Published Sat May 3 3:24:00 p.m. ET 2008 (KFFL) Mac Engel, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports the Dallas Cowboys were not willing to trade LB Bobby Carpenter in an earlier deal with the Miami Dolphins. The Cowboys sent TE Anthony Fasano and LB Akin Ayodele to Miami before the 2008 NFL Draft, but the Dolphins wanted Carpenter instead, according to an NFL source.

Any bright future here ??? or just a backup movement ??? He was a 1st Round Pick and Z.Thomas is not getting any younger ...

I'm really not sure on Carpenter. On a Cowboys game broadcast LAST season the announcers were saying he was falling out of favor. Became a situational/speciall teams player at best.

I read the same blurbs you read and am a bit confused now

Hard to say. The WILB role is the more favored slot in this scheme, so it's good news for Carpenter. Kevin Burnett is still in the picture there, too, and it's not clear whether he's been moved back on the depth chart for Carpenter or not.

Wasn't B. James the WILB last year? Is he moving over?

No, Ayodele was.

Just looking in one league- James out-scored Ayodele 161 to 94 which would make me think that the SILB is actually the more productive spot.

No question that James was the more valuable player last year. Much of it had to do with Ayodele really shaky play, but it was significant that Ayodele did not play in the nickel packages at all. And James 64 solos aren't anything to get excited about. I argue against defaults all the time for IDP purposes, and this is another strong argument against them. Looking at the bigger picture, the Dallas ILB result last year was really deceiving -- but still predictable, since many argued as much before the 07 season began.

If you look at this post (which continues to be a work in progress with regard to the non 1-gap 3-4 fronts), it's seems clear that even an average talent in a three down role in a 1-gap 3-4 at RILB/WILB is the player to target. It's hard to put all those disclaimers into a simple default, however.

As you can see in my ranking of Zach Thomas this year, I'm anticipating that the WILB position gets redeemed in Dallas this season in a big way.

Kevin Burnett is another guy that the Cowboys are pretty high on. He already plays in the nickel package and could potentially fill WILB at some point.

I doubt the Cowboys forget the Dolphins interest

Once he's cast as "just a backup" his trade value is minimized.
