Bob Dole, longtime Republican leader dies (1 Viewer)

Man I miss the days when Bob Dole was a leader of the Republican party.  He's considered a RINO now because he doesn't bow down to Trump.

What a sad state that party is.  Complete deference to one man or you're out.

RIP Bob

From a NYT obituary, about the 1996 campaign:

At a bowling alley in Des Moines, his friend Senator John McCain, a former naval aviator and Mr. Dole’s wingman in those last days on the road, delivered a spontaneous tribute to him.

“This is the last crusade of a great warrior,” Mr. McCain told a small crowd over the clatter of falling bowling pins, “a member of a generation of Americans who went out and made the world safe for democracy so that we could have lives that were far better for ourselves and for our children.”

Mr. Dole, standing nearby, wept.

RIP Bob Dole

He liked and supported  trump.

He liked and supported  trump.
That's fair as he voted for him twice but here are some of his comments.

-"He had Rudy Giuliani running all over the country, claiming fraud. He never had one bit of fraud in all those lawsuits he filed and statements he made."

-"I'm a Trumper," Dole said at one point during the conversation. But he added at another, "I'm sort of Trumped out, though."

In a split with the 45th president, Dole said there's no question that Trump lost his reelection race in 2020 – narrowly perhaps but fair and square.

-On the current political environment, he says, "I do believe we've lost something."

Seems like legitimate level-headed criticism.

Not only completely wrong and but inappropriate.

Is this the way it’s going to be? We’re going to look at every Republican from now on in terms of: did he support Trump? Did he criticize Trump?
I don’t want it.

Same is true of HW as well. I didn't agree with him but I think he was honorable on his service. And of course also a war hero as I recall. Those guys and that generation make the current crop mostly seem like clowns.
Agreed. Politics aside reading HW's wiki page is wild.

A seemingly wonderful man and somebody who was indeed brave and served our country in its never-ending quest to bring godly ideals to earth, as imperfect as we may be.

RIP to a hero.
