Blue Bottle Coffee (1 Viewer)

I live a few blocks away from their original location, a kiosk set up in a garage off an alley in Hayes Valley. There are benches now but when they first opened, you'd take your cup and go sit on the curb.

I've never had anything but a fine coffee from there but like a lot of places that deal in mystique, it's hard for the reality to measure up to the hype. Maybe it's the greatest cup of coffee ever but even if it is, it's not appreciably better than a bunch of other places. Maybe it's just that I'm a one cup a day addict and a cheap ******* but I'd rather have them brew it a little stronger.

I've never had them prepare it for me, but I've gone through 4 bags of their fresh ground for french press over the past few weeks and I think it's outstanding. My current bag is Bella Donovan. Pretty sure it's a light roast, which can be most flavorful but it has to be brewed right. I'm a fan. The bags were a gift. I may get more when I'm out.

I hope this manages to somehow kill off starbucks and their groupies

I don't know that we need a national chain of third wave artisanal coffeehouses. We don't have Blue Bottle in DC (as far as I know) but he have plenty of independent coffee shops that roast their own beans (or use a very dependable roaster) and brew to high standards.

I agree with this, but Blue Bottle has a lot of funding from some very powerful investors, so I expect to see them aggressively expand over the next few years.

We don't have any of the chains, but there are independent shops around here that serve Blue Bottle. I've had it at Grape & Bean in Alexandria. Not sure if there any in DC proper.

Buying beans for home, I usually go with the independent/local roasters though.

I have a weekly subscription with Chris Vigilante, who used to only sell Hawaiian beans at farmer's markets a few years ago. He's now roasting (a fuller complement of products) out of H. St. and will be opening his shop when Maketto opens in that area this summer.

As a backup, I buy from Ceremony out of Annapolis, who are carried at Filter.

Even if they succeed beyond everyone's wildest imaginations, Blue Bottle will still only be a niche player. They won't be able to churn out enough volume without diluting their brand.

Anyone ever have this? Supposedly the next big coffee chain but still in its infancy - Investors include Google, Instagrams founder, Flickrs founder, & Twitters founder http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-05-01/blue-bottle-coffee-and-the-next-wave-of-artisanal-coffee-shops

They just opened one around the corner from my house and the wait for a freaking coffee was 20 minutes, I passed. Just curious if anyone has any review on this place?
There's one over at Gotham West (11th Ave) but I'm not trekking the wrong way on my commute. Maybe I'll check it over the weekend.

I was just on Smith Street last Friday night but missed this. Walked right by without realizing it was there. Weird location being on Dean St - not exactly high volume traffic. You would think they would know to put it on Court or Smith.

http://www.bluebottlecoffee.com/cafes

I see they have two locations in are west Chelsea/Highline that are 1-1/2 blocks apart. Guess they're testing the Starbucks saturation model?

I agree with this. I don't think you'll ever see them in the middle of the sticks, but we will see a lot of expansion in major cities in coming years. They already are in NY and NoCal, I'd expect an expansion into SoCal, maybe Chicago, & another major metro or two very shortly.

I'm going to have an iced coffee tomorrow morning. I'm not a coffee snob, but I am curious to the buzz around this brand.

They are right on the corner of Dean and Smith (you have to actually turn on Dean, but the first storefront right there... diagonal from the French place BarTabac who BTW have an awesome cheese plate and spicy bloody mary). Prob would've been smarter to grab a Court or Smith location like you said, but I promise you they are consistently crowded every time I have walked by.

Behind the Chop Shop? Jeez I seriously can't believe I missed it.

ETA: Then again, One Girl Cookie was a huge success with a similar location (actually same side of street as Bar Tabac, behind them). When you buy a corner TH w/ a 3-car garage off a cookie business...

I haven't had those, but I'll have to check those out. My go-to is usually M.E. Swing's. I'm not sure how it rates by comparison (I think they recently made upgrades to improve the quality), but having the roastery a five minute drive my house makes it too convenient.

They're already in SoCal. That's where these 4 bags I have of their grinds came from. I'd never heard of them until I got the gift. I can be pretty snobby about coffee. If I lived where some of you do and not in this god forsaken desert, I would stick with an independent roaster. Unfortunately there is no one out here fresh roasting. So I do it in my kitchen.

Behind Bejeweled? That's even more of a weird place to stick it. But no doubt cheaper psf than Smith St.

Yes, right next to Bejeweled on the Dean Street side...

Meanwhile right there the new building across from One Girl Cookie has a condo for sale... We went to an open house yesterday and there were 10 other couples there at the same time. The sign in sheet had about 40 people on the list too. This condo will turn into a bidding war. Neighborhood is on fire right now.

I know. Left six years ago for midtown, couldn't afford to go back right now. 1-bedrooms north of $1M (88 Wyckoff, which is OK but hardly stellar). When I first lived there any TH above $1.5M would be price chopped a half dozen times before it sold. Now they slap $3.75 on the same brownstone and the bidding war sends it over $4M.

^ This is frighteningly true. It is starting to feel like a bubble to me. We aren't really looking, but we go to some open houses close by from time to time and they are always packed, and always in contract within 2 weeks of hitting the market. I assume this 47 Dean Street listing will go for at least 5-10% over ask on an all cash offer.

Makes sense that they put the new trendy coffee place in the neighborhood.

Personally I wish I could afford this; http://www.pierhouseny.com/

The new condos they are building on Brooklyn Bridge Park - I inquired solely out of curiosity knowing they would be ridiculously expensive - Can't get a 2BR for under $2.2MM.

15 years ago David Walentas offered me an insider's deal at 1 Main in Dumbo. I declined - no services or restaurants, too loud. I'm an idiot.

Ooffff :kicksrock:

Possibly my favorite building.

Honestly, if I won the Powerball (I'm talking like $250MM & up, take home of $125MM), I'd prob by the clock/PH apartment.

I only drink La Columbe. they have a location on 924 N St. NW. I order their beans from their website and they are shipped quickly. The coffee is fantastic - the beans are lightly roasted so you can actually taste the flavor of the coffee instead of that over burnt crap from Starbucks. Plus he buys directly from the farmer, which helps to directly enrich a community. Big fan.

Taking waiting on a line of 30 people all twiddling with their Apple products to give a pierced and tatted androgynous barista $6 for free trade coffee made with beans organically grown in the amazon rainforest to be consumed and crapped out by a marsupial then picked through by native peoples being given a livable wage to a whole 'nother level

a cup of Kopi Luwak Civet would be more than $6 bucks

Is this the kind of coffee that guys in $89 hoodies drink?

I think coffee has surpassed wine in terms of pretentiousness surrounding the beverage.

I go over to their Alameda location about every other week and drink a Nola, love the stuff and it gets me freaken wired. All I know is that it is some kind of iced coffee drink.

Hot take, 17 seconds.

It's an iced chickory latte, according to their website.
A beverage for the new depression. I'm waiting for a trendy kiosk where I can order a cup of ersatz acorn and chicory brew heated over an oil drum and served in a tin can.

Gave it a shot this morning.

Had the "New Orleans" iced coffee. I thought it was tasty for a morning cup, but not significantly better than what I normally get at Starbucks or other local coffee shops. They also have a one size model for iced coffee which is 12oz, which really equals 6-8oz of actual coffee. I personally like a large, which is usually a 20-24oz cup.

Price wise for this small cup of iced coffee, it was $4.36, nearly double the price of a small Starbucks & about 30% more than a Starbucks large. I'll prob grab a cup here and there, but the cup I had this morning didn't win me over.

Come to Scooby's Hobo Cafe and we'll give it to you as a combo with a cold can of beans.

Hadn't seen your follow up, but I had the exact same experience this morning. Stopped into the Gotham West location on the way to daughter's ballet class. Had the New Orleans, 3x bodega iced coffee, 2x any other chain. It was good, wasn't two or three times better. Inconvenient, overpriced, good not great, probably avoid returning.

still has a long way to catch up with beer

Was back home in Canton, OH a few weeks ago and surprised to find that they have one of the top coffee shops in the entire country there. Weird.

And the prices weren't bad either. Turns out that you don't have to be pretentious, expensive or hyped to have great coffee.

Three Africans. We all have different tastes but this is seriously delicious coffee. I have a half dozen go tos when not up to roasting my own and this is at the top of the list for now. The bag I have was roasted May 21st. Damgood.

Part of their shtick is a "purist" angle. It's a "we know better than you what is best" thing.

For size, 12 oz is the way you're "supposed" to drink coffee. If they could get away with no cream or sugar they would. A purist think that harms at worst and dilutes at best real coffee.

I don't necessarily disagree. 12 oz black coffee is the best way to drink it I think. I just don't know how well forcing that on customers will go. They are definitely a rising star in the business though. Just purchased https://tonx.org/ for subscription and for their marketing.
