Bobby Engram...might be out (1 Viewer)

From Rotowire:

Bobby Engram may have a thyroid condition that could prevent him from playing Sunday.

This could be far more serious than the illness that was originally listed as Engram's reason for missing practice. If Engram is out, Nate Burleson will get more snaps. Source: The News Tribune

I read about him missing practice by being "sick," but didn;t worry about it.

Pretty big news for those of us contemplating WW moves - Engram and bennett are my WR4/5 and they may now both be replaced with BJohn and Welker - if I can even GET both of them while sitting on a #10 WW spot.

P.S. - and Burleson becomes a viable target - Engram's been averaging near 8 ppg in non-PPR leagues. More in PPRs.

But the report says "MAY have," which makes me leery of cutting him quickly. Any indication from Rotowire or elsewhere when we'll know more?

What kind of number do expect BJohn to put up against Chi ?

Not much - but I don't anticipate Fitz coming back before week 10. Until then, BJohn works GREAT for me since I also have Boldin - trotting out Boldin as my WR1, BJohn as my WR3, and either Galloway or Mason as my WR2 is something I yearn for more than having Engram my bench.

Engram probably wouldn't find my lineup outside of injury - BJohn will.

how will this affect branch ??
IMO, it won't.It affects Burleson - and maybe Hackett.
Have you seen something I have not, because I have seen nothing stating that Branch is the starter.
:confused:Branch started the last Seattle game. Holmgren was clear when he got Branch that the move meant Burleson was going to the bench and Engram's role (then the WR3/slot receiver) would not change. That was why I didn;t ditch Engram when I first heardthe Branch news.Branch is the starter opposite DJax.

With a tasty matchup against St. Louis, this isn't good news. I was hoping to plug him in as my 3rd WR. Now I'll have to put Heap in there...yuck.

Alexander out, Engram questionable for Seahawks quest to regain NFC West lead

By GREGG BELL - AP Sports Writer

2006-10-11 18:47

KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) -League MVP Shaun Alexander will not play Sunday in Seattle's NFC West showdown at St. Louis despite recent tests that show the crack in his foot has diminished.

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren declared Alexander out on Wednesday. Holmgren called him ``iffy'' on Monday after a new round of pictures of the left foot Alexander cracked Sept. 24 during a win over the New York Giants showed some healing.

Now the Seahawks will hope to have last season's NFL rushing leader return for their Oct. 22 home game against Minnesota. Maurice Morris will make his second consecutive start for Alexander against the Rams.

Starting receiver Bobby Engram is questionable for Sunday with an illness that has left him listless and resting at home, yet another challenge for Seattle's recently struggling offense.

``They are thinking it has something to do with his thyroid. So more news is forthcoming,'' Holmgren said. ``He's not going to be around. He's resting, at home. He didn't have a lot of energy.''

Neither has the team that led the NFL in scoring at more than 28 points per game last season. It is 15th now, averaging 19.5 points. The Seahawks have been held without an offensive touchdown in two of four games, blasphemous for offensive guru Holmgren.

Seattle is coming off its bye that followed a 37-6 loss at Chicago, the worst defeat since Holmgren arrived to coach Seattle in 1999. It was the Seahawks' worst output since a 14-3 defeat to Washington on Nov. 3, 2002.

Engram has 18 catches through four games. When asked what he'd miss if Engram can't play, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said: ``Just the comfort level I have with him in critical situations. He works the middle of the field better than anyone. He's clutch.''

Engram's absence from practice this week has brought back into the offense 2005 contributor D.J. Hackett, who has been inactive for the last two games.

``I like any position, when it's on the field with the chance on getting the ball,'' Hackett said when asked what role he may fill with Engram out.

It also makes Deion Branch more likely to make his first Seahawks start, opposite team reception leader Darrell Jackson. Holmgren said if Engram does not play, Jackson, Nate Burleson and Hackett will rotate in Engram's primary role as slot receiver on passing downs. Branch would stay exclusively outside.

Burleson played slot receiver with the Minnesota Vikings over parts of 2003-05. He said he didn't begin working inside with the Seahawks until last month.

``But the coaches told me to take a peek at the inside, slot position this week,'' Burleson said in anticipation that Engram won't play.

A Seattle reporter talking on the Herd this morning said that Engram's thyroid needed more testing and he probably wasn't going to play.

This reads like max targets to Branch (!). As of now, he's on my bench with TO, TJHous, and Bruce starting, but I'm having second thoughts...

wow, so branch has already catapulted to WR1 status in seattle... i think i smell a buy low candidate?

 Branch is learning one position - why make him learn two? All three of the named receivers know the Seattle offense a lot better and are better candidates to recognize when they are the hot read and break off the slot route.

i'm not saying branch will outperform the other WRs on the team, but logically speaking, it sounds like branch will be on the field more than the other 3 WRs according to holmgren...

I highly doubt that Branch will be on the field more than D-Jax. I think what it means is that since D-Jax and Burleson know the other positions, they can move into the different positions based on the WR packages in the game at the time.

Thyroid condition confirmed per FBG blogger

KIRKLAND -- Tests this week on Bobby Engram confirmed the Seahawks wide receiver has a thyroid condition. Additional tests will determine the level of his disorder, how it will be treated and how long he might be sidelined.

Engram, the team's second-leading receiver, remained at home to rest as the team continued practicing Thursday for Sunday's NFC West showdown with the Rams in St. Louis.

The club continues to list Engram as questionable on its injury report, a designation that means he has a 50 percent chance to play. But if Engram doesn't practice today, he is unlikely to play.

What does the offense lose if Engram is out?

"Probably the comfort level that I have with him in critical situations," quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said, aware that 10 of Engram's 18 receptions have produced first downs.

"Bobby works the middle (of the field) better than anybody," Hasselbeck added. "He's a leader out there on the field -- coaching guys up, talking all the time, communicating. He's a great blocker. He's clutch. A lot of plays are still in our offense because he's so good at running them.

"If he's not out there, then the next guy has to step up and fill that void."

That would be D.J. Hackett, who has not been active since the Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He did not dress for the past two games, a decision that coincided with former New England Patriots wide receiver Deion Branch being activated after he was acquired in a Sept. 11 trade.

Seahawks WR Engram likely out a couple of weeks

Written by: Mike Sando ¦ 10/13/2006

Coach Mike Holmgren has finished speaking with reporters following practice today. WR Bobby Engram will presumably not make the trip and could miss a short period of time (we could be talking about a couple of weeks, but we really do not have anything definitive). Holmgren stressed that Engram's thyroid condition is nothing serious or rare. He said it's something that can be treated, and that he expects Engram to make a speedy recovery. But right now, they want him to rest. In other news, WR Deion Branch will start at split end Sunday. DT Marcus Tubbs could start. He has worked with the starters in practice, but they rotate guys there, so don't read too much into that.
