I need some help. I skipped playing fantasy beisbol last year, so I am not up on all players. I've got the 5th pick in a 10-team 6x6 roto league (standard 5x5 categories plus OPS and Holds). I feel like Kemp, Cabrera and Pujols will be gone. I am hoping to get Tulowitski at 1.5 due to position scarcity. Am I crazy to pass on Braun if he's there?

What if Tulo is picked at 1.4, should I go with Braun or Votto?

Any other player I should consider at 1.5?

You should take the player you fell will have the best stats for the year regardless of position......IF you think Braun will repeat last year or even be close then he should be gone before you draft so consider it a present

Kemp, Miggy, Pujols, Bautista, Tulo, Braun, that's my top 6. In a 10-teamer I'm not sure I'm taking Tulo or Braun, if you're only starting 3 OFs then I probably take Tulo.

I ended up with:

C: B Posey

1B: Berkman

2B: R Roberts

3B: M Reynolds

SS: T Tulowitski

OF: B Gardner, I Suzuki, C Lee

Util: A Lind

Bench: Chris Young, M Scutaro, J Werth, J Lucroy, Alexei Ramirez

SP: R Halladay, F Hernandez, J Weaver

RP: M Rivera, J Valverde

P: C Hamels, U Jimenez, J Peralta, B Bray, E Mujica

Obviously, I went pitcher heavy. In years past, I've usually gone batter heavy and haven't won. So I decided to switch it up. Also, I couldn't draft live, so I had to pre-rank my players.

I've been offered M Texeira for J Weaver. I should probably take it.

I've put feelers out for a top Holds guy for Ubaldo.

Please critique.

ten team leagues are tough because everyone has pretty solid rosters. To be honest, I'd be starting Werth over Carlos Lee.Being that you already have Hamels on your bench, I'd probably do the Tex for Weaver deal. He is way better than Lind and Berkman.I do like your team, but I'd try to improve your OF. Ichiro and Gardner are not going to help your OPS (645 and 713 last year :X ) better hope Werth is better than 718 this year.g'luck

Actually, Hamels isn't on the bench, but I could definitely move him from P to SP, then pick up any pitcher from waiver wire.

Gardner was wasted, almost no matter where you picked him. This ain't McGwire/Sosa ball any more. .250 hitters with 30+ SB speed are growing on trees. Yeah, BG has the chance to add a lofty 15 or so SB's more to your team's total. That makes him about three rounds more valuable than Alejandro de Aza, not 15 rounds...and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if AdA outscored him straight up.

I know you guys probably don't care, but I'm going to try to update this thread with my moves (add/drops and trades, not lineup) throughout the season.

The Teixera deal was taken off the table.

I've put out the following trades:

I give up Lind and Hamels for Pedroia and Bastardo. The other owner said he was willing to part with Pedroia because he had Ackley on the bench.

I give up Posey and Weaver for Adrian Gonzalez and Greg Holland. Probably shooting a little high, but the other owner put his needs as C and SP.

I'm pretty confident that is going to be the worst offense in a 10 team league, but I think you are on the right track with your trade ideas. My advice would be to try to close a deal or two quickly because needs disappear just as quickly as they open up for other teams once the season starts. Maybe the best time will be in the first week of the season. Lots of owners go into the draft reading over and over again to wait on pitching, so they draft that way. Sometimes it's a different story once they take that first trip through the rotation, their guys get beat around, and they're getting 1 pt in all pitching cats.

Also, you're going to have to take some flyers on hitters if anyone shows even a hint of a breakout in April. If you're conservative with hitters, you'll automatically finish middle of the pack or worse because you'll get slaughtered in 6 categories.

Dropped Ubaldo (partially because he drilled my #1 pick Tulo)

Picked up Henry Rodriguez.

Updated roster:

C: B Posey

1B: Berkman

2B: R Roberts

3B: M Reynolds

SS: T Tulowitski

OF: B Gardner, I Suzuki, C Lee

Util: A Lind

Bench: Chris Young, M Scutaro, J Werth, Alexei Ramirez

SP: R Halladay, F Hernandez, J Weaver

RP: M Rivera, J Valverde

P: C Hamels, J Peralta, B Bray, E Mujica, M Melancon, H Rodriguez

Looking for some saves.
Rodriguez has not been named the closer. It could be Lidge. And Storen wont be out very long. So you dropped a potential ace SP for 2-3 saves AT MOST.

My league counts Holds too. I don't like his ERA & WHIP either. His velocity seems to be dropping too.Plus, did you miss the part about him drilling Tulo!?!!!???

I bet you could have traded Ubaldo for a bat upgrade.

Yeah, I tried. No takers. For some reason, I feel like I need to make a lot of moves early season. Maybe he returns to 2010 form. Maybe his WHIP balloons to 1.50+.

There are a couple of guys/league that really, really like Ubaldo. And a lot more others that want nothing to dow ith him. I'm part of the latter group. Watching him pitch is tough to watch.

Melancon not named the closer to replace Bailey at start of season. I'll hold onto him as he'll still help with Holds, and will probably get some Save opportunities here and there.

Dropped Scutaro for Aceves. I was hoping to corner the Holds/Saves situation in Boston. Unfortunately both haven't performed well.

Monday update: 2nd place. Batting: 3, 4.5, 7, 4, 7, 8. Pitching: 10, 3, 10, 7, 5, 9.

I was offered Bourne and Kuroda for Werth and Weaver.

I countered with Pence and Kuroda for Gardner and Weaver.

He's ready to accept as he needs SP (he currently has E Santana, Kuroda, M Minor, G Gonzalez, J Johnson and D Price), but is giving it serious consideration.

Edited to add:

He accepted. League now has chance to vote against.

I wouldve wanted a lot more for Weaver
I did want more, but every other person declined a trade. And there comes a point when being in first by a huge margin in pitching categories is the same as being in first by one more stat in each category. I felt like Halladay, King Felix and Hamels would provide enough of a cushion to keep me around the top of pitching. And I desperately needed help in offensive stats.

Update?
Dan Kolko ‏ @DanKolko Storen felt tenderness in elbow when throwing yesterday. Going to see Dr. Andrews

he dropped a guy who threw a no hitter thru 6 for a closer in a committee still

Trade finally went through today, effective tomorrow. Meaning I get Weaver's start today

:wall: I don't really want Weaver's stats from that outing.Dropped Lind for Austin Jackson. I am looking to move up in the Runs category (dead last as today, 3rd place overall).

Standings update (4th overall):

Batting: 1, 4, 7, 7, 9, 8

Pitching: 9.5, 5.5, 8, 3.5, 3, 6

Dropped Melancon for Nolan Reimold.

Dropped Alexei Ramirez and picked up Lucroy again (I want to make sure I get ABs for when Busta takes a day off).

Current roster:

C Posey

1B Berkman (finally back in the lineup)

2B Roberts

3B Reynolds

SS Tulowitski

OF C Young, H Pence, Werth

Util Austin Jackson

Bench C Lee, Lucroy, Ichiro, Reimold

SP Halladay, F Hernandez, Hamels

RP Rivera, Valverde

P H Rodriguez, Aceves, Bray, Mujica, Peralta

Bench H Kuroda

I've put some feelers out for 2B and/or 3B help. Willing to trade an OF.

I've been offered Teixera and Kelly Johnson for Pence and Valverde.

He's hurting for Saves, only has Marmol with 1. I am turning this one down as it hurts my Average and leaves me scrambling for Saves.

Moved C Young to DL. Picked up Tom Wilhelmsen for some Holds help.

Dropped Peralta and picked up R Andino for some 2B/3B/SS versatility. Seems like Tulo misses a game here and there, and Ryan Roberts and Mark Reynolds need a kick in the rear.

Dropped Bill Bray and picked up Matt Carpenter (with Berkman most likely moving to the DL).

With all these moves the past 2 days, here's the updated roster:

C Posey

1B Carpenter

2B Roberts

3B Reynolds

SS Tulowitski

OF Pence, Werth, Ichiro

Util A Jackson

Bench Lucroy, C Lee, Reimold, Andino, Berkman (only 1 DL spot)

DL C Young

SP Hamels, Halladah, Hernandez

RP Rivera, Valverde

P Aceves, H Rodriguez, Mujica, Wilhelmsen, Kuroda

I proposed Valverde and Ichiro for Teixera and Lawrie. He needs saves. Teixera is sitting behind Adrian Gonzalez, and Lawrie is sitting behind Freese right now.

Some more roster moves:

Moved Berkman to DL (I was wrong before, we have 2 DL spots). Picked up Jon Rauch.

Dropped Carlos Lee. Picked up Alejandro De Aza.

After acquiring Teixera, Matt Carpenter became expendable. Dropped him for Matt Harrison.

Standings update (8th overall):

Batting: 1, 1.5, 3, 6.5, 4, 5

Pitching: 8.5, 8, 7.5, 3.5, 1, 4

Updated roster:

C Posey

1B Teixera

2B Andino (Roberts to ride pine for awhile)

3B Freese

SS Tulowitski

OF Ichiro, Jackson, Werth

Util De Aza

Bench Roberts, Reynolds, Reimold, Lucroy

DL Young, Berkman

SP Halladay, Hamels, Hernandez

RP Rivera, Rodriguez

P Aceves, Mujica, Wilhelmsen, Rauch, Kuroda

Bench Harrison

My team has taken a serious dive, dropping 18 pts from last week. Hopefully these moves will pay off. Holding Reynolds for now on a short leash. If he turns it around, I'll trade him away. The power is bound to make an appearance, right? Reimold will be inserted for Ichiro when his neck spasms have stopped acting up.

Dropped Ubaldo (partially because he drilled my #1 pick Tulo)

I'm still happy with the decision.

Standings update (7th overall):

Batting: 1, 3, 2.5, 5, 4, 2

Pitching: 9.5, 8, 7, 3, 3, 5

Finally dropped Mark Reynolds. Picked up Bryan LaHair.

Current roster:

C Posey

1B Teixeira

2B Altuve

3B Freese

SS Tulowitski

OF LaHair, Jackson, Reimold

Util De Aza

Bench Lucroy, Ichiro, Werth

Bench Kuroda, Harrison

Every one of my starters (except for Tulowitski and Posey) was acquired via trade or waiver wire. I knew I'd be turning over my roster when I went with pitching aces early in the draft. All of these transactions are starting to add up ($0.25 per move). Hopefully it pays off (20% of transaction pot for each: top Y! rated batter, batter with most HRs, top Y! rated pitcher, pitcher with most Ks, and fantasy team with greatest second half improvement - this gives incentive to poor performing teams).

Dropped Matt Harrison. Picked up Jake Westbrook in time for today's start. I'm probably going to drop Westbrook.
