Board Member Issues did this cross the line? (1 Viewer)

I'd thought I get the FFA collective wisdom on this.

Our league president for the most part does a good job but definitely skews things in his favor - nothing that detrimental "yet"

Recently it has been brought to my attention that he sent an email to the local governing body threatening to pull our fields for their use unless the team his daughter is on was not reclassified.

While I do not have any proof that this email actually exists, I have it from a pretty reliable source that this email did go out. Only myself and another member even know this has happened.

By sending this email, without notifying the board, I feel he potentially risked any future dealings with this organization and potentially risking us hosting future tournaments. I hate dealing with this BS

a) Did he cross a line?

b) Without actual proof, how would you proceed?

c) Should I wait until the next board meeting to bring this up, should i contact other board members individually?

d) If I do broach this subject I guarantee it's going to be a #### storm....

How would you proceed if i do confirm the email.

Thoughts....

b) Without actual proof, how would you proceed? Ask him about it.

c) Should I wait until the next board meeting to bring this up, should i contact other board members individually? I would hold off without more info.

Talk to dude first.

If confirmed, bring it to the board.

If denied, bring up the topic of tournament hosting or classification and see where it goes - but don't call the dude out - let him call himself out.

Of course, maybe his daughter's team should be reclassified and he would have made the "threat" even if she wasn't on it. I like to assume positive intent until everything is out on the table.

The local governing body classifies which team his daughter is on, but he controls the fields? Soccer or lacrosse?
Our softball complex host various USSSA events.  Our travel teams are classified at a certain level "C"  when playing in anyof these torunaments.  Since they were new this year they are required to start at B for one tournament.  He felt they should skip that

Ah, softball. That makes perfect sense. Definitely, can't allow him to threaten to unilaterally to pull fields for any reason, let alone a quid pro quo for his daughter's team's benefit.

His daughters team should be reclassified and they were after this email but the normal process is to play 1 tournament at the higher level before dropping down.  While in the end it "worked"  I don't think it is justified especially without running it by all of us first

Meh, the guy seems to be acting like a baby, but if he knows the team is going to waste time and money getting their butts kicked for 3-4 games, I can see his point.

Of course, it seems to be clearly spelled out in the rules, so he should just suck it up.

If you want to know for personal reasons, go ahead and ask him how they were reclassified without going to the B tournament and see what he says. What he did seems petty, but having a board discussion seems even worse.

On something like this that obviously has the air of conflict of interest the way to approach it is to keep everything open and transparent. If it was the right thing to do and even if something he normally does or is allowed to do etc, the fact his daughter is on the team means that he needs to take the extra step to inform and consult with the rest of the board. Otherwise, there is no reason to have a board. My concern would be more so nipping stuff like this now so you avoid bigger problems in the future and establish the right precedent moving forward.

I understand where you are coming from.  As a board our best intentions are for what is beneficial for the entire league. It is petty and as president he should be held to a higher standard imo.  In our view what he did risked future profits for our organization if the governing body decides they don't want to deal with us anymore.

And while we do have pretty good proof we have nothing concrete as of yet

When is he up for re-election?
That's another matter all together, not sure how he was appointed as that was before my time and there is no talk of anything like that.

I know the prior president stepped down but is still on the board, this is year 2 or 3 I think

Huh. Most boards have a time-frame...if for no other reason, so the current folks dont feel obligated top stay on longer than they want.

I thought it was going to be a slap fight among members of this board. The fact pattern is much less interesting.

PASS

What's his username?  Gaming the system so his daughter's team has an edge is collusion at best and probably much, much worse.  In my big money league he'd be out as commish (and probably out of the league, too)

While this seems ridiculous Id probably blow it off. As a softball parent/coach this is nothing compared to other things you will encounter as your kid moves up through the ranks. Believe me

Honestly it would probably do that team some good to face better teams for a weekend, unless they are truly awful

It is already over. Bygones. Just keep the evidence handy to pull out if and when he does something else.
