Board Games (1 Viewer)

Found what has to be one of the best "break the ice" type of games...for when you're about to introduce the fun of board games to people who don't play.

Ruk-shuk is a TON of fun. Simple rock balancing game but it's quick and simple and draws them in...with some simple strategy mixed in as well.
Tsuro is a great one for this. Lots of fun, great for kids, and takes maybe 15 minutes.

That said I've been playing Mr. Jack with my kids. Forgotten just how good that game is. Spectacular brain burner, but simple enough that the younger set can figure it out to be able to play.
You're right about Tsuro. Played with friends and their young daughter...very interesting, simple game with strategy mixed in...

I'll have to check out Mr. Jack.

Any of you guys playing these games with out kids? I would be looking for something to play with a wife and another couple etc. Got Cards Against Humanity as a gift and the wife thought some games would be better than sitting in front of the TV.
We have a pretty extensive game collection and no kids. It's a great hobby and keeps the mind young. We play much heavier games than most here.

boardgamegeek.com is your best resource.

Most dexterity games are good starters. Riff Raff, Hamsterolle, Saturn, etc.

I did pick up Pandemic. We've played 5-6 games, each 4 players, and have won about half of them. It's perfect for our setup, with one 7-year-old who's tired of losing at Catan, Carcassonne, and Munchkin to the 10- and 13-year old.

I got my wife to play a couple of times while my daughter was out of town for Christmas... so far, everyone really loves the game. We play with cards showing and everyone collaborates on every turn. We'll see how that plays out long-term. I already feel like I've gotten my money's worth out of this, and I hope we continue to play it for a long time.

Between two adults it can be a serious brain burner. So it can be pretty light or very heavy, depending on the opponent.

I'm making my own Crokinole board...I think I'll have it completed this week. Just took some pieces of an old table leaf and joined them...routed the crap out of it and sanded the living crap out of it. Polishing is next and it'll be done.

We picked this up for Christmas and we love it. Fantastic family board game.

That sounds fantastic. And I'm definitely going to check out Ruk-shuk. My 12-year-old loves Blokus and Jenga. Ruk-shuk sounds right up her alley.

Anomia and Duple were big hits over the holidays at a gathering with 10- to 15-year-old kids and their parents. Easy to explain the premise. Moves faster than Apples To Apples, not as mean-spirited as Cards Against Humanity.

Not saying Anomia or Duple are superior to either of those other games. I'm actually looking forward to my nieces and nephews being old enough for me to be comfortable slinging a round of CAH because they would be awesome at it. Just saying Anomia and Duple were quick to set up, had next-to-no learning curve, and were safe to play with grandparents within earshot.

Greatly enjoying all the recommendations in this thread.

I come from an extremely small town in a dry county... there are lots of folks looking for some clean fun. One of my buddy's family has a game night every so often, and always when he comes back to town. I don't see him very often and he's a dear friend so I try to plan my visits at the same time. Anyway, I'm close as they come to being an adopted member of the family and I love the huge game nights - not unlikely to have 15-20 people show up on any given occasion. Party games always start off the evening while there are several people there, and then later we split into smaller groups and break out (slightly) heavier fare.

Mafia has been their favorite "all play" game for a long time... until I taught them Two Rooms and a Boom back in the summer. It's a two-team game that is based on secrets and bluffing and acting and intrigue. Good for young or old.

Two Rooms and a Boom! - Print and Play pdf (rules and roles)

Just finished my Crokinole board...it came out awesome.

Polished it up with Mother's Wax and it slides wonderfully.

Played a few games with my daughter tonight...can't wait to get a 4 player game going.

Bought Ticket To Ride (USA) a few days ago based on all the chatter in this thread; it's a lot of fun. Might grab the 1910 expansion to get the bigger cards and variations to the game play.

Played Roll For It and Machi Koro yesterday while watching football. First time playing those, very nice light games. Machi Koro gameplay is like Settlers of Catan without the trading.

We played "What's Yours Like" on NYE with a group of about 20 adults. Kids were running around, a few of the older ones (most families present have 4th grade kids) would stick around to listen. I like the innuendos (my mind is always in the gutter, plus a good looking group of moms). One of the turns went like this:

  • First clue: "Mine are tight."
  • Second: "I like mine wet."
  • Third: "Mine are soft."
  • Fourth: "Mine are dry."
  • The word was... (any guesses?)

Expansion pack is totally worth it for the additional routes.

I played European for the first time over Christmas and really liked the handful of differences.

Been playing a lot of Citadels lately. Plays well from 2 to 7 players. I prefer 2-4 though as a 7 player game takes quite a bit longer (just over an hour) than the half hour or less a 2-3 player game takes.

King of Tokyo has come out a bit when we have 4-6 people. Lighthearted fun.

Tried Resistance recently and it didn't go over very well. Never felt like you accomplished anything when you won. We played with 5. I'd like to give it another shot with more players and see how that goes.

Sabotuer is a good game for a larger group (up to 10). Hidden roles pit good guys against the bad.

Lastly, Love Letter is a fantastic 3-4 player game. A round takes 5 minutes or so, first to win 4 rounds wins the game.

We have the Alvin and Dexter expansion also. Kids like that sometimes.

3 pages in and no mention of Puerto Rico? I love that game. I've got the "expansion" set but have not played with jt yet just because I'm saving it for when the stock game begins to get stale for me.

Currently playing 7 Wonders, Bang!, Boss Monster (very cool lesser known game), Forbidden Island. Bought Gearworld: The Borderlands for some time in the future for some Lords of Conquest nostalgia.

Game is awesome and a good warm up for Agricola. San Juan is the card game version of Puerto Rico and also very good with a bit simpler ruleset if someone is struggling with PR.I have all of the TTR games and expansions except Africa and Marklin. All are fantastic. The Alvin and Dexter expansion adds a nice twist and can be played with any version of the game

Android: Netrunner is a great 2p card game.

Bang!, Talisman, Tikal, Le Havre, and Zombicide are some more that we play regularly that I didn't see mentioned yet

If anyone in SoCal ever wants to get together for some gaming I'm interested

You're in SD? North or where?

Guys...just stop buying games...until you have "Dead of Winter".

http://www.plaidhatgames.com/games/dead-of-winter

This game is incredible.

it's a zombie game...but the best I've ever played.

There are countless characters with endless abilities for you to take advantage of during play.

There's so many weapons and equipment that comes into play.

Zombies everywhere with great mechanics.

The missions are random and are very well thought out.

There is a constant crisis or mini-goal each round that can trigger some awful stuff on you.

You can play cooperative...where you're all working together.

You can play where each plays for himself while all still trying to complete a final goal.

And best of all...you can have a saboteur randomly in your game...so you never know who it is or even if there is one each game.

Lastly...the thing that really adds something extra is a huge stack of crossroad cards that come out each turn. Basically the person to your left reads the card to themselves and if something happens on your turn to trigger it...it'll add a whole new wrinkle to the game or your turn.

Lombardi hit me with a link to Barnes & Noble that got me the game for $45 total...free shipping.

It retails for $60 and is worth every penny.

There's other modes to play as well...it'll work with two players (haven't tried it yet) but it's best with 3 or more...amazing game.

I have heard many good things about this game, but have not had the pleasure yet. It's on my wish list. I think I might like BSG better as a traitor mechanic but 3 hour play time kills BSG for my group.

You might have trouble finding Dead of Winter since it was just shown on TableTop.

Can someone hook me up with the discount code on the zombie game? I want it, but it's currently showing as $100 on Amazon.

Wow, C&C must be right - it's $150 on Barnes and Noble now and ineligible for discount codes.

ETA: The manufacturer says it's on back order.

It's been terribly hard to get ahold of already...it's been on backorder for months...Lombardi and i just got lucky.

I am embarrassed at how much of my life I wasted playing Risk in my younger years.
Greatest custom Risk rule ever: nukes.

If someone rolls 3 sixes they draw a card and that country is nuked. All armies killed and you put a marker on the territory. Anyone who goes through the country loses half of their armies to radiation.

Cards Against Humanity is also great.
Just a heads up:

Cards against Humanity is offering it's holiday cheer again:

https://www.eightsensiblegifts.com/

Here’s how it works: You give us $15 now, and we’ll send you eight mystery gifts for the eight nights of Hanukkah. Subscriptions are limited to the first 150,000 people who sign up, so give us your money quickly or you’ll probably regret it for the rest of your life. This is the last time we’re doing a big holiday hoopla like this (we’re very tired), so get it while you still can.

Decided to go all in with the Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game. So far, my son have just oogled over the little ships and watched some videos on gameplay on Youtube. Looks pretty great. Excited to get going in some groups on this.

Settlers of Catan is my first choice amongst adults.  Right now we are playing the board/card version of "where in the world is Carmen San Diego".  Basically it's a more advanced version of clue
