work, brother. Even the picks I don't necessarily agree with, I can at least appreciate your logic.

As for the Steelers, they've certainly kept the band together....but they still need a better bass player. And right now, their drummer kinda sucks. While Mack would certainly be worth that selection, this crop of Cs doesn't seem to have a very steep drop from Mack to, say, Eric Wood or Caldwell. You and I have talked about this already, and I'm not sure I wouldn't be happier with them just taking Jamon Meredith over Mack.(anything to get competition for Colon, at this point.) Or....the closer we get to the draft and the more tape I get to see on him.....Jarron Gilbert for the DL.

Mack would certainly be a bankable player with the 32nd pick. He'd most likely address a near-term need in year one(RG) and bring the potential of a long-term answer at one of two spots(likely C after Hartwig's contract is up). On the flip side, the way Gilbert looked in '08, he could wind up being "Richard Seymour Lite." That said.....if we're playing the Devil's Advocate, which scenario do you think would be a better idea for Pittsburgh, as of today: Mack and, say, a CB with picks 1 and 2, or Gilbert and an OL(assuming that OL is going to be a C or G by the time their 2nd pick rolls around)?

Looking forward to the rest of this. You're gonna be busy. :diamond:

As always, feedback is more than welcome, this is one of the best groups of homers in the football world and I highly value y'alls thoughts.

good stuff!!Jets getting Maclin would be an absolute STEAL for them!

wouldn't surprise me to see NYG trade that #1 pick ( and more) to Cleveland for Braylon, if he's available.

 If the Eagles we're able to nab Moreno i'd be happy with that. I didn't think Britton's stock would rise that much but if Detroit passes on him (which I doubt they will, they need offensive line help bad) then Moreno i'd be OK with and then grab Beatty with 27.

I really enjoyed this mock Bloom, not only the picks, but just the right amount of commentary to boot.

As to the Eagles, I certainly would be happy as a fan to see Moreno and Beatty. That said, I really don't see it happening that way. Of course, part of my view is based on my hope/belief that Anquan Boldin is coming to town [and will cost one of those 1s].

I liked your DHB ahead of Crabtree if only because it would be a classically dumb move by Oakland and par for Al Davis' course. :porked:

I know we talked about this in Tennessee, but I don't think Andre Smith is going in the top 10. I think he'll go shortly thereafter, as teams that aren't in desperate need of a starting tackle right now will be willing to trade up and take a chance on greatness, but I see him as having really hurt himself in the last month.

Bloom, this version of your Mock Draft reads like a Phish set list; a series of great calls followed by a "where did that come from". You must really think that Al has lost it with DHB at 7 ahead of Crabtree. Personally it seems like a waste of talent no matter who ends up in that once proud franchise. It's too bad Davis can't be in the box next to Madoff where they can both plead guilty simultaneously to extortion and mass deception. Of course Al doesn't deserve to spend the rest of his days behind bars (well maybe at a different zoo than the one he has created in Oakland) but maybe they could move him out to Alcatraz where he can howl from one of the abandoned watch towers.

I agree with your CB pick for the Pats. One would have to think that CB and LB value is best at that slot. I wouldn't rule out a good 3-4 DE in that slot if there is value on their board. I am not sold on their depth behind a fading Seymour.

That Maze from 3-8-09 is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Raiders going for DHB sounds aobut right.

Good stuff as usual. When is the first rookie 100 coming out? I am looking forward to it.

It's true, Tress has pushed Beanie throughout his tenure at Ohio St and Charmin Soft didn't try to meet any of his challenges.

Good work, brother. Even the picks I don't necessarily agree with, I can at least appreciate your logic. As for the Steelers, they've certainly kept the band together....but they still need a better bass player. And right now, their drummer kinda sucks. :goodposting: While Mack would certainly be worth that selection, this crop of Cs doesn't seem to have a very steep drop from Mack to, say, Eric Wood or Caldwell. You and I have talked about this already, and I'm not sure I wouldn't be happier with them just taking Jamon Meredith over Mack.(anything to get competition for Colon, at this point.) Or....the closer we get to the draft and the more tape I get to see on him.....Jarron Gilbert for the DL.Mack would certainly be a bankable player with the 32nd pick. He'd most likely address a near-term need in year one(RG) and bring the potential of a long-term answer at one of two spots(likely C after Hartwig's contract is up). On the flip side, the way Gilbert looked in '08, he could wind up being "Richard Seymour Lite." That said.....if we're playing the Devil's Advocate, which scenario do you think would be a better idea for Pittsburgh, as of today: Mack and, say, a CB with picks 1 and 2, or Gilbert and an OL(assuming that OL is going to be a C or G by the time their 2nd pick rolls around)?Looking forward to the rest of this. You're gonna be busy. :)
Gilbert was my second choice. I didnt want to slot Meredith there since I did in mock 1.0. I also like Wood and Caldwell (and Shipley) and think they could wait and still get a nice center. I do dig the idea of CB depth now that McFadden has moved on (wonder what happened there? they didn't try to keep him and I thought he played well. Gay might be good, but you ALWAYS need CB depth). I would applaud a Gilbert pick, and the Steelers boards are hot with talk about him, so I think the fanbase would too.

I really enjoyed this mock Bloom, not only the picks, but just the right amount of commentary to boot. ;)As to the Eagles, I certainly would be happy as a fan to see Moreno and Beatty. That said, I really don't see it happening that way. Of course, part of my view is based on my hope/belief that Anquan Boldin is coming to town [and will cost one of those 1s].I liked your DHB ahead of Crabtree if only because it would be a classically dumb move by Oakland and par for Al Davis' course. ;)I know we talked about this in Tennessee, but I don't think Andre Smith is going in the top 10. I think he'll go shortly thereafter, as teams that aren't in desperate need of a starting tackle right now will be willing to trade up and take a chance on greatness, but I see him as having really hurt himself in the last month.
Mid first seems like the home for a place like Smith, I just put him higher in this mock because I think he's still worth a shot in that 6-10 range - although that was before public sentiment took an even further swing against him.Im glad you (and some others) have "gotten" where I was going with DHB over Crabtree - seriously folks, the Raiders do elevate to 40 time to ridiculous importance in the scouting process.

I know that the Steelers OL really, really needs help....but I'm warming noticably to the idea of burning that pick at #32 on Gilbert. The Steelers don't get a ton of opportunities to draft "impact" 3-4 Dlineman. He just might be one. Given that Colbert has shown a propensity to move up in the draft in the past, and the fact that they will likely have an extra third to play with, I wonder if they'd consider taking Gilbert there then try and broker a deal to move back up in the 2nd round to address the OL? I think they'll have the bullets to probably make a move up 10-15 spots in the second. I wonder at the OLiners that will be available at around pick 50-55, but I'm inclined to believe there will at least still be interior guys who could come in and be able to potentially help in year one.I think CB is going to have to be addressed at some point, but when is going to depend on what happens with any FAs the Steelers do/do not bring in. I like that they've slated Chris Carr for a visit. He kills two birds with one stone if he's signed: Good enough to be the nickle CB, young enough to still maybe have some upside, could start and probably not totally kill you in a pinch and, best of all, he's a plus returner. I've had my eye on Joe Burnett for the Steelers as the same type of guy coming from the draft, but signing Carr would drop the need for a CB being taken before, say, round 4-5 significantly. They could take a swipe at a FS or a FS/CB hybrid instead, since Clark's in the last year of his deal and Tony Smith got released. I can't feature they'll be giving a 31 year old Clark a long-term deal next offseason.

Nice work. Glad to see someone else agree with me about the Raiders possibly taking Maclin or DHB over Crabtree.

That being said, I've been leaning towards Seattle or Cinci going Raji (whichever one doesn't get Monroe), and just can't see Nicks and Wells falling out of the first. And Washington needs an OL more than a DE..though teams are going to stay away from Andre Smith at the top of the draft, I can see him going at 13.

Could definitely happen. I don't see Cincy touching Andre Smith, but it's the Bengals, so who knows...

just what the bengals need, another unmotivated head-case. no way marvin risks the 6th pick on andre. if he slips to the 2nd round maybe. even then i hope they pass. if mike brown makes the decision to draft smith when marvin doesn't want to, i hope marvin just walks out of the war room with the one finger salute.

i'm hoping with the 6th pick the bengals land J. Smith, Monore, Curry, or Oher.

unless the bengals trade Chad at the draft i hope they don't take Crabtree with their first pick.

With the FA frenzy the Broncos have had in the secondary (Dawkins, Goodman, Hill) I'd be very suprised to see them take Davis at 12. Obviously this is a bit of a surprise addition by your own admission, as you had Vontae out of the first in your previous mock. Any of the next four guys off the board makes more sense for Denver (Johnson, Cushing, Maybin, Maualuga).

Good read, Bloom. :goodposting:

Pettigrew again!

<shakes fist>

Falcons will pass on him and steal Purvis in the 4th or 5th round coming off of a down year.
